SUMMARY:Acacia Quartet
DESCRIPTION:A touching memoir\, an uplifting story.\nLisa Stewart (violin)\, Myee Clohessy (violin)\, Stefan Duwe (viola) and Anna Martin-Scrase (cello) are Acacia Quartet and together they explore a memoir of composer Lyle Chan’s six years as an AIDS activist during the epidemic’s bleakest years in the 1990s. \nThis work tells the story of how activists transformed a stigmatized\, fatal disease. Like the autobiographical quartets of Steve Reich or Shostakovich\, Lyle Chan’s AIDS memoir is in turn harrowing and touching but ultimately an intensely uplifting story of a community that fought against all odds for their lives and won. \nPresented by Melbourne Recital Centre and Acacia Quartet

SUMMARY:The Holy Sonnets of John Donne
DESCRIPTION:Faith in a tortured world & hope of redemption\nComposed in two weeks after his return from concerts at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp when Britten was in bed with a high fever in 1945\, The Holy Sonnets of John Donne pulsate with a hatred of war. \nDedicated to Peter Pears\, and composed in homage to Purcell\, the poems address the issue of faith in a tortured world of death and misery\, with a link to the hope of redemption. \nAcclaimed chamber music duo Eidit Golder and Michael Smallwood are joined by their colleague and Australian Chamber Orchestra cellist Julian Thompson\, for two performances celebrating Britten and those who influenced him. \nMASC conclude this elegiac program with the world premiere of Melbourne composer\, Adam Yee’s setting of the Hebrew liturgical poem Yigdal. \nPresented by Melbourne Recital Centre & Melbourne Art Song Collective

SUMMARY:Syzygy Ensemble Rhetoric
DESCRIPTION:Music as persuasion\nThe musicians of Syzygy Ensemble share a deep empathy with music of our own time as well as an unbridled desire to share this enthusiasm with audiences in a way that may stretch your ears but never slap you in the face. \nSyzygy explores the concept of music as a persuasive tool\, music as passionate argument. \nThe works range from Ives’ last violin sonata\, which invokes the religious fervour of evangelical hymns in order to both pay homage to and mock the church-goers of his day\, through to the very recently composed Old Kings in Exile by Brett Dean. \nThis moving work evokes a plea for the continuity of memory of those we have lost\, and details the harrowing challenges faced by the dying. \nPresented by Melbourne Recital Centre & Syzygy Ensemble

They return to the Salon after yearly sold out concerts to perform two masterworks of the piano and cello repertoire.
