SUMMARY:Opera Australia: Tannhäuser in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Before Eurovision\, there was the Wartburg Song Contest. Eurovision could only wish for this much drama! \n\n\n\n\nImagine basking in the adoration of Venus herself. Our minstrel-knight has found a paradise of passion and pleasure with the goddess of love and beauty. Life is perfect. Until\, he gets bored – and homesick. \nVenus banishes him. Much to the joy of his friends and former love Elisabeth finds himself in Wartburg and enters the upcoming song contest. Only\, he is unable to forget the sensuous realm of Venusberg\, and praises Venus in song. Horrified\, the crowd turns on him\, insisting he atone for his sins with a pilgrimage. Elisabeth prays for his soul as Tannhäuser seeks salvation in Rome. Will he be absolved\, or are Venus’ charms impossible to resist? \nUnderstatement was never in Wagner’s vocabulary. His works are epic in scale\, mythical of storyline\, and radical in their orchestration. Tannhäuser is no exception. \nFrom its thrilling overture to its shattering climax\, Wagner’s exploration of love\, religion and redemption through German folklore has fascinated and entranced audiences since its scandalous premiere. \nPresented in concert at Arts Centre Melbourne\, Wagner’s magnificent orchestrations are conducted by Asher Fisch and gloriously played by Orchestra Victoria. Featuring our own “Pilgrim’s Chorus”\, the Opera Australia Chorus\, this is “Romantic grand opera” at its legendary best. \n\n\n\n\nWednesday 17 May 6:00 PM; Saturday 20 May 6:00 PM Running TimeAprox. 4 Hours (including two intervals)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Adult $72.00 – $225.00; Pensioner $64.00 – $202.00; Student $64.00 – $202.00\n\n\nChildren 17 and Under $49.00 – $225.00

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Brahms’ Violin Concerto and more
DESCRIPTION:What do a bugle\, a bell tower\, and a child prodigy violinist have in common? Find out as the MSO explores a series of star-crossed summons and signals under the baton of Swiss-Australian conductor Elena Schwarz – formerly a prestigious Dudamel Fellow at the LA Philharmonic. \n\n\n\n\nAustralian composer Natalie Williams’ music has been performed by the likes of the MSO\, Atlanta Opera\, Berkeley Symphony\, and Musica Viva. Fourth Alarm (2013) expands a short Australian Army bugle call into a vivid work for orchestra – at once an expressive call to arms and a pressing\, rhythmic warning of danger. \nDestined for a musical life after being born in a Bohemian bell tower\, Martinů’s magical First Symphony traverses passages of bombastic character and mysterious quietness building to an explosion of orchestral colour. \nThe enduring success of Brahms’s knockout Violin Concerto was in no small way influenced by a fated musical encounter with violinist Joseph Joachim when Brahms was only fourteen. Years later\, they became friends\, and this concerto was written especially for Joachim\, who had a significant hand in its composition. International powerhouse violinist Clara-Jumi Kang puts her distinctive musical stamp on this astonishing work. \n11 March 2023; 7.30pm | Hamer Hall; TICKETS: $69 – $121

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Opening Gala - Zenith of Life
DESCRIPTION:The Ryman Healthcare Season Opening Gala: Zenith of Life\nMSO Chief Conductor Jaime Martín and superstar soprano Siobhan Stagg open Season 2023 with a new commission by MSO Composer in Residence Mary Finsterer and some of the most achingly beautiful music ever written. \n\n\n\n\nInspired by the renaissance-style motet\, Mary Finsterer’s MYSTERIUM I explores an interweaving of polyphonic musical structures within a serene and majestic setting. \n\n\nPosthumously titled Four Last Songs after his death in 1948\, Strauss’s sublime pieces farewell a life and world once-known\, but irrevocably altered by two world wars. 2023 Soloist in Residence and darling of the international stage\, Mildura-born Siobhan Stagg\, imbues these complex works with nostalgia\, naïveté\, and gentle\, world-weary heartache. \nWritten almost fifty years before Strauss’s songs and before the shadow of war\, Mahler’s Fifth Symphony is a musical journey from tragedy to triumph: a story of life\, death\, and love. The lush lyricism of Mahler’s night-time storms\, exuberant brass calls\, and musical love letters draws us into a mysterious world beyond time and space. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday 24 Feb\, 7:30 PM; Saturday 25 Feb\, 2:00 PM  Running Time 2 hours (incl. interval)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $69.00 – $121.00; Concession $64.00 – $116.00*

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Sir Andrew's Messiah
DESCRIPTION:A festive favourite is reinvigorated by Sir Andrew Davis’ new orchestration\, in its second performance in Australia. \n\n\n\n\nSir Andrew Davis sang Handel’s Messiah as a boy soprano\, and his reorchestration is a labour of love. Davis describes his aim as to “clothe the work with all the colours available from a modern orchestra; as a result [he has] used such instruments as alto flute\, oboe d’amore\, harp and some percussion including marimba and even sleigh bells!” \nMessiah contains the famous “Hallelujah!” chorus which has been quoted in popular culture since its creation. A few years after its premiere in 1742\, Messiah became an Easter time fixture\, performed to raise funds for the Foundling Hospital in London. The oratorio has never fallen out of favour and is commonly performed around Christmas. \nRather than follow a specific biblical narrative\, the text of Messiah is taken from various passages in the Old and New Testament. The vibrant arias and recitatives bring colour and urgency to the subject matter\, with Handel utilising visceral word-painting throughout. \nArtists: Jacqueline Porter – Soprano; Catherine Carby – Alto; Andrew Goodwin – Tenor \n\n\n\n\nSaturday 10 Dec 7:00 PM; Sunday 11 Dec 5:00 PM; Hamer Hall\n\n\nRunning time: 2 hours 20 minutes \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $75.00 – $131.00; Concession* $70.00 – $126.00\n\n*Concession prices apply to Pensioners\, Full-time students\, Unemployed and Children under the age of 18

SUMMARY:Australian Chamber Orchestra: The American
DESCRIPTION:In this rich tapestry of American music\, invention and reinvention are the warp and weft. \n\n\n\n\nThere is balm for the soul and invigorating jolts of energy to raise the spirits high. This concert opens with ‘Rising Sun Blues’\, an English folksong imported to the American South. Its enduring influence can be traced as a thread through American culture ever since. George Walker pays lyrical tribute to his grandmother\, a former slave\, in his 1946 work Lyric for Strings\, while Florence Price refracts the Black folkloric tradition through the prism of Western string playing in her Negro Folksongs in Counterpoint. \nMusic by contemporary giants Morton Feldman\, Bryce Dessner and John Adams continue the work of remaking and revitalisation\, culminating in the world premiere of a new work for electric violin and strings by American composer Samuel Adams for Richard Tognetti and the Orchestra. The concert reaches a peak with Tognetti’s string orchestra arrangement of Dvořák’s sublime American Quartet\, written during a rural holiday in America in 1893. Fresh\, optimistic and full of rustic charm\, this is music to warm the soul. \n\n\n\n\nSunday 20 Nov 2:30 PM; Arts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\n\nRunning TimeApproximately 2 hours (including interval) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $49.00 – $152.00; Concession $49.00 – $132.00\n\n\nUnder 30 $49.00; Student $25.00; Group 8+ $39.20 – $121.60

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra presents James Ehnes: Beethoven's Violin Concerto
DESCRIPTION:The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra takes the lead in a program of bold Hungarian repertoire\, followed by Beethoven’s Violin Concerto directed and performed by James Ehnes. \n\n\n\n\nGyörgy Ligeti arranged Six Bagatelles for wind quintet from a cycle of piano pieces he had written years previously\, Musica ricercata. Ten members of the MSO woodwind section will perform these vivacious and intricate vignettes to open the program. \nThen\, the strings of the MSO take to the stage for Bartók’s Divertimento. Heavily influenced by the rhythms and tonalities of Eastern European folk music\, Bartók composed the work in a Swiss Alps chalet owned by the commissioner of the work. \nBeethoven’s Violin Concerto was composed for prodigy Franz Clement. The concerto did not immediately catch on with audiences; it wasn’t until forty years later\, when thirteen-year-old Joseph Joachim performed the piece under the baton of Felix Mendelssohn\, that it entered the standard repertoire. \n\n\n\n\nThursday 17 Nov 7:30 PM; Saturday 19 Nov 7:30 PM; Arts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour 45 minutes (inc. 1 x 20 minute interval) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets: Thursday 17 November: Standard $75.00 – $146.00;  Concession*$70.00 – $141.00 \nSaturday 19 November: Standard $69.00 – $124.00; Concession* $64.00 – $119.00

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra presents Quick Fix at Half Six: Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Experience the power and grandeur of Ludwig van Beethoven at the height of his powers\, alongside the Australian premiere of a bold new work by Brett Dean – inspired by Beethoven’s own piano concertos. \n\n\n\n\nOver five years\, Biss co-commissioned five composers to produce their own piano concertos in response to Beethoven’s contributions to the genre. Brett Dean’s atmospheric Gneixendorf Music\, a Winter’s Journey was informed by a summer spent in the small Austrian village where Beethoven resided for a few months towards the end of his life. \nSymphony No.5 opens with the most famous ‘da da da duumm!’ in history. But there is more to this piece than its impactful beginning: Beethoven takes a number of simple themes and expertly weaves them into a layered musical texture\, all while building a sense of dramatic urgency. \n\n\n\n\nMonday 7 Nov\, 6:30 PM; Running Time1 hour\n\n\nPrice range\n\n\n\nStandard: $55.00 – $95.00;  Concession* $50.00 – $90.00\n\n*Concession prices apply to Pensioners\, Full-time students\, Unemployed and Children under the age of 18 \nDynamic pricing applies to this event. Ticket prices may be dynamically adjusted\, either up or down\, based on real-time market demand and without notice.

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Verdi's Requiem
DESCRIPTION:The MSO is joined by four masterful soloists and the 120-strong MSO Chorus to bring a truly momentous work to life: Verdi’s Requiem. \n\n\n\n\nVerdi felt compelled to start a Requiem after the passing of fellow composer and cultural icon Gioachino Rossini. After a five-year delay\, Verdi returned to the project after the death of revered Italian author Alessandro Manzoni. A fervent admirer of Manzoni and his works\, Verdi dedicated his Requiem to the writer’s memory. \nAs you would expect from one of the greatest operatic composers of all time\, the Requiem packs a dramatic punch\, moving from thundering crescendos to moments of pious contemplation. Verdi wrote the piece with a concert hall setting in mind\, rather than the strictly observant surrounds of a church. \n\nArtists\n\n\n\n\nMelbourne Symphony Orchestra\n\n\n\nJaime Martín – Conductor\n\n\nMaija Kovalevska – Soprano\n\n\nCatherine Carby – Alto\n\n\nKang Wang – Tenor\n\n\nJonathan Lemalu – Bass\n\n\nMSO Chorus\nWarren Trevelyan-Jones – Chorus Master\n\n\nPerformance dates & times\n\n\n\nThursday 27 Oct 7:30 PM\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour 30 minutes

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Immortal Diamond - Paul Grabowsky and Lisa Gerrard
DESCRIPTION:A song that – in a sense – has no beginning and no end. \n\n\n\n\n“Immortal Diamond borrows its title from a poem of Gerard Manley Hopkins\, called That Nature is a Heraclitean Fire and the Comfort of Resurrection\, in which his unforgettable final lines describe his relationship to Christ: \nsince he was what I am\, and\nThis Jack\, joke\, poor potsherd\, patch\, matchwood\, immortal diamond\,\nIs immortal diamond \nThis beautiful poem\, full of extraordinary sound pictures\, provides the inspiration for a sound world in which Lisa Gerrard will range freely\, one that speaks of the power of spiritual love and renewal. The music will ebb and flow slowly like a tide\, the orchestra and sixteen wordless singers embedded within it will wrap around her voice\, occasionally falling away to the ruminations of the piano as it continues accompanying a song that – in a sense – has no beginning and no end.”\n– Paul Grabowsky AO \n\n\n\n\nWednesday 5 Oct\, 8:00 PM Arts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\n\n\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $55.00 – $95.00; Concession* $50.00 – $90.00\n\n\n*Concession prices apply to Pensioners\, Full-time students\, Health Care Cardholders and Children under the age of 18 \nDynamic pricing applies to this event. SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra presents Tchaikovsky's Pathétique
DESCRIPTION:The MSO uncovers the spaces between sonority and silence in this program\, directed by Alpesh Chauhan\, Associate Conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. \n\n\n\n\nAustralian composer Anna Cawrse describes The Rest is Silence as “a prayer\, a celebration\, and a meditation on the quiet still spaces\, the silence amidst the hustle\, and the enduring power of music”. This concerto features MSO Principal Cor Anglais Michael Pisani in an exploration of this remarkable instrument\, often used to express music’s most melancholic\, bittersweet\, and emotionally profound moments. \nTchaikovsky wrote that his Sixth Symphony was “the best thing I ever composed or shall compose” – a big claim from the man who wrote Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. This remarkable symphony is infinitely relatable\, exploring a struggle between the strength of life force\, and emotional and physical demise. In a break from standard practice of the time\, this incredible cornerstone of romantic repertoire ends in quiet\, contemplative dissolution

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Sibelius and Ravel
DESCRIPTION:The MSO is joined by internationally in-demand pianist Yeol Eum Son for a program featuring masterpieces from the early 20th century and an Australian premiere. \n\n\n\n\nThomas Adès’ Exterminating Angel Symphony brings together excerpts from his 2016 opera of the same name\, based on the 1962 film by surrealist filmmaker Luis Buñuel. Adès utilises the eerie voice of an ondes Martenot\, one of the earliest electronic instruments\, invented in 1928. \nRavel knew what he wanted to avoid in his Piano Concerto in G: drama for drama’s sake. “It has been said of certain classics that their concertos were written not ‘for’ but ‘against’ the piano. I heartily agree.” Ravel elegantly contrasts vibrant jazz-influenced passages with a sparse and heartfelt second movement. \nSibelius revised his Fifth Symphony twice after its 1915 premiere\, at a concert celebrating his fiftieth birthday. The final edit condensed the original first two movements into one. The finale features the achingly beautiful ‘swan hymn’ featuring striking intervals in the horns. \n\n\n\n\nThursday 25 Aug\, 7:30 PM;  Saturday 27 Aug\, 2:00 PM –  Hamer Hall\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour 40 minutes (inc. 1 x 20 minute interval) \n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\nThursday 25 August – Standard: $75.00 – $146.00; Concession*: $70.00 – $141.00 \nSaturday 27 August – Standard $69.00 – $129.00; Concession*: $64.00 – $124.00

SUMMARY:Australian Youth Orchestra's Return to the Stage
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate as AYO returns to the stage this July. \n\n\n\n\nThe Australian Youth Orchestra\, the pinnacle of musical excellence for young people across the nation\, returns to the stage this July with Richard Strauss’ heroic masterpiece\, An Alpine Symphony. Images of nature and rugged landscapes are beautifully depicted in this sonic portrait composed in 1915. \nThe Australian Youth Orchestra will also perform the spectacular overture of Hector Berlioz’s famous unfinished opera Les francs-juges. This seventy-minute program will be presented without an interval. \nTo celebrate AYO’s return to the stage\, all tickets are $25. \n40 years after his first collaboration with AYO at the 1982 Adelaide Festival\, legendary British conductor\, Sir Mark Elder CH CBE will lead this ensemble of the finest young musicians Australia has to offer. Currently the Music Director of the Hallé\, Sir Mark boasts an unparalleled resume\, having worked with most of the world’s leading orchestras\, and working regularly in the most prominent international opera houses. After three years of missed opportunities AYO cannot wait to be back on stage in what promises to be an immensely rewarding and inspiring experience. \nJoin AYO this July as Australia’s best young musical talent traverses through the mountains with Strauss’ impressive symphony\, under the baton of one of the greats.
