SUMMARY:Australian Brandenburg Orchestra – Handel's House
DESCRIPTION:Step inside and indulge!\nFrom the moment Yukie Sato enters Handel’s House\, you’ll feel the force of her gravity. It might be the house that Handel built\, but it is this glowing soprano who makes it her own. \nThe purity of her voice is set to deliver a Handel experience with uncompromising clarity\, beckoning her audiences to surrender to the siren as she holds us in the palm of her hand\, cracks open our hearts\, and lovingly reassembles them piece by piece. \nMaking her highly anticipated Australian debut\, Japan’s Yukie Sato is the songbird who refuses to be defined or caged. Be transfixed as the international soprano takes flight through Handel’s most cherished arias. Revel in the Japanese-born\, Swiss-educated diva’s technical and innate musicality and natural charisma perfectly befitting of Handel’s distinctly Germanic approach to Italian style. \nA vocal icon that cannot be dulled\, prepare for Sato to weave a vivid tapestry that will engulf and envelope you entirely. That is her power\, wielded like a burning sword. In a rare opportunity to experience the soprano outside of Japan\, it’s your choice to shy from her brightness or surrender to her flame as she graces us for this brief but epic moment in time\, and then she is gone. \nCatch her while you can! \n\nThursday 12\, Saturday 14 & Sunday 15 September 2024 \n\nElisabeth Murdoch Hall\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $196\nA reserve $175 ($109 Concession)\nB reserve $127 ($79 Concession)\nC reserve $95 ($59 Concession)\nD reserve $60\nE reserve $30 \nUnder 40\nA – D reserve $40 \nSenior\nA reserve $157*\nB reserve $114* \nStudent\nA – E reserve $20 \nApplicable 5pm Sunday matinee concerts only. *

SUMMARY:Australian Chamber Orchestra – Tognetti. Mendelssohn. Bach
DESCRIPTION:Sparks fly and melodies soar when Richard Tognetti directs music close to the ACO’s heart.\nThe Australian Chamber Orchestra is one of the most acclaimed chamber orchestras in the world and is renowned for their inspired programming\, unrivalled virtuosity\, energy and individuality. Under the direction of Artistic Director Richard Tognetti\, they take audiences on the adventure to create truly transformative experiences. \nOne of the great prodigies\, Mendelssohn wrote his sunny Octet at just 16 years of age. SUMMARY:Augustin Hadelich
DESCRIPTION:Witness ‘one of the most exciting violinists in the world’ (Süddeutsche Zeitung) in a one-night-only recital.\nExperience an extraordinary evening with acclaimed German-American virtuoso and GRAMMY® Award winner\, Augustin Hadelich\, as he graces the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall stage. Revered for his awe-inspiring technique\, profound interpretations\, and ethereal resonance\, Hadelich’s performance transcends the ordinary; as noted by The Washington Post\, ‘The essence of Hadelich’s playing is beauty.’ With a repertoire that spans collaborations with preeminent American orchestras and global luminaries such as the Berliner Philharmoniker\, Concertgebouworkest\, and NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo\, Hadelich’s artistry knows no bounds. \nAbout the concert\nIn his only Australian recital\, witness Hadelich up close and personal as he takes listeners on a remarkable journey through luminous masterpieces\, performing Bach’s Partita No.3 in E and American composer David Lang’s contemplative Mystery Sonatas. \nA historic moment unfolds as the resonant works of African-American composer Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson’s Blue/s Forms come to life for the very first time in Australia. Originally a tribute to Sanford Allen\, the first African-American violinist to play in the New York Philharmonic\, this composition evokes jazz-infused melodies from its first note\, marking a groundbreaking debut for Melbourne Recital Centre’s 15th birthday celebration. \nPost-Concert Talk\nFollowing this extraordinary performance\, Augustin Hadelich joins Melbourne Recital Centre’s Director of Programming\, Marshall McGuire\, in the ground floor foyer for a 20-minute discussion about his artistry\, career\, and more. SUMMARY:Mostly Mozart – Magnificent Minor
DESCRIPTION:Experience the transcendent power of two musical titans on full display.\nIn this mid-winter Mostly Mozart\, violinists Jakub Jakowicz and Sophie Rowell join musicians from the Australian National Academy of Music for a morning of 18th-century masterworks. \nJourneying back to the heart of the Baroque era with J.S. Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins\, the overlapping\, intertwining dialogue between the two soloists and the ensemble showcases the glory of the era. With Polish-born Jakub Jakowicz’ career of chamber music artistry and one of Australia’s most-treasured musicians\, Sophie Rowell\, at the helm\, Bach’s combination of rhythmic power and sustained songfulness leaps across centuries to bring delight to a troubled world. \nWritten in a blaze of inspiration in the summer of 1788\, Mozart’s Symphony No.40 defies the descriptors of ‘powerful’ and ‘dramatic’. With the fiery urgency of the opening\, the graceful serenity of the second movement\, and finally\, the spirited finale\, Mozart’s emotional rollercoaster of melodies showcases the energetic power of the ANAM Orchestra. \nMorning Tea: Join us for coffee plus sweet and savory treats from 10am in the ground floor foyer. \nFriday 9 August 2024 11am\nDuration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \nMelbourne Recital Centre\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nTICKETS: Standard $49 ($42 Concession)

SUMMARY:Joep Beving
DESCRIPTION:‘A quiet revolt against the madness.’ – Joep Beving\nAfter captivating audiences with his sold-out performance in 2017\, Dutch pianist and neo-classical master Joep Beving makes his long-awaited return to the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall stage. SUMMARY:Musica Viva Australia – The Choir of King's College\, Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:Top hats and heavenly voices. \nEvery year on Christmas Eve\, millions of listeners around the world tune in to hear The Choir of King’s College\, Cambridge celebrate the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols in a glorious display of the British choral tradition. Now this unique and precious sound\, the product of generations of voices and centuries of music\, returns to Australia for a  featuring some of their best-loved repertoire.  \nAlongside traditional hymns and soaring anthems\, the Choir will perform Stravinsky’s Mass for choir and double wind quintet\, his searing and deeply personal search for meaning\, and a touchstone of the choral repertoire. \nIt’s not all top hats and heavenly voices: just as boys grow up and voices change\, the Choir’s work changes across the generations. Which is why Daniel Hyde\, Director since 2019\, asked us what the Choir of King’s College\, Cambridge might bring to Australia\, and what they might learn from us. Integral to their performance is a new work commissioned by Australian composer Damian Barbeler\, working with a text by Judith Nangala Crispin (a descendent of the Bpangerang people)\, which grapples with threads of history to come up with something new and compelling.  \nMeet the Artists \nFollowing the concert\, please join The Choir of King’s College\, Cambridge for a post-concert discussion onstage in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall. \nTuesday 23 July 2024 7pm \nMelbourne Recital Centre\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 45 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \nTickets: Premium $141 ($128 Concession); A reserve $115 ($102 Concession); B reserve $87 ($76 Concession); C reserve $62 ($55 Concession)\nUnder 40 $40

SUMMARY:Australian String Quartet – Vanguard
DESCRIPTION:A powerful program of music that radically extends the boundaries of the string quartet. \nBeethoven’s String Quartet in E-flat\, Op.127\, is the first of what are known as his late quartets. When premiered in 1825\, it struck listeners with its innovation of expression and musical themes which transcended its time\, making it a revolutionary work in the history of the string quartet. Its exploration of human emotions and musical ideas continues to resonate with audiences across generations\, solidifying its relevance to this day. \nFor his second commission from the Australian String Quartet\, composer Harry Sdraulig will produce his first full-length work\, having previously composed a shorter work\, Swirl\, for the ensemble in 2020. Expect rich lyricism and harmony\, and intricate\, driving rhythms. \nMoravian-born American composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s String Quartet No.2 in E-flat\, written in 1933\, showcases his mastery of Romanticism. Combining lush harmonies with intricate interweaving of musical voices\, this quartet reveals his versatility as a composer beyond his acclaimed works for the screen. Traversing a rich tapestry of feelings\, spanning longing to exuberance\, it demonstrates Korngold’s position as one of the great post-Romantics.\nMonday 1 July 2024 7pm \nMonday 1 July 2024 7pm\nMelbourne Recital Centre\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \nTICKETS: Standard $78 ($67 Concession); 35 & Under $35; Student $15

SUMMARY:Yeol Eum Son
DESCRIPTION:Poetic elegance\, expressive nuance\, and bold dramatic contrasts.\nFollowing an explosive Melbourne Recital Centre debut in 2022\, South Korean pianist Yeol Eum Son’s virtuosic artistry and brilliance was immediately slated for a near-immediate return. Boldly exploring the 19th century masterpieces of Bizet\, Czerny\, and Beethoven\, Yeol Eum’s profound musicality has earned her acclaim\, with critics lauding her ‘breathtaking dexterity and finger control’ (Pianist Magazine) and ‘light\, fine-pointed energy and agile precision’ (Sydney Morning Herald). Having made a striking debut with renowned orchestras including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales\, NDR Radiophilharmonie\, and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra\, Yeol Eum’s pianism is an arresting blend of poetic elegance\, expressive nuance\, and fierce dramatic contrasts. \nWith technical prowess and quiet intensity\, she explores a diverse repertoire with emotional acuity\, seeking to unveil what Yeol Eum describes as ‘the pure essence’ of each composition. Never one to shy away from pushing artistic boundaries\, Yeol Eum’s curation defies convention. In her only Australian recital\, her fearless approach is evident as she takes audiences on an exhilarating journey through Beethoven’s monumental Piano Sonata No.29 in B-flat ‘Hammerklavier’\, Op.106. Rarely performed\, it stands as one of the pinnacle piano sonatas of all time and is regarded as one of the most demanding solo works in the classical piano repertoire. \nPost-Concert Talk\nFollowing this extraordinary performance\, Yeol Eum Son joins Melbourne Recital Centre’s Director of Programming\, Marshall McGuire\, in the ground floor foyer for a 20-minute discussion about her artistry\, career\, and more. Take a seat and enjoy this perfect conclusion to your musical experience. \n\nTuesday 4 June 2024 7.30pm; MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $115; A reserve $102 ($87 Concession); B reserve $87 ($67 Concession); C reserve $67

SUMMARY:Melbourne Chamber Orchestra: Blazing Trails
DESCRIPTION:Music can be a powerful advocate\, a voice heard more loudly than the spoken word.\nJoin Melbourne Chamber Orchestra as they celebrate composers who made the world better through music and amplified overlooked voices — whether it was Vivaldi’s work in music education\, Mahler’s reappraisal of the work of Beethoven\, or Florence Price’s tireless advocacy for women of colour. \nClaire Edwardes is Australia’s most recognisable percussionist\, a trailblazing icon\, a passionate advocate for her instruments\, a champion of new music\, and a bold\, memorable performer. \nClaire is the soloist with MCO for Natalie Williams’ percussion concerto Steeling Fire. The work pays homage to the women who fought for the right to work at the Port Kembla Steelworks in Wollongong in 1980\, and features an arsenal of metallic sounds\, some of which were sourced from the Steelworks. An effervescent Vivaldi concerto\, written originally for the young recorder players at the orphanage in Venice where he taught\, will be revealed anew on the vibraphone. \nThursday 30 May 7.30pm & Sunday 2 June 2.30pm 2024; MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 45 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \nTICKETS: $140 – $30
