SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: An Evening of Fairy Tales
DESCRIPTION:Fantasy and wonder \n\n\n\n\nSince time immemorial\, fairy tales have been a source of fantasy and wonder for the world’s greatest composers. Let your imagination run free as magical music from the worlds of ballet and opera conjure up princes\, evil stepsisters and a fairy godmother. \nBased on folk tales by the Grimm Brothers\, Humperdinck began Hansel and Gretel as musical accompaniment to his sister’s Christmas songs\, yet his sketches turned into one of the most adored operas of all time. The Prelude references many of the opera’s musical themes\, including the famous ‘Evening Prayer’. \nProkofiev’s Cinderella captures the beloved fairy tale with joyous melodies\, lush harmonies\, and a feisty modernistic edge. A curated selection from this popular ballet takes you to the heart of the famous tale. \nTchaikovsky is the ultimate master of the musical fairy tale. A few weeks after the premiere of his second ballet\, The Sleeping Beauty\, Tchaikovsky wrote to a friend: “In view of the fact that you are pleased with all the music for The Sleeping Beauty\, what about making either one or even two suites from it?” Tchaikovsky’s idea proved a hit. The resulting Suite is a sublime distillation of Tchaikovsky’s tale of the beautiful Princess Aurora\, cursed into a hundred-year sleep by the evil fairy Carabosse. \n\n\n\nThursday 15 May 7:30 PM\n\n\nSaturday 17 May 7:30 PM\n\n\n Running Time 2 hours (including interval) \nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \nTICKETS: $20 – $139

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Jaime conducts Brahms and Ravel
DESCRIPTION:Melting lyricism and sensuous harmonies \n\n\n\n\nClimb to the peak of the violin repertoire with James Ehnes\, before celebrating Ravel’s 150th birth year with a rare performance of the full ballet score for Daphnis et Chloé. Musicians from ANAM join the MSO under the direction of Jaime Martín to perform some of the most arresting music ever written. \nBrahms’ Violin Concerto was written for the famed virtuoso Joseph Joachim\, who quickly declared it one of the four great German violin concertos. This concerto has something for everybody\, from the stately grandeur of the opening Allegro to the melting lyricism of the Adagio and the Gypsy-inspired flair of the Finale. It is the perfect way to showcase the brilliance of MSO Artist in Residence James Ehnes. \nRavel’s Daphnis et Chloé is an extraordinary vision of what the composer called ‘the Greece of my dreams’. Commissioned by the revered choreographer Serge Diaghilev\, Daphnis et Chloé was considered by Ravel to be a ‘choreographic symphony’ in three acts for orchestra and wordless chorus. The story of the two lovers is brought to life by some of Ravel’s most gorgeous melodies and sensuous Impressionistic harmonies. Experience Ravel’s masterpiece in its sublime original form. \n\nThursday 10 April 7:30 PM\n\n\nSaturday 12 April 7:30 PM\n\n\nRunning Time2 hours (including interval) \nHamer Hall \n$20 – $139

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: American Stories: Bernstein\, Gershwin and more
DESCRIPTION:This performance of musical tales includes Australian composer Joe Chindamo’s unique concerto for trombone\, brought to life by Jonathon Ramsay. \n\n\n\n\nFavourites from American composers Barber\, Bernstein and Gershwin will put a spring in your step with their vivid dance rhythms in full orchestral glory. \nDiscover your deceptive side with Barber’s thriller-esque overture to Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s 18th century play The School for Scandal. \nJonathon Ramsay – currently Principal Trombone at the Berlin Philharmonic – performs Joe Chindamo’s Ligeia. Based on the short story by Edgar Allan Poe\, Chindamo explores psychological duality in this wildly virtuosic meditation on the macabre. \nBased on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and adapted by Stephen Sondheim\, Bernstein’s score to West Side Story is hailed as one of the most brilliant achievements in musical theatre history. His suite of Symphonic Dances is an orchestral romp through some of the most dynamic and moving themes\, including Somewhere and Maria. \nYou might be familiar with the movie-musical An American in Paris starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron\, or perhaps you saw the production that recently swept the Tonys on Broadway. It was this orchestral work by Gershwin – written more \nthan 20 years before the musical – that inspired Hollywood producers and prompted the development of a blockbuster. \n\nThursday 11 Apr\, 7:30 PM;  Saturday 13 Apr\, 2:00 PM\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour 40 minutes (including interval) \nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \nTICKETS: $75 – $139

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Ryman Healthcare Season Opening Gala: Jaime conducts The Planets
DESCRIPTION:Join the MSO and Jaime Martín for two of the most emotionally-stirring works of all time. \n\n\n\n\nAlban Gerhardt brings intense musicality to perform Elgar’s ravishing Cello Concerto\, and Gustav Holst’s magnificent The Planets gets a new celestial addition. \nElgar composed his Cello Concerto in the aftermath of the First World War. This extraordinary piece – at once emotionally reserved and overflowing in its lyrical expansiveness – has become a cornerstone of 20th century music. \nWhile Elgar was writing his Cello Concerto\, Gustav Holst sat elsewhere in England pondering the mysteries of the solar system. The resulting suite – The Planets – takes us on an otherworldly journey among these heavenly bodies\, exploring each in the context of their corresponding Greek and Roman Gods. Perhaps the best known of these – Jupiter – has since become the melody to English anthem ‘I vow to Thee\, My Country’. \nA newly-commissioned work by Yorta Yorta composer Deborah Cheetham Fraillon AO completes the picture – a First Nations perspective on Earth to join its siblings among the stars. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 21 March 7:30 PM; Saturday 23 March 7:30 PM  – Running Time 2 Hours (with interval)\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\nTICKETS: $86 – $147

DESCRIPTION:In 1982\, the Australian cinema landscape changed forever ‘The Man from Snowy River’ captured the hearts of the nation and the world. \n\n\n\n\nIn celebration of its 40th anniversary year\, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra will perform the award-winning score by Bruce Rowland live to screen for the World Premiere of this iconic film in concert\, under the baton of Vanessa Scammell. \nJoining in the celebrations will be the original stars of the film Sigrid Thornton and Tom Burlinson\, who at each performance will give audiences some insight into the making of the film and discuss why it still remains so close to their hearts. \nInspired by the Banjo Patterson poem\, The Man from Snowy River tells the exhilarating tale of Jim Craig\, an 18-year-old who\, after losing his father\, must prove himself in the harsh high country and win the respect of the rugged mountain men.
