SUMMARY:Australian String Quartet – Vanguard
DESCRIPTION:A powerful program of music that radically extends the boundaries of the string quartet. \nBeethoven’s String Quartet in E-flat\, Op.127\, is the first of what are known as his late quartets. When premiered in 1825\, it struck listeners with its innovation of expression and musical themes which transcended its time\, making it a revolutionary work in the history of the string quartet. Its exploration of human emotions and musical ideas continues to resonate with audiences across generations\, solidifying its relevance to this day. \nFor his second commission from the Australian String Quartet\, composer Harry Sdraulig will produce his first full-length work\, having previously composed a shorter work\, Swirl\, for the ensemble in 2020. Expect rich lyricism and harmony\, and intricate\, driving rhythms. \nMoravian-born American composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s String Quartet No.2 in E-flat\, written in 1933\, showcases his mastery of Romanticism. Combining lush harmonies with intricate interweaving of musical voices\, this quartet reveals his versatility as a composer beyond his acclaimed works for the screen. Traversing a rich tapestry of feelings\, spanning longing to exuberance\, it demonstrates Korngold’s position as one of the great post-Romantics.\nMonday 1 July 2024 7pm \nMonday 1 July 2024 7pm\nMelbourne Recital Centre\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \nTICKETS: Standard $78 ($67 Concession); 35 & Under $35; Student $15

SUMMARY:Yeol Eum Son
DESCRIPTION:Poetic elegance\, expressive nuance\, and bold dramatic contrasts.\nFollowing an explosive Melbourne Recital Centre debut in 2022\, South Korean pianist Yeol Eum Son’s virtuosic artistry and brilliance was immediately slated for a near-immediate return. Boldly exploring the 19th century masterpieces of Bizet\, Czerny\, and Beethoven\, Yeol Eum’s profound musicality has earned her acclaim\, with critics lauding her ‘breathtaking dexterity and finger control’ (Pianist Magazine) and ‘light\, fine-pointed energy and agile precision’ (Sydney Morning Herald). Having made a striking debut with renowned orchestras including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales\, NDR Radiophilharmonie\, and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra\, Yeol Eum’s pianism is an arresting blend of poetic elegance\, expressive nuance\, and fierce dramatic contrasts. \nWith technical prowess and quiet intensity\, she explores a diverse repertoire with emotional acuity\, seeking to unveil what Yeol Eum describes as ‘the pure essence’ of each composition. Never one to shy away from pushing artistic boundaries\, Yeol Eum’s curation defies convention. In her only Australian recital\, her fearless approach is evident as she takes audiences on an exhilarating journey through Beethoven’s monumental Piano Sonata No.29 in B-flat ‘Hammerklavier’\, Op.106. Rarely performed\, it stands as one of the pinnacle piano sonatas of all time and is regarded as one of the most demanding solo works in the classical piano repertoire. \nPost-Concert Talk\nFollowing this extraordinary performance\, Yeol Eum Son joins Melbourne Recital Centre’s Director of Programming\, Marshall McGuire\, in the ground floor foyer for a 20-minute discussion about her artistry\, career\, and more. Take a seat and enjoy this perfect conclusion to your musical experience. \n\nTuesday 4 June 2024 7.30pm; MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $115; A reserve $102 ($87 Concession); B reserve $87 ($67 Concession); C reserve $67

SUMMARY:Melbourne Chamber Orchestra: Blazing Trails
DESCRIPTION:Music can be a powerful advocate\, a voice heard more loudly than the spoken word.\nJoin Melbourne Chamber Orchestra as they celebrate composers who made the world better through music and amplified overlooked voices — whether it was Vivaldi’s work in music education\, Mahler’s reappraisal of the work of Beethoven\, or Florence Price’s tireless advocacy for women of colour. \nClaire Edwardes is Australia’s most recognisable percussionist\, a trailblazing icon\, a passionate advocate for her instruments\, a champion of new music\, and a bold\, memorable performer. \nClaire is the soloist with MCO for Natalie Williams’ percussion concerto Steeling Fire. The work pays homage to the women who fought for the right to work at the Port Kembla Steelworks in Wollongong in 1980\, and features an arsenal of metallic sounds\, some of which were sourced from the Steelworks. An effervescent Vivaldi concerto\, written originally for the young recorder players at the orphanage in Venice where he taught\, will be revealed anew on the vibraphone. \nThursday 30 May 7.30pm & Sunday 2 June 2.30pm 2024; MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 45 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \nTICKETS: $140 – $30

SUMMARY:Musica Viva Australia: Esmé Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Eloquent. Spellbinding. Monumental. Exquisite.\nHow else can we describe the Esmé Quartet? This young German-based\, largely South Korean ensemble launched their international career by winning first prize at the 2018 International String Quartet Competition at London’s Wigmore Hall. They then embarked on a whirlwind year of concerts in North America\, Hong Kong\, and Japan. \nFor their Australian debut\, they play works that are the epitome of youth: an early work of Webern overflows with romantic invention\, while Mendelssohn’s second String Quartet blazes with the heart-on-sleeve emotion of a teenage genius; and young Australian composer Jack Frerer’s Spiral Sequences is an exhilarating roller-coaster ride. Add to this Claude Debussy’s only string quartet\, brimming with rhythmic and harmonic invention. \nEsmé comes from the medieval French word for ‘beloved’. Be among the first to discover why everyone loves Esmé. \n\nTuesday 14 May 2024 7pm   MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $141 ($128 Concession); A reserve $115 ($102 Concession); B reserve $87 ($76 Concession)\nC reserve $62 ($55 Concession)

SUMMARY:Mostly Mozart – Glass Harmonica
DESCRIPTION:Revel in this performance of musical risk-taking.\nA morning of musical experimentation awaits as percussionists and their piano contemporaries from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) perform a selection of works by Mozart and Hungarian-Austrian composer György Ligeti. \nFor as long as there has been music\, there have been composers experimenting and taking risks throughout their creative process. In the case of Mozart\, many of his works deemed ‘experimental’ have stood the test of time. In his Adagio for Glass Harmonica\, Mozart uses the instrument’s unique timbres to create an otherworldly sound – a sound Paganini hailed as a ‘celestial voice’. \nInvented by Benjamin Franklin in the 18th century\, the glass harmonica requires virtuosic precision and gentle care from the performers as they rub their wet fingers on the edges of glass bowls to produce ethereal and haunting tones. \nHighly celebrated for his avant-garde music-making\, the genius of György Ligeti bookends this performance of Mozart’s most demanding repertoire. First\, the boundaries of classical music are pushed to the limits with the intricate melodies and unconventional harmonies of his Chamber Concerto. Rounding out the hour-long performance is the seventh movement of his Musica Ricercata – a collection of pieces in which Ligeti attempted to build a compositional style from the ground up – this time arranged for percussion. \n\nTuesday 16 April 2024 11am; MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $49 ($42 Concession)

He epitomises both virtuoso and storyteller with a magnetism that enraptures audiences across the world. \nReceiving a five-star review for his recent concert at Royal Festival Hall London playing the Goldberg Variations\, Ólafsson ‘was a hypnotic presence at the keyboard\, a rangy giant whose head bent so low at times his nose nearly brushed the keys.
