SUMMARY:The Melbourne Conservatorium of Music: Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:The University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra opens their 2025 concert season with two spectacular Hungarian works. \n\n\n\n\nZoltán Kodály spent seven years of his childhood in Galánta where he heard small bands playing folk music at army recruitment events. These performances — consisting of alternating slow and then very fast dances — were designed to enthuse the listener to join in the fun…and enlist! Kodaly’s Dances of Galánta is full of traditional Hungarian folk dances\, written in this verbunkos (recruiting) style. \nThe concert will end with one of the 20th century’s orchestral masterpieces: Béla Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra. This is perhaps the most accessible of Bartok’s works and\, as the title suggests\, displays virtuosic parts for every section of the orchestra. Eastern European folk tunes feature throughout\, as well as comic interludes and the most frenzied of orchestral-repertoire finales. \nJust before the interval\, the Orchestra will be joined by Joshua Jones (winner of the 2023 Conservatorium’s Concerto/Aria competition)\, to perform Dmitri Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No 1. \n\n\n\nSunday 30 March 5:00 PM\n\n\n Running Time 1 hour 45 minutes (including 20 min interval) \nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \nTICKETS: Free \n

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Ryman Healthcare Season Opening Gala: Mahler's Resurrection Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Season 2025 opens with one of the greatest symphonies ever written: Mahler’s monumental Symphony No.2. \n\n\n\n\nWhen he started writing in 1888\, the then-28-year-old Mahler faced a series of intense existential questions. “Why have you lived? Why have you suffered? Is it all some huge\, awful joke? We have to answer these questions somehow if we are to go on living – indeed\, even if we are only to go on dying!” \nBelieving in the symphony’s potential to embody an entire world\, Mahler explored these questions in a thrilling work featuring a vast orchestra alongside chorus and soloists. \nIn the expansive first movement\, Mahler comes head to head with death in a furious funeral march\, while a lilting folk dance and searching scenes of nostalgia and mourning comprise the following three movements. An epic choral finale culminates in a transcendent\, life-affirming conclusion – recently featured in Bradley Cooper’s popular film Maestro. \nThe Resurrection Symphony is a breath-taking hymn to redemption\, the afterlife and the resilience of the human spirit. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear Mahler’s masterpiece under the charismatic direction of MSO’s Chief Conductor Jaime Martín. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMSO – Jaime Martín Conductor\n\n\nEleanor Lyons Soprano\n\n\nCatriona Morison Mezzo-soprano\n\n\nMSO Chorus – Warren Trevelyan-Jones Chorus director\n\n\n\n27 February 7.30 and 1 March 7.30\n\n\n\n\nHamer Hall \nTICKETS: $68.85 – $93
