SUMMARY:Australian Youth Orchestra: Mood - Mahler and Wagner
DESCRIPTION:Music as stormy as the depths of winter\, blazing with the fiery energy of the Australian Youth Orchestra. \nUnder the baton of Nicholas Carter\, almost 100 of Australia’s best and brightest young musicians assemble for some of the most momentous works of the orchestral world. \nMahler and Wagner were two formidable figures in an era when music was all about grand emotions\, big sounds\, and pushing boundaries. Wagner’s transcendent Prelude und Liebestod is a harrowing rumination on the perils of love\, and trembles with anticipation. Passion and heartache swell through the orchestra\, stirring from the opening touch of the cello. \nMahler’s Symphony No.5 is bold. Hold your breath as solo trumpet commands its opening; the herald of a work that twists and turns through tension and tenderness. Out of the anguish of a funeral march unfurls the heart-rending release of the symphony’s Adagietto\, one of history’s greatest love letters\, rich with eternal yearning. Across 70 minutes of music\, joy\, grief and hope vie for their place in the spotlight. \nOpening the program\, the afternoon features the world premiere of Overt by Australian composer Iain Grandage. Each young musician shines in this concerto for orchestra\, written in honour of Colin Cornish AM who led AYO from 2005 to 2023. \nThis is bold music. Join us for an unforgettable afternoon of drama\, with Mood: Mahler and Wagner. \nSunday 14 July 5:00 PM\nRunning Time: 2 hours 15 minutes (including 20 minute interval)\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \nPrice range: Standard $50.00 – $65.00; Concession**$40.00; Youth (Under 26 years)$30.00

SUMMARY:The University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring
DESCRIPTION:Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring is one of the most important pieces of music of the 20th Century.  \n\n\n\n\nHowever\, in 1913\, audiences (not accustomed to hearing such dissonant and paganistic music) rioted at the world premiere\, rather than listen. Full of ritualistic and frenzied dances\, it ends with “The Chosen One” dancing to her death\, to appease the God of Spring. Afterwards\, Puccini stated that The Rite of Spring was “the work of a madman” and Saint-Saëns declared (and referring to the opening high bassoon solo) “if that’s a bassoon then I’m a baboon”. Jonathan Cross now suggests that the infamous riot occurred at the second performance\, not the world premiere\, and may have been a carefully orchestrated (and very successful) publicity stunt by Sergei Diaghilev\, founder of the Ballet Russes. \nThe world premiere of Barry Conyngham’s Full Moon (scored for two orchestras) will open this University of Melbourne concert\, after which they will be joined by Richard Narroway\, to perform Elgar’s divine Cello Concerto. \n\n\n\n\nSunday 12 May 5:00 PM\, Running Time1 hour 45 minutes\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Limit of 2 tickets per transaction. Please note you will not be charged a delivery fee for this event. Select your preferred delivery method and no charge will be applied at the payment stage.\nFREE\nLimit of 2 tickets apply per transaction

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Jaime conducts Debussy and Strauss
DESCRIPTION:From Greek tragedies to Marvel movies\, the Hero protagonist is an enduring feature of storytelling.  \n\n\n\n\nJoin the MSO under the baton of Chief Conductor Jaime Martin for this fast-paced\, action-packed homage to the heroic. \nTurn-of-the-century English composer Ethel Smyth was a heroic rebel of the highest order. A bisexual leader of the suffragette movement\, she served a stint in prison\, and challenged the prejudices of the musical establishment\, all with a flourish of anti-authoritarian flair. Her intensely powerful and socially-damning 1906 opera The Wreckers follows a hypocritical community of Cornish plunderers who lure ships amidst raging storms onto rocks to loot their cargo. \nInspired by Beethoven’s Eroica (heroic) Symphony\, Strauss wrote his tone poem\, Ein Heldenleben\, to depict the various key ingredients in the life of a hero\, including Adversaries\, Companions\, Battles\, and Works of Peace. Strauss strenuously denied allegations that he had based the work on himself\, but later admitted that he felt he was ‘no less interesting than Napoleon’\, and indeed\, the work quotes many of Strauss’ earlier works. Regardless – Ein Heldenleben\, with triumphant brass and swelling romantic lyricism – is a flattering picture of any heroic subject. \nDebussy’s divine masterpiece\, La Mer\, is a rich and evocative portrayal of the sea and its many moods. A master of musical colour\, Debussy captures his lifelong love of the sea – a romance that had once almost led him to become a sailor. In this shimmering work\, he reveals his attachment to “my old friend\, the sea; it is always endless and beautiful.” Completed in Eastbourne on the English Channel coast\, Debussy also drew on visual inspiration from an earlier generation of painters\, including Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa\, which was a source of key inspiration for Debussy\, and became the cover of the score. \n\nThursday 9 May\, 7:30 PM; Saturday 11 May\, 2:00 PM   Running Time1 hour 50 minutes (including interval)\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\nTICKETS: $20 – $139

SUMMARY:MSO Mornings: Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the arrival of Spring with American superstar violinist Esther Yoo under the baton of MSO Principal Guest Conductor Xian Zhang. \n\n\n\n\nThis program evokes the abundance of springtime\, featuring new beginnings and new life. \nSchumann wrote his Spring Symphony during the depths of a dark German winter as a pastoral homage to different aspects of the season. We hear its wondrous emergence out of snowy bleakness\, the special atmosphere of a springtime evening\, ‘merry playmates’\, and nature in full bloom at the height of its glory. \nAt the time of its composition\, Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto was considered an innovative reinvention of the genre in the way it foregrounded the solo violin. Esther Yoo makes her mark on this sparkling\, turbulent\, and floridly virtuosic work – described in 1906 by violinist Joseph Joachim as ‘the heart’s jewel’ of violin concertos. \n\nFriday 8 Sep 11:00 AM    Running Time 1 hour\n\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \nTICKETS: $55 – $97

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra presents Mendelssohn and Brahms
DESCRIPTION:Sir Andrew Davis returns to lead the MSO for the first time as Chief Conductor Laureate. \n\n\n\n\nDavis will be joined by MSO Young Artist in Association Christian Li\, who will tackle Mendelssohn’s astonishing Violin Concerto. \nCarl Vine’s MicroSymphony kicks into gear with an explosive beginning and barely eases in energy for the remaining ten minutes. SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Bruch Violin Concerto - Reflections
DESCRIPTION:Fabian Russell leads the MSO in a collection of virtuosic works inspired by nature and folk music from around the world. \n\n\n\n\nAustralian composer Harry Sdraulig’s evocatively titled works are often inspired by the beauty and power of nature. Here\, Torrent comes to life – from frenzied furiosity to thick stagnancy and back again – under the baton of much-loved Australian conductor Fabian Russell. \nMax Bruch’s First Violin Concerto is a bravura showpiece for violinists that has never waned in popularity with audiences. It is expertly handled here by fifteen-year old Edward Walton\, who recently won Junior 2nd Prize in the prestigious Menuhin Competition. \nBased on folk dances and ecclesiastical chants\, but with modern hints such as the inclusion of saxophone\, Symphonic Dances was the last work Rachmaninov ever composed. Virtuosic playing\, heaving energy\, and gentle\, lingering melodies make this unforgettable work an enduring favourite of audiences the world over. \nTickets\n\n\n\nStandard: $69.00 – $129.00\n\n\nConcession*: $64.00 – $124.00

SUMMARY:MSO: Sonority and Silence - Tchaikovsky's Pathétique
DESCRIPTION:The MSO uncovers the spaces between sonority and silence in this program\, directed by Alpesh Chauhan\, Associate Conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. \n\n\n\n\nWith work performed all over the world\, British-born Thomas Adès is one of the most highly acclaimed living opera composers. This ballroom music from his 1995 opera Powder her Face features sleazy clarinets and characterful brass – high energy musical flirtation with a scandalous lilt\, reminiscent of the iconic dance scenes from Bernstein’s West Side Story. \nAustralian composer Anna Cawrse describes The Rest is Silence as “a prayer\, a celebration\, and a meditation on the quiet still spaces\, the silence amidst the hustle\, and the enduring power of music”. This concerto features MSO Principal Cor Anglais Michael Pisani in an exploration of this remarkable instrument\, often used to express music’s most melancholic\, bittersweet\, and emotionally profound moments. \nTchaikovsky wrote that his Sixth Symphony was “the best thing I ever composed or shall compose” – a big claim from the man who wrote Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. This remarkable symphony is infinitely relatable\, exploring a struggle between the strength of life force\, and emotional and physical demise. In a break from standard practice of the time\, this incredible cornerstone of romantic repertoire ends in quiet\, contemplative dissolution.
