SUMMARY:Australian Chamber Orchestra: ACO Unleashed
DESCRIPTION:ACO Unleashed is a thrilling celebration of the ACO at 50 — bold\, virtuosic and electrifying. \n\n\n\n\nCurated by Artistic Director Richard Tognetti\, this dynamic program showcases the extraordinary talent of ACO principals Helena Rathbone\, Satu Vänskä\, and Timo-Veikko Valve\, joined by the Orchestra’s newest member\, violinist Anna da Silva Chen. \nThe concert features classics by Bach\, Beethoven\, Schubert and Ravel\, alongside a deeply moving work by Finnish master Jaakko Kuusisto — all affirming the ACO’s “unwavering energy and maverick imagination” (The Times\, UK). \nNo celebration of the ACO would be complete without Bach. The concert begins with his Concerto for Three Violins in D Major\, featuring Helena Rathbone\, Satu Vänskä and Anna da Silva Chen in a radiant and intricate showcase. \nRavel’s Tzigane follows — fiery and virtuosic — led by Satu Vänskä\, in a performance that promises drama and exhilaration. \nBeethoven’s Serioso Quartet\, arranged for string orchestra by Richard Tognetti\, intensifies the original’s turbulence and brilliance\, while Schubert’s Quartettsatz offers a glimpse of his profound emotional range in just one movement. \nThe concert concludes with the Australian premiere of Jaakko Kuusisto’s Cello Concerto\, performed by Timo-Veikko Valve. Deeply personal and hauntingly beautiful\, it is Kuusisto’s final orchestral work — imbued with emotional resonance and tribute. A powerful finale to a concert that celebrates the ACO’s artistry at its most compelling. \n\n\n\n\nSunday 22 June 2:30 PM\n\n\nMonday 23 Jun 7:30 PM\n\n\n Running Time 2 hours (including interval) \nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard from $49.00; Concession from $49.00\n\n\nUnder 35 $35.00; Student $30.00; Group 8+ from $60.00\n\nConcession applies to Veterans’ Affairs pensioners\, Centrelink-issued Pension and Commonwealth Healthcare cardholders. SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: A Reflection in Time
DESCRIPTION:Symphonic powerhouses\nThe twentieth century produced some of the most passionate and dramatic music ever written. MSO Principal Conductor Benjamin Northey joins forces with Australian violin wunderkind Christian Li to deliver this riveting program of symphonic powerhouses. \n\nSamuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings\, the composer’s best-known work\, is perhaps the ultimate tearjerker. With its sensitively drawn melodies and hauntingly ethereal sound\, the Adagio is the epitome of sorrow\, tenderness and comfort.\nIn 1945\, Austrian-born composer Erich Korngold was the most celebrated Hollywood film composer alive. But having grown up composing in the concert halls of Europe\, he yearned to return to his roots. Korngold’s resulting Violin Concerto won instant acclaim for its lush harmonies and memorable melodies drawn from his movie scores written in the 1930s.\nShostakovich composed his scintillating Fifth Symphony as a musical apology to Stalin after being denounced by the dictator. While Shostakovich scored top marks for seemingly embracing Soviet ideals\, Symphony No.5 is\, in fact\, an enigmatic work laden with irony\, musical code and resistance. It remains one of the composer’s most popular works due to its power and depth.\n\nDuration: approx. 1 hour and 50 minutes including interval \nMelbourne Symphony Orchestra\nBenjamin Northey conductor\nChristian Li* violin \n*MSO Young Artist in Association \nBarber Adagio for Strings\nKorngold Violin Concerto\nShostakovich Symphony No.5 \nThursday 12 June 2025 7:30pm at Hamer Hall\nFriday 13 June 2025 7:30pm at Hamer Hall Relaxed performance\nSaturday 14 June 2025 7:30pm at Hamer Hall\nTICKETS: Standard $75-$139; Concession $70-$134; Child (under 18) $20 \nRelaxed Performance: General Admission\n$35 Standard / $30 Concession
