Then\, the colour and tonal language of Julie Giroux’s The Hearthstone captures the deep ambers and warmth of a burning fire. In this vein\, the centerpiece of the concert\, Likhuta’s Sure-fire (a three-movement work) laments Australia’s recent bushfires. As if in a dream\, the concert continues painting a picture of better times with William Grant Still’s Summerland\, followed by David Maslanka’s Traveler that will leave the listener in reflection. DESCRIPTION:Revel in this performance of musical risk-taking.\nA morning of musical experimentation awaits as percussionists and their piano contemporaries from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) perform a selection of works by Mozart and Hungarian-Austrian composer György Ligeti. \nFor as long as there has been music\, there have been composers experimenting and taking risks throughout their creative process. In the case of Mozart\, many of his works deemed ‘experimental’ have stood the test of time. In his Adagio for Glass Harmonica\, Mozart uses the instrument’s unique timbres to create an otherworldly sound – a sound Paganini hailed as a ‘celestial voice’. \nInvented by Benjamin Franklin in the 18th century\, the glass harmonica requires virtuosic precision and gentle care from the performers as they rub their wet fingers on the edges of glass bowls to produce ethereal and haunting tones. \nHighly celebrated for his avant-garde music-making\, the genius of György Ligeti bookends this performance of Mozart’s most demanding repertoire. First\, the boundaries of classical music are pushed to the limits with the intricate melodies and unconventional harmonies of his Chamber Concerto. DESCRIPTION:A story of ritual\, revolution\, and resurrection.\nIt only took one tiny ember to spark the destruction of 800 years of history when Notre-Dame de Paris was partially consumed by fire in April 2019\, igniting collective grief for the iconic eras\, moments\, and characters embodied in her halls. \nWhile fire has the power to destroy\, it also cleanses and purifies. The ashes create a canvas and illuminate the path forward\, to bravely begin anew. Battered\, dilapidated and restored. DESCRIPTION:Virtuoso’s dazzling flights of freedom.\nVivacious. Fierce. Expressive. These are just some of the words used to describe Leila Schayegh\, one of the world’s most acclaimed Baroque violinists. Making her long-awaited Australian debut\, the Swiss-Iranian musician takes to the stage as Guest Director to lead the Brandenburg through a brightly textured program of Baroque masterworks from JS Bach\, Leclair and Zelenka. \nCelebrated throughout Europe for her expressive interpretations of classical and contemporary repertoire\, Leila has carved a singular career. She performs on an instrument made in Cremona in 1675 by legendary luthier and founder of Casa Guarneri\, Andrea Guarneri. In a simple twist of fate\, the exceptionally promising\, then seven-year-old violin student\, saw the course of her musical life forever changed when she was offered the chance to become the custodian of the rare instrument. \nSince 2010\, Leila has been Professor of Baroque violin at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel\, Switzerland. Her performances are pure poetry and convey the freedom of a true virtuoso unrestrained by technical limitations.
