SUMMARY:Melbourne Conservatorium of Music: Leningrad Symphony
DESCRIPTION:The University of Melbourne presents their last concert of 2025. \n\n\n\n\nDuring World War II\, the siege of Leningrad lasted 872 days and claimed over a million lives — most from starvation and cold. In response to the unimaginable suffering around him\, Dmitri Shostakovich began composing his Leningrad Symphony while still living in the city. \nShostakovich was later airlifted out for the premiere in March 1942\, before the microfilmed score made its way via Tehran and Cairo to London. There\, Sir Henry Wood conducted its first Western performance\, followed soon after by Arturo Toscanini in New York. With its terrifying invasion theme and elegiac undertones\, the symphony became a global symbol of resilience and defiance in the face of Nazi aggression. \nThis concert will begin with Arvo Pärt’s Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten — a moving tribute from one composer to another. The Orchestra will then welcome soprano Ruth Blythman\, winner of the 2024 Conservatorium Solo Artist Competition\, for a performance of Strauss’s Four Last Songs — a hauntingly beautiful meditation on death\, written shortly before Strauss’s own passing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday 28 September 5:00 PM\n\n\nRunning TimeApprox. 130 minutes including a 20-minute interval \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFREE – Bookings required

Under the direction of Artistic Director Richard Tognetti\, they take audiences on an adventure to create truly transformative experiences. \nDirected by ACO Principal Cello Timo-Veikko Valve\, the Orchestra will be joined by friend and recorder virtuoso Genevieve Lacey\, whose mastery of this most elemental of instruments is unsurpassed. \nMusic is visceral and vital. The Australian Chamber Orchestra will explore the different ways music can heal\, culminating in Beethoven’s Holy Song of Thanksgiving\, composed after his recovery from a life-threatening illness. Beethoven was forever facing down adversity with music\, and this heartfelt masterpiece is filled with quiet joy and a deep gratitude for life.v \nMax Richter wrote his intimate On the Nature of Daylight after witnessing the suffering of the Iraq war\, and its beauty has resonated with filmmakers and fans as an antidote to tragedy. \nThe ACO premiere a new work from Pulitzer-prize winning composer David Lang\, and enter Pēteris Vasks’ tranquil sound world with the lush warmth of Musica Serena. From a millennium earlier\, abbess Hildegard’s sublime songs speak directly to the human soul. These holy reflections broke musical barriers then\, and remain potent today. \nMelody Eötvös’ Meraki embodies its title\, a Greek word which means to create with soul or love. And that is what music is all about. \nThis concert is for everyone and anyone who wants to experience healing\, renewal or invigoration. \n\n\n\n\nSunday 7 September 2:30 PM\n\nRunning Time Approximately 2 hours (including interval) \nHamer Hall \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $49.00 – $141.00; Concession $49.00 – $113.00\n\n\nUnder 35 $35.00; Student $30.00; Group 8+ $60.00 – $112.00\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Australian World Orchestra: Mahlerfest | Mahler 4 & 5
DESCRIPTION:The Australian World Orchestra returns in 2025 for Mahlerfest | Mahler 4 & 5\, conducted by Alexander Briger — a gala night presenting Mahler’s matchless symphonies back-to-back in one epic concert. \n\n\n\n\nExperience the radiant melodies of Mahler’s Symphony No. 4\, with its delicate orchestration and subtle hints of unease\, followed by the rich contrasts of Symphony No. 5 — a journey from darker tones to moments of calm\, including the famous Adagietto. \nMahlerfest | Mahler 4 & 5 offers a powerful progression from innocence to experience\, as these vital works move from memoir to poem and ultimately culminate in a tribute to Alma — the woman who would later become Mahler’s wife. The concert will showcase the immense skill of Australia’s only national orchestra — featuring accomplished musicians from both local and international ensembles\, and led by the Australian World Orchestra’s artistic director\, Alexander Briger. \nWitness some of Australia’s finest musicians come together for this special event — a 2025 calendar highlight not to be missed. \nWednesday 3 Sep 7:30 PM     Running Time 2 hours 30 minutes \nHamer Hall \nTICKETS: $69.00 – $239.00

SUMMARY:The Melbourne Conservatorium of Music: Pictures at an Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Three vibrant\, and evocatively descriptive works will be performed as part of The University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra concert this August. \n\n\n\n\nThe first half invites you to journey across the sea through the eyes of two great composers. In  Peter Grimes\, Benjamin Britten conjures dark and brooding seascapes — from the pale hush of  Dawn and the bustling life of a Sunday Morning market\, to the shimmering calm of Moonlight and the fury of the Storm. \nWhile Britten uses the sea as a backdrop to his opera’s characters\, Claude Debussy treats the sea as the central protagonist in La Mer. You’ll hear whispers and roars\, a conversation with the sea and the wind\, the rise and fall of waves and the weight and wonder of water. Both works shimmer with musical onomatopoeia — painting the sea in sound. \nThe second half offers a different kind of description — this time\, a promenade through an art gallery. Originally written for piano\, Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition was later orchestrated by Ravel into one of the most beloved treasures of the concert hall. \n\n\n\n\nSunday 31 August 5:00 PM\n\n\n Running Time 97 minutes\, including a 20 min interval (after La Mer) \n\n\n\n\n\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\nFREE\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Australian Chamber Orchestra: Gershwin & Shostakovich
DESCRIPTION:A celebration of the power of music featuring Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No.1 with superstar pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk. \n\n\n\n\nThe Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO) is celebrating fifty years in 2025 and is one of the most acclaimed chamber orchestras in the world\, renowned for their inspired programming\, unrivalled virtuosity\, energy and individuality. Under the direction of Artistic Director Richard Tognetti\, they take audiences on an adventure to create truly transformative experiences. \nMusic is a powerful defence against darkness. Throughout history\, composers have responded to adversity time and time again by creating music full of hope. \nRichard Tognetti directs this profound program that features Ukrainian-born\, internationally renowned pianist\, Alexander Gavrylyuk. Gavrylyuk makes his ACO debut with Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Shostakovich’s witty\, irreverent Piano Concerto No.1\, with David Elton on trumpet. \nGershwin’s much-loved Rhapsody in Blue is a life-affirming explosion of jazz and joy\, an exultant celebration of difference and dynamism. It’s a stark contrast to Shostakovich’s intense and emotional Chamber Symphony\, dedicated to the victims of fascism and oppression. It tells a story of fear and melancholy but never loses hope. \nIn response\, the ACO have commissioned a new work from Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov\, known for his lyrical\, introspective and consoling style which he shares with his friend Arvo Pärt. This is a special piece\, in which the composer wrote while sheltering from war after escaping his native Kyiv. \nThis is music that stands with victims of injustice. It lights the darkness and celebrates human ingenuity and courage. \n\n\n\nSunday 10 August 2:30 PM\n\n\nMonday 11 August 7:30 PM\n\n\n Running Time Approximately 2 hours (including interval) \nHamer Hall \n\nTICKETS: Standard $59.00 – $167.00; Concession $59.00 – $145.00\n\n\nUnder 35 $35.00; Student $30.00; Group 8+ $86.00 – $134.00
