SUMMARY:Victorian Opera: Sweeney Todd
DESCRIPTION:“And what if none of their souls were saved? They went to their maker impeccably shaved.” \nOnce\, there was a barber who had it all – a happy life\, a beautiful wife. But it all ended in a savage act of betrayal. Enter Sweeney Todd\, “the demon barber of Fleet Street”. \nFrom the maestro of musical theatre Stephen Sondheim\, and the storytelling genius of Hugh Wheeler\, comes a gripping tale of tragedy and revenge set in the depths of London. Sweeney Todd poses a suave and perilous figure with his rising desire for vengeance. Alongside the beguiling and eccentric Mrs. Lovett\, they hatch a twisted plan – equal parts genius and ghastly. SUMMARY:Bangarra Dance Theatre: Yuldea
DESCRIPTION:From the incomparable storytellers of Bangarra Dance Theatre comes a major new work. \n\n\n\n\nWe are memory.\nGlimpsed through shimmering light on water.\nA story place where black oaks stand watch.\nCarved into trees and painted on rocks.\nNorth – South – East – West.\nA brittle landscape of life and loss.\nA celestial symphony crossing time and space. \nAt Yuldea\, stories hover in the sky. The stars reveal a divine Songline\, stretching between earth and sky.  \nFrances Rings’ first work as Artistic Director is a ceremonial affirmation of history and heritage. Yuldea awakens the earth and sky worlds to tell the story of the Aṉangu people of the Great Victorian Desert. \nYuldea explores the moment traditional life collided with the industrial ambition of a growing nation. In 1917\, the two halves of the Transcontinental Railway met at the precious water soak on the edge of the Nullarbor\, Yuldi Kapi. \nGreat metal serpents scarred the landscape\, draining all water from the sacred soak. Then came the black mist of the atomic testing at Maralinga\, forcing the Aṉangu people to leave their desert homelands where they had lived for millennia. \nNow memories lay scattered\, like the Aṉangu people\, displaced from their home. Remnants of colonial progress are swallowed by sand. But the Aṉangu endure\, determined to keep strong their knowledge systems of land and sky\, honouring their eternal bonds of kinship between people and place. \nYuldea features original music by Leon Rodgers with featured songs by award-winning electronic pop duo Electric Fields\, inspired by Yuldea and the Aṉangu people. \nDesigners Elizabeth Gadsby (sets)\, Jennifer Irwin (costumes) and Karen Norris (Lighting) create a desert world on stage. \n\n\n27 September – 7 October             Playhouse Theatre\, Arts Centre Melbourne\n \nCommunity night Wednesday 27 September\, 7:30 PM*\nSeason Monday 6:30 PM; Tuesdays 6:30 PM; Wednesdays 2:00 PM\, 7:30 PM; Thursdays 7:30 PM; Fridays 7:30 PM \nTICKETS: $54 – $114
