SUMMARY:Australian Brandenburg Orchestra: Notre-Dame
DESCRIPTION:A story of ritual\, revolution\, and resurrection.\nIt only took one tiny ember to spark the destruction of 800 years of history when Notre-Dame de Paris was partially consumed by fire in April 2019\, igniting collective grief for the iconic eras\, moments\, and characters embodied in her halls. \nWhile fire has the power to destroy\, it also cleanses and purifies. The ashes create a canvas and illuminate the path forward\, to bravely begin anew. Battered\, dilapidated and restored. Witness to both revolution and miracles\, the cathedral on the Île de la Cité has been an epicentre of musical innovation and choral transcendence since the first stone was laid\, and its enduring spirit deserves to be celebrated. \nSpirited\, soulful and unapologetically French\, Notre-Dame commemorates eight centuries of exquisite music performed within Notre-Dame de Paris. It is a story told in a moving theatrical experience of spoken word penned by award-winning playwright and director Alana Valentine\, spurring from the mind of Artistic Director Paul Dyer\, and brought to life by orchestral and choral music from the cathedral’s rich history. \nNotreDame goes beyond a story of grief and loss. Revel in an opportunity to raise our hearts together as we dig through the ashes of memories\, affirming hope in the certain resurrection of the cathedral\, and indeed the human spirit\, to enter a brave new era. \n\nThursday 22\, Saturday 24 & Sunday 25 February 2024; MRC< Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 45 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $196 – $30\nA reserve $175 ($109* Concession); B reserve $127 ($79 Concession); C reserve $95 ($59 Concession)\nD reserve $60; E reserve $30

DESCRIPTION:Experience one of New York’s most celebrated contemporary string quartets creating music for change.\nWith a gripping performance style and an unquenchable appetite for musical adventure\, Brooklyn Rider make their Australian debut as part of Melbourne Recital Centre’s 15th birthday celebration. With multiple GRAMMY®-nominations and international acclaim\, this multitalented quartet is celebrated for creating music that spans the musical spectrum. \nHaving cemented themselves as unafraid musical explorers over their almost-20 years together\, the string quartet have been described as ‘four classical musicians performing with the energy of young rock stars jamming on their guitars’ (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette). \nAbout the concert\nFor their introduction to Melbourne\, Brooklyn Rider present The Four Elements\, a program anchored by works symbolising earth\, air\, water and fire as a musical metaphor for both the inner workings of a quartet and the inter-related effects of climate change on our planet. This project\, developed by the ensemble in 2022\, uses compositions from within the last century of accelerated and unprecedented planetary change and presents them alongside commissions. \nGenerously supported by the Robert Salzer Foundation. \nPost-Concert Talk\nFollowing this extraordinary performance\, Brooklyn Rider joins Melbourne Recital Centre’s Director of Programming\, Marshall McGuire\, in the ground floor foyer for a 20-minute discussion about their artistry\, careers and more. SUMMARY:Omega Ensemble – Échappsodie
DESCRIPTION:French delights and modern beauty.\nAs one of the leading exponents of musical Impressionism\, Debussy’s music represents an extraordinarily beautiful palette of colour and harmonic innovation. Commissioned by the Paris Conservatoire the Premiere Rhapsodie was originally a ‘Solo de Concours’ (competition solo) written to test the virtuosic abilities of students at the Conservatoire. \nLaden with emotional melodies and rich textures\, Gabriel Fauré’s Piano Quintet No. 1 is an expressive work that highlights a groundbreaking change in French chamber music. \nA rising star in both her native Australia and current home in Paris\, Alice Chance’s Échappsodie (a made-up word using the French verb échapper — ‘to escape’) takes fragments of Debussy’s Premiere Rhapsodie and constructs them into a colourful masterclass of virtuosity for clarinet and ensemble. \nOmega Ensemble\nDavid Rowden clarinet; Peter Clark violin; Natalia Harvey violin; Neil Thompson viola\nPaul Stender cello; Vatche Jambazian piano \n\nTuesday 13 February 2024 7pm; MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 20 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: A reserve $79 ($69 Concession); B reserve $59; C reserve $39 \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Paul Lewis
DESCRIPTION:Explore the enigmatic genius of Schubert with Paul Lewis.\nIllustrious English pianist Paul Lewis returns to the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall stage and transports audiences to the timeless world of Franz Schubert. \nReturning to complete his exploration of the composer’s great sonatas – this time focusing on the final three. These compositions weren’t always viewed as masterpieces\, instead they laid dormant for a decade following Schubert’s death. It wasn’t until the centenary of his passing\, well into the 20th century\, that public opinion on the breadth and dramatic expansiveness of Schubert’s final three piano works began to change. \nNow\, well into the 21st century\, Paul Lewis’s return to Melbourne follows two critically acclaimed performances in 2023 where he left audiences ‘in no doubt that he is probably the most virtuosic interpreter of Schubert today’ (Classic Melbourne). \nCommencing the evening of soul-stirring music with Schubert’s Piano Sonata No.19 in C minor\, Lewis’s artistry unveils the complex emotions and dramatic contrasts inherent in Schubert’s work. The composer’s genius continues to come to life as Lewis unravels the intricate melodies that define Schubert’s Piano Sonata No.20 in A; a captivating reminder of Schubert’s timeless allure. And finally\, Piano Sonata No.21 in B-flat\, the pinnacle of Schubert’s piano compositions. This intricate work unfolds like a musical odyssey\, and under Paul Lewis’s expertise\, becomes a transcendent experience. \n\nTuesday 6 February 2024\, 7.30pm;  MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 2 hours 30 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $115; A reserve $102 ($87 Concession); B reserve $87 ($67 Concession); C reserve $67

SUMMARY:Australian Brandenburg Orchestra: Poet of the Violin
DESCRIPTION:Virtuoso’s dazzling flights of freedom.\nVivacious. Fierce. Expressive. These are just some of the words used to describe Leila Schayegh\, one of the world’s most acclaimed Baroque violinists. SUMMARY:Australian String Quartet: Florescence
DESCRIPTION:A celebration of the string quartet across continents and contexts.\nA dramatic proclamation sets the scene as Australian composer Justin Williams’ Movement for String Quartet begins this concert with an exploration of distinct and juxtaposing musical material. From twenty-first century Australia we travel to eighteenth century Austria\, where Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet No.1 in B minor thrills with an impulsiveness that makes for a virtuosic and exuberant experience. \nHenry Purcell’s Fantasia No.6 showcases this Baroque composer’s mastery of suspension and release in a meditative ‘fancy’ before we are whisked into the program’s celebratory finale. Antonin Dvořák’s melodically rich and festive String Quartet No.14 — the composer’s final instrumental chamber work—brims with inventive interplay and influences from the composer’s experiences abroad and connection to his Bohemian homeland’s folk traditions. \n\nMonday 30 October 2023\, 7pm      MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 30 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $78 ($67 Concession); Student & Under 30 $33
