SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: A Snapshot in Time: Elgar's Cello Concerto
DESCRIPTION:Travel back in time for this snapshot of Europe in 1918-1919\, when manifold compositional lineages collided with the life-changing events of the First World War. \n\n\n\n\nLili Boulanger was a child prodigy\, daughter of a Russian princess\, and the first woman to win the prestigious Prix de Rome composition prize. Her evocative and richly textured works D’un matin de printemps (Of a Spring Morning) and D’un soir triste (Of a Sad Evening) were written in 1918\, just before her death at only 24 and speak to genuinely thrilling musical genius cut tragically short. \nGet your tissues at the ready and join internationally-acclaimed Australian cellist Li-Wei Qin for one of the most divine\, lyrical\, and emotionally-stirring works of the 20th century – Elgar’s beloved Cello Concerto. \nBased on a commedia dell’arte play\, this suite from Prokofiev’s vibrant comic opera Love for Three Oranges is absurd escapism at its most playful\, inspired by Prokofiev’s courtship with wartime America. \nFrench impressionist Ravel’s La Valse musically plots the birth\, rise\, and decline of the Viennese waltz. Journeying from joyful buoyancy to chaotic and crazed destruction\, La Valse has often been interpreted as an allegory of Europe before\, during\, and in the direct aftermath of WWI. \n\n\n\n\nThursday 1 Jun 7:30 PM; Saturday 3 Jun\, 7:30 PM   Running Time 2 hours\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: \nThursday 1 June: Standard $75.00 – $135.00; Concession $70.00 – $130.00* \n\n\nSaturday 3 June: Standard $69.00 – $126.00; Concession $64.00 – $121.00*

SUMMARY:London Symphony Orchestra: Adams\, Debussy and Ravel
DESCRIPTION:Ever since Pierre Monteux was principal conductor in the 60s\, French music has been part of the London Symphony Orchestra’s DNA. \n\n\n\n\n‘It’s hilarious\,’ says Sir Simon Rattle\, that a London group should be ‘one of the great French orchestras.’ Sir Simon himself is known as a conductor of orchestrally colourful repertoire\, and this program brings together three signature favourites that show this to perfection. \nJohn Adams’ Harmonielehre calls for more than a hundred musicians – the kind of piece that’s normally too big for orchestras to tour. But the LSO is bringing 114 musicians to Melbourne\, making it possible to hear them in this American marriage of harmonic richness and rhythmic momentum. Inspired by a surreal dream of a tanker ship taking off like a rocket\, the mesmerising Harmonielehre at first launches a visceral\, rhythmic assault before inviting us into a mysterious musical world of glittering intrigue and exquisite beauty entirely unlike any other. \nDebussy and Ravel will highlight the LSO’s ‘special sense of colour and ability to play quietly and delicately’. From Debussy’s enthralling sketches of the sea to the voluptuous and sensual take on Greek mythology in Ravel’s ballet suite\, the second half will fill Hamer Hall – and your soul – with the vibrant and glittering sounds of the 20th century. \n\n\n\n\nFriday 5 May 7:30 PM; Arts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\nRunning Time1 hours 45 minutes (including 20 minute interval) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard: $181.00 – $299.00; Concession: $176.00 – $294.00*

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra presents Season Finale Gala: Boléro!
DESCRIPTION:Be transported to the landscape of Spain with vivacious and colourful works from Ravel\, Rodrigo and de Falla. \n\n\n\n\nMaurice Ravel had a lifelong affinity for Spanish culture and music; his mother hailed from Basque Country straddling the border of France and Spain. Rapsodie Espagnole was Ravel’s first composition for orchestra. A mysterious\, intoxicating four-note motif dominates the opening\, followed by two passages inspired by dance forms and a festive conclusion. \nClassical and folk traditions converge in Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez\, featuring “the soul of the Spanish guitar” Pablo Sáinz-Villegas. Proving that inspiration can strike anywhere\, the melody for the seductive second movement of this work came to Rodrigo whilst he was waiting for a tram! \nde Falla’s Three Cornered Hat began life as the accompanying music of a pantomime play. At the encouragement of Serge Diagilev of the Ballet Russes\, de Falla expanded the score into a full ballet. The two orchestral suites string together vignettes from the completed ballet in the original order. \nBoléro is one of the most famous pieces in the orchestral repertoire. Ravel gradually builds a crescendo over fifteen minutes\, floating winding melodies over a persistent snare drum. \n*Please note: de Falla’s El Amor Brujo will no longer be performed as part of this program. \n\n\n\n\nFriday 11 Nov 7:30 PM; Saturday 12 Nov 7:30 PM\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour 45 minutes (including interval) \n\n\n\n\n\nPrice range\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $75.00 – $131.00; Concession* $70.00 – $126.00\n\n*Concession prices apply to Pensioners\, Full-time students\, Unemployed and Children under the age of 18 \nDynamic pricing applies to this event. SUMMARY:Opera Australia: Mefistofele in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Come dance with the devil in this garden of demonic delights. \n\n\n\n\nMefistofele has made a bargain with God that he does not intend to lose: he can win Faust’s soul for himself. Disillusioned with his own life\, Faust makes his famous pact\, and embarks on a journey through life’s wildest pleasures with the devil himself. But it’s not just Faust’s soul that hangs in the balance … and this bargain has some unexpected losers. \nRenowned for his work as a librettist for Verdi\, Boito left only one complete opera: Mefistofele. It is a distinctive\, lush work\, full of stunning choral pieces\, magnificent orchestration and one of the great bass-baritone roles. \nFerruccio Furlanetto incarnates the devil himself\, Mefistofele. Leah Crocetto soars as the beautiful Margherita and Diego Torre gives us Faust at his most disillusioned. \nHear the Opera Australia Chorus in all its glory celebrating both the sacred and profane\, and the magnificent sound of Orchestra Victoria in this rare concert performance of Boito’s work. \nSensational young maestro Andrea Battistoni conducts. \nPerformance dates & times\n\n\n\nWednesday 25 May 7:00 PM\n\n\nFriday 27 May 7:00 PM\n\n\nRunning TimeApproximately 2 hours and 40 minutes (including one interval) \n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\nStandard $59.00 – $195.00\n\n\nChild $30.00 – $98.00\n\n\nPensioner $53.00 – $176.00\n\n\nStudent $53.00 – $176.00\n\n\nGroups 8+ $50.00 – $166.00

SUMMARY:Zelman Symphony Orchestra: Babi Yar
DESCRIPTION:Experience the delights of the Elena Kats-Chernin Flute Concerto and Shostakovich’s darkly evocative Symphony No.13\, Babi Yar. \nYevgeny Yevtushenko’s famous poem\, Babi Yar\, exposed the massacres by the Nazis of over 110\,000 people at Babi Yar\, near Kiev\, during WWII. It denounced anti-Semitism and protested against the then Soviet Government’s refusal to build a memorial. Dmitri Shostakovich set this poem to music in his 13th Symphony\, Babi Yar\, which will be performed by bass-baritone Adrian Tamburini accompanied by a large orchestra and a 200-voice male chorus. It will be the centrepiece of this concert commemorating the 75th anniversary of these horrendous events at Babi Yar. \nThe strongly emotive yet delightfully melodic Elena Kats-Chernin Flute Concerto\, Night and Now\, references Elena’s early years in Soviet-era Russia. It was composed for leading Australian flautist Sally Walker\, and premiered in Victoria by Zelman Symphony to great acclaim in 2015. Zelman Symphony is proud to be able to bring this beautiful work to the Hamer Hall stage.
