SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Mozart's Final Symphonies
DESCRIPTION:Join MSO and Chief Conductor Jaime Martín for this deep dive into Mozart’s enigmatic and radical final symphonies. \n\n\n\n\nThere is a certain air of romantic mystery around the composition and first performances of Mozart’s final three symphonies\, all written together in the summer of 1788\, when the composer was 32. After enjoying several years of prominence and celebrity in Vienna\, Mozart’s career suddenly lost momentum when Vienna declared war on Turkey earlier that year\, and to complicate matters further\, he was in significant debt. These three symphonies were to be his last symphonic works before the early\, tragic death of classical music’s boy genius. \n\nThursday 23 Nov\, 7:30 PM;    Friday 24 Nov\, 7:30 PM Running Time 2 hours 15 minutes\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\nTICKETS: $69 – $135

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Eumeralla\, A War Requiem For Peace
DESCRIPTION:“One day I hope to walk on that country and feel no restless spirit – just the strength of two thousand generations of lives lived and culture sustained.” \n\n\n\n\nSouthwest of Melbourne lies a battleground\, haunted with the memory of war and loss. The scars of the Eumeralla Resistance War (1840 – 1863) lie heavily upon the country. \n“I first walked on this battlefield in 2013. The voices of those lost were so loud that it woke something in me and my immediate response was music. A song. A Requiem. A War Requiem\, named in honour of one of the most brutal resistance wars fought on this continent.” \nEumeralla\, a war Requiem for peace brings into focus a period of Australia’s history that is yet to be fully understood. Written and composed by acclaimed Yorta Yorta soprano\, composer and Artistic Director of Short Black Opera\, Deborah Cheetham AO\, this requiem for peace\, will be sung entirely in the ancient dialects of the Gunditjmara people. \n“It is my hope that this requiem will help the spirits of those who fell to find a lasting peace and that we\, their descendants\, might find our way to deeper understanding of the legacy of these battles.” \n“Eumeralla\, a war requiem for peace will break the silence of so many decades and serve to amplify the importance of our nation’s shared history.” – Deborah Cheetham AO \n\nSaturday 14 Oct 7:30 PM         Running Time1 hour 15 minutes\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\nTICKETS: $55 – $97

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Schumann and Mendelssohn - Abundant Spring
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the arrival of Spring with American superstar violinist Esther Yoo under the baton of MSO Principal Guest Conductor Xian Zhang. \n\n\n\n\nThis program evokes the abundance of springtime – featuring new beginnings\, new life\, and a new work by Cybec Young Composer in Residence Melissa Douglas. \nSchumann wrote his Spring Symphony during the depths of a dark German winter as a pastoral homage to different aspects of the season. We hear its wondrous emergence out of snowy bleakness\, the special atmosphere of a springtime evening\, ‘merry playmates’\, and nature in full bloom at the height of its glory. \nKnown for her expressive\, atmospheric ability to transport the listener to other worlds\, young Australian composer Melissa Douglas’s music has been performed across the world by the BBC Singers\, PLEXUS\, and Polaris Duo to name a few. \nAt the time of its composition\, Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto was considered an innovative reinvention of the genre in the way it foregrounded the solo violin. Esther Yoo makes her mark on this sparkling\, turbulent\, and floridly virtuosic work – described in 1906 by violinist Joseph Joachim as ‘the heart’s jewel’ of violin concertos. \n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 7 Sep 7:30 PM      Running Time 2 hours (including 20 minute interval)\n\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \nTICKETS: $75 – $135

SUMMARY:Australian Chamber Orchestra: Dvořák's Serenade
DESCRIPTION:Give yourself over to this spirited journey featuring the sublime and visceral music of Dvořák and Bartók. \n\n\n\n\nBohemianism is both an idea and an ideal. It stands for unconventionality and the artistic life. At the same time\, it’s nostalgic for the smell of the earth. It craves something real and true. \nWho better than the Australian Chamber Orchestra to lead you on this journey? \nBartók’s passion for the folk music of his native Hungary is visceral. The themes and rhythms from the rural past infuse his Fifth String Quartet with sinew and bite in a new arrangement for string orchestra. Dvořák’s sublime Serenade\, one of the most loved pieces of music for string orchestra\, summons the feeling of warm sun on your back and the wistful remembrance of other times and places. \nBartók and Dvořák are in fine company with the Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Caroline Shaw. Like Dvořák\, a love of dance permeates her music\, with the dizzying range of her many artistic collaborations animating every bar. \n\n\n\n\nSunday 13 Aug\, 2:30 PM; Monday 14 Aug\, 7:30 PM\nRunning Time1 hour 40 minutes (including 20 minute interval)\n\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $49.00 – $139.00; Concession* $49.00 – $129.00; Under 35 (A – D Reserve) $35.00\n\n\nStudent (B – D Reserve) $25.00

Under the baton of Jaime Martín\, the MSO is joined by the monumental forces of the MSO Chorus and 2023 Ensemble in Residence Gondwana Voices. \n\n\n\n\nDaughter of a Russian princess\, Lili Boulanger grew up in a claustrophobic world of expectation with music serving as her great escape. Psalm 129 begins with the text ‘they have oppressed me since my youth’ – a statement with great autobiographical resonances for this extraordinary composer. \nAustralian Brett Dean’s ‘social cantata’ Vexations and Devotions has been described as reflecting the ‘de-humanisation of contemporary life as exemplified by reality television\, automated answering services and meaningless corporate jargon’ (The Australian). With text by Michael Leunig and Dorothy Porter\, this performance of Dean’s playful and philosophical work features youth choir Gondwana Voices\, MSO 2023 Ensemble in Residence. \nFrench composer Berlioz’s epic Symphonie Fantastique is a prime example of programmatic music – that is\, music with a clear story that the music seeks to evoke. It follows the protagonist’s melodious\, energetically-heaving\, and sometimes horrifying fever dream of love\, death\, and the supernatural. \n\n\n\n\nFriday 14 Jul\, 7:30 PM;  Saturday 15 Jul\, 7:30 PM    Running Time 2 hours 10 minutes\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $69.00 – $121.00\, Concession $64.00 – $116.00*

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: A Snapshot in Time: Elgar's Cello Concerto
DESCRIPTION:Travel back in time for this snapshot of Europe in 1918-1919\, when manifold compositional lineages collided with the life-changing events of the First World War. \n\n\n\n\nLili Boulanger was a child prodigy\, daughter of a Russian princess\, and the first woman to win the prestigious Prix de Rome composition prize. Her evocative and richly textured works D’un matin de printemps (Of a Spring Morning) and D’un soir triste (Of a Sad Evening) were written in 1918\, just before her death at only 24 and speak to genuinely thrilling musical genius cut tragically short. \nGet your tissues at the ready and join internationally-acclaimed Australian cellist Li-Wei Qin for one of the most divine\, lyrical\, and emotionally-stirring works of the 20th century – Elgar’s beloved Cello Concerto. \nBased on a commedia dell’arte play\, this suite from Prokofiev’s vibrant comic opera Love for Three Oranges is absurd escapism at its most playful\, inspired by Prokofiev’s courtship with wartime America. \nFrench impressionist Ravel’s La Valse musically plots the birth\, rise\, and decline of the Viennese waltz. Journeying from joyful buoyancy to chaotic and crazed destruction\, La Valse has often been interpreted as an allegory of Europe before\, during\, and in the direct aftermath of WWI. \n\n\n\n\nThursday 1 Jun 7:30 PM; Saturday 3 Jun\, 7:30 PM   Running Time 2 hours\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: \nThursday 1 June: Standard $75.00 – $135.00; Concession $70.00 – $130.00* \n\n\nSaturday 3 June: Standard $69.00 – $126.00; Concession $64.00 – $121.00*

SUMMARY:London Symphony Orchestra: Adams\, Debussy and Ravel
DESCRIPTION:Ever since Pierre Monteux was principal conductor in the 60s\, French music has been part of the London Symphony Orchestra’s DNA. \n\n\n\n\n‘It’s hilarious\,’ says Sir Simon Rattle\, that a London group should be ‘one of the great French orchestras.’ Sir Simon himself is known as a conductor of orchestrally colourful repertoire\, and this program brings together three signature favourites that show this to perfection. \nJohn Adams’ Harmonielehre calls for more than a hundred musicians – the kind of piece that’s normally too big for orchestras to tour. But the LSO is bringing 114 musicians to Melbourne\, making it possible to hear them in this American marriage of harmonic richness and rhythmic momentum. Inspired by a surreal dream of a tanker ship taking off like a rocket\, the mesmerising Harmonielehre at first launches a visceral\, rhythmic assault before inviting us into a mysterious musical world of glittering intrigue and exquisite beauty entirely unlike any other. \nDebussy and Ravel will highlight the LSO’s ‘special sense of colour and ability to play quietly and delicately’. From Debussy’s enthralling sketches of the sea to the voluptuous and sensual take on Greek mythology in Ravel’s ballet suite\, the second half will fill Hamer Hall – and your soul – with the vibrant and glittering sounds of the 20th century. \n\n\n\n\nFriday 5 May 7:30 PM; Arts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\nRunning Time1 hours 45 minutes (including 20 minute interval) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard: $181.00 – $299.00; Concession: $176.00 – $294.00*

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra presents Season Finale Gala: Boléro!
DESCRIPTION:Be transported to the landscape of Spain with vivacious and colourful works from Ravel\, Rodrigo and de Falla. \n\n\n\n\nMaurice Ravel had a lifelong affinity for Spanish culture and music; his mother hailed from Basque Country straddling the border of France and Spain. Rapsodie Espagnole was Ravel’s first composition for orchestra. A mysterious\, intoxicating four-note motif dominates the opening\, followed by two passages inspired by dance forms and a festive conclusion. \nClassical and folk traditions converge in Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez\, featuring “the soul of the Spanish guitar” Pablo Sáinz-Villegas. Proving that inspiration can strike anywhere\, the melody for the seductive second movement of this work came to Rodrigo whilst he was waiting for a tram! \nde Falla’s Three Cornered Hat began life as the accompanying music of a pantomime play. At the encouragement of Serge Diagilev of the Ballet Russes\, de Falla expanded the score into a full ballet. The two orchestral suites string together vignettes from the completed ballet in the original order. \nBoléro is one of the most famous pieces in the orchestral repertoire. Ravel gradually builds a crescendo over fifteen minutes\, floating winding melodies over a persistent snare drum. \n*Please note: de Falla’s El Amor Brujo will no longer be performed as part of this program. \n\n\n\n\nFriday 11 Nov 7:30 PM; Saturday 12 Nov 7:30 PM\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour 45 minutes (including interval) \n\n\n\n\n\nPrice range\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $75.00 – $131.00; Concession* $70.00 – $126.00\n\n*Concession prices apply to Pensioners\, Full-time students\, Unemployed and Children under the age of 18 \nDynamic pricing applies to this event. Ticket prices may be dynamically adjusted\, either up or down\, based on real-time market demand and without notice.
