SUMMARY:The Australian Ballet: Jewels
DESCRIPTION:A Balanchine masterpiece \n\n\n\n\nGeorge Balanchine’s Jewels is a three-part ballet celebrating his vision of three jewels. Visually and thematically structured around the motifs of Emeralds\, Rubies and Diamonds\, the piece explores the idea of movement radiating from the body through each specific jewel. \nMaking its world premiere at New York City Ballet in 1967\, Jewels showcases Balanchine’s atmospheric musicality. These contrasting works explore his time in Paris\, New York and St Petersburg through the harmony of music and the defining visual elements of colour\, shape and silhouette. Each of the three acts is distinct in style and mood\, set to music by three different composers: Fauré for Emeralds\, Stravinsky for Rubies\, Tchaikovsky for Diamonds. \nOpulent costumes and sets unify each of the three sections to achieve one regal whole\, which will showcase the breathtaking classical precision of The Australian Ballet’s artists. \nA mesmerising spectacle that is both soft and sharp\, racy and refined\, flashy and majestic\, Jewels is a lavish work capturing the company’s celebratory spirit in its milestone 60th anniversary year. \nArts Centre Melbourne\, State Theatre     29 June – 8 July 2023     TICKETS: $52 – $30 \nThursday 29 Jun 7:30; Friday 30 Jun 7:30; Saturday 1 Jul 1:30 PM\, 7:30 PM; Monday 3 Jul 6:30; Tuesday 4 Jul 7:30 PM; Wednesday 5 Jul 1:30 PM\, 7:30 PM; Thursday 6 Jul 7:30 PM; Friday 7 Jul 7:30 PM; Saturday 8 Jul 1:30 PM\, 7:30 PM

DESCRIPTION:A new program from two of Australia’s leading choreographers \n\n\n\n\nTHE HUM Daniel Riley \nEvoking a search for cultural perpetuity\, the first work THE HUM is a new dance-theatre work created by Daniel Riley\, Wiradjuri man\, and Artistic Director of Australian Dance Theatre. Centred upon the tangible yet invisible creative connection between performers\, orchestra and audience\, this work will unite artists of Australian Dance Theatre and The Australian Ballet in a never before seen collaboration. \nWorking together to realise a new ceremonial space of sharing and communality spanning rehearsal studio and stage\, this work forges new relationships and develops a shared physicality\, exploding with future focussed visions. \nThe work is enriched by a brand new commissioned score for a full orchestra by celebrated Yorta Yorta composer and soprano Deborah Cheetham AO\, the first female First Nations composer to be commissioned by The Australian Ballet. \nTaungurung fashion designer and educator Annette Sax will design bespoke contemporary costumes inspired by the textures and elements of the land. Adelaide based multidisciplinary artist Matthew Adey will also develop a set and lighting design for this world-premiere collaboration. \nTHE HUM celebrates a resonance between our musicians\, our dancers and the swell of our land\, celebrating the idea of the individual artist as part of a broader creative ecosystem of shared knowledge\, emotion and energy. \nParagon Alice Topp \nThe Australian Ballet’s Resident Choreographer Alice Topp will premiere her new work Paragon in 2023\, a powerful tribute to the company’s origins\, strength and evolution. \nParagon explores the pursuit of perfection and excellence in the art form of ballet\, while also referencing the idea that the company was formed under conditions of pressure and immense expectations\, much like a diamond in the natural world. In the company’s own diamond anniversary year\, Paragon is a gift that celebrates a collective artistic vibrancy\, and the rich tapestry of artists that have shaped Australia’s ballet landscape. \nTopp’s work is an alchemical mix of this generation’s most exciting emerging talent\, and the masters and icons of past decades. In realising this work\, Topp will join forces with longtime collaborator Lighting Designer Jon Buswell\, along with Australian composer Christopher Gordon and Costume Designer Aleisa Jelbart. \nThrough a rich palette of intergenerational company artists\, Paragon is a modern work that challenges and moves audiences in a journey embodying the heart and soul of The Australian Ballet. \n\n\n\nFriday 16 Jun\, 7:30 PM; Saturday 17 Jun 1:30 PM\, 7:30 PM; Monday 19 Jun 6:30 PM; Tuesday 20 Jun 7:30 PM\n\n\nWednesday 21 Jun 7:30 PM; Thursday 22 Jun 7:30 PM; Friday 23 Jun 7:30 PM; Saturday 24 Jun 1:30 PM\, 7:30 PM\nArts Centre Melbourne\, State Theatre\nTICKETS: $38 – $192

SUMMARY:The Australian Ballet: Don Quixote
DESCRIPTION:Based on the iconic 1973 film \n\n\n\n\nIn a creative feat that will see ballet transposed from screen to stage\, Don Quixote recreates Rudolf Nureyev and Robert Helpmann’s 1973 film in a wildly colourful\, palpably textured stage spectacle. A tribute to the legacy of the legendary Russian dancer and director who was a guest of The Australian Ballet in the early 1970s\, this production resembles a painting come to life\, enriched by a Spanish-flavoured score by veteran 19th-century ballet composer Ludwig Minkus\, and vibrant costumes and sets that immerse audiences in a sultry experience of classical ballet. \nDon Quixote moves from a rowdy Barcelona port to the ethereal happenings of the Don’s dream\, to the candle-lit finery of the wedding celebration. A spirited ballet bursting with humour\, the story follows the barber Basilio\, who wins the hand of his girlfriend Kitri with the help of the visionary knight. \nNo detail is left unexplored in this rendition of Don Quixote. Emphasising the integral role of the set in evoking the film’s seductive atmosphere\, the stage brims with everything from flowers to candles\, evoking the bustling streets of Spain. \nFrom the ballet’s spectacular lifts in Act I\, to rousing ensemble scenes and a glittering confection of tutus\, Don Quixote is a multi-sensory feast that reminds us of ballet’s power in the historical creative canon. \n\nPerformance dates & times\n\n\n\nWednesday 15 Mar 7:30 PM\n\n\nThursday 16 Mar 7:30 PM\n\n\nFriday 17 Mar 7:30 PM\n\n\nSaturday 18 Mar 1:30 PM\, 7:30 PM\n\n\nMonday 20 Mar 6:30 PM\n\n\nTuesday 21 Mar 7:30 PM\n\n\nWednesday 22 Mar 1:30 PM\, 7:30 PM\n\n\nThursday 23 Mar 7:30 PM\n\n\nFriday 24 Mar 7:30 PM\nSaturday 25 Mar 1:30 PM\, 7:30 PM\n\n\nRunning Time2 hours and 30 minutes (including two intervals) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Adult $52.00 – $261.00; Senior::: $52.00 – $261.00; Pensioner: $46.00 – $209.00\n\n\nUnder 30 $46.00 – $209.00; Student: $46.00 – $209.00; Child: $38.00 – $130.00\n\n\nDynamic pricing applies to this event.
