SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Rachmaninov's Rhapsody
DESCRIPTION:Audience favourite Andrea Lam joins the MSO for Rachmaninov’s powerhouse Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini\, and Jaime Martín conducts Shostakovich’s tragic Tenth Symphony. \n\n\n\n\nPolish composer Grażyna Bacewicz wrote her Overture for Orchestra in 1943 in occupied Poland\, which she was to escape the following year. A short but powerful work\, rumbling lower strings and fanfare brass build momentum and tension\, giving this almost filmic work a frantic urgency as it hurtles towards its final climax. \nRachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini is a virtuosic tour-de-force of 24 variations\, ranging from somber to playful and lighthearted. The famous 18th variation has been used in movies as diverse as Somewhere in Time and Groundhog Day! \nThe interpretation of most of Shostakovich’s works is highly debated\, however his Tenth Symphony is widely viewed as a depiction of the years of Stalinist rule in Russia – years where millions of people died at the hands of the Soviet regime. This symphony\, written the year after Stalin’s death\, depicts the horror and oppression of these years for almost the entirety of its duration\, before ending\, finally\, in a sigh of relief and a breath of triumph. \n\nThursday 30 Nov 7:30 PM;  Saturday 2 Dec 7:30 PM  Running Time 2 hours\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\nTICKETS: $69 – $135

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Mozart's Final Symphonies
DESCRIPTION:Join MSO and Chief Conductor Jaime Martín for this deep dive into Mozart’s enigmatic and radical final symphonies. \n\n\n\n\nThere is a certain air of romantic mystery around the composition and first performances of Mozart’s final three symphonies\, all written together in the summer of 1788\, when the composer was 32. After enjoying several years of prominence and celebrity in Vienna\, Mozart’s career suddenly lost momentum when Vienna declared war on Turkey earlier that year\, and to complicate matters further\, he was in significant debt. These three symphonies were to be his last symphonic works before the early\, tragic death of classical music’s boy genius. \n\nThursday 23 Nov\, 7:30 PM;    Friday 24 Nov\, 7:30 PM Running Time 2 hours 15 minutes\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\nTICKETS: $69 – $135

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Eumeralla\, A War Requiem For Peace
DESCRIPTION:“One day I hope to walk on that country and feel no restless spirit – just the strength of two thousand generations of lives lived and culture sustained.” \n\n\n\n\nSouthwest of Melbourne lies a battleground\, haunted with the memory of war and loss. The scars of the Eumeralla Resistance War (1840 – 1863) lie heavily upon the country. \n“I first walked on this battlefield in 2013. The voices of those lost were so loud that it woke something in me and my immediate response was music. A song. A Requiem. A War Requiem\, named in honour of one of the most brutal resistance wars fought on this continent.” \nEumeralla\, a war Requiem for peace brings into focus a period of Australia’s history that is yet to be fully understood. Written and composed by acclaimed Yorta Yorta soprano\, composer and Artistic Director of Short Black Opera\, Deborah Cheetham AO\, this requiem for peace\, will be sung entirely in the ancient dialects of the Gunditjmara people. \n“It is my hope that this requiem will help the spirits of those who fell to find a lasting peace and that we\, their descendants\, might find our way to deeper understanding of the legacy of these battles.” \n“Eumeralla\, a war requiem for peace will break the silence of so many decades and serve to amplify the importance of our nation’s shared history.” – Deborah Cheetham AO \n\nSaturday 14 Oct 7:30 PM         Running Time1 hour 15 minutes\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\nTICKETS: $55 – $97

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Schumann and Mendelssohn - Abundant Spring
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the arrival of Spring with American superstar violinist Esther Yoo under the baton of MSO Principal Guest Conductor Xian Zhang. \n\n\n\n\nThis program evokes the abundance of springtime – featuring new beginnings\, new life\, and a new work by Cybec Young Composer in Residence Melissa Douglas. \nSchumann wrote his Spring Symphony during the depths of a dark German winter as a pastoral homage to different aspects of the season. We hear its wondrous emergence out of snowy bleakness\, the special atmosphere of a springtime evening\, ‘merry playmates’\, and nature in full bloom at the height of its glory. \nKnown for her expressive\, atmospheric ability to transport the listener to other worlds\, young Australian composer Melissa Douglas’s music has been performed across the world by the BBC Singers\, PLEXUS\, and Polaris Duo to name a few. \nAt the time of its composition\, Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto was considered an innovative reinvention of the genre in the way it foregrounded the solo violin. Esther Yoo makes her mark on this sparkling\, turbulent\, and floridly virtuosic work – described in 1906 by violinist Joseph Joachim as ‘the heart’s jewel’ of violin concertos. \n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 7 Sep 7:30 PM      Running Time 2 hours (including 20 minute interval)\n\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \nTICKETS: $75 – $135

SUMMARY:Australian Chamber Orchestra: Dvořák's Serenade
DESCRIPTION:Give yourself over to this spirited journey featuring the sublime and visceral music of Dvořák and Bartók. \n\n\n\n\nBohemianism is both an idea and an ideal. It stands for unconventionality and the artistic life. At the same time\, it’s nostalgic for the smell of the earth. It craves something real and true. \nWho better than the Australian Chamber Orchestra to lead you on this journey? \nBartók’s passion for the folk music of his native Hungary is visceral. The themes and rhythms from the rural past infuse his Fifth String Quartet with sinew and bite in a new arrangement for string orchestra. Dvořák’s sublime Serenade\, one of the most loved pieces of music for string orchestra\, summons the feeling of warm sun on your back and the wistful remembrance of other times and places. \nBartók and Dvořák are in fine company with the Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Caroline Shaw. Like Dvořák\, a love of dance permeates her music\, with the dizzying range of her many artistic collaborations animating every bar. \n\n\n\n\nSunday 13 Aug\, 2:30 PM; Monday 14 Aug\, 7:30 PM\nRunning Time1 hour 40 minutes (including 20 minute interval)\n\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $49.00 – $139.00; Concession* $49.00 – $129.00; Under 35 (A – D Reserve) $35.00\n\n\nStudent (B – D Reserve) $25.00

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique
DESCRIPTION:Dreams and nightmares collide in this truly epic concert of escapist fantasy. Under the baton of Jaime Martín\, the MSO is joined by the monumental forces of the MSO Chorus and 2023 Ensemble in Residence Gondwana Voices. \n\n\n\n\nDaughter of a Russian princess\, Lili Boulanger grew up in a claustrophobic world of expectation with music serving as her great escape. Psalm 129 begins with the text ‘they have oppressed me since my youth’ – a statement with great autobiographical resonances for this extraordinary composer. \nAustralian Brett Dean’s ‘social cantata’ Vexations and Devotions has been described as reflecting the ‘de-humanisation of contemporary life as exemplified by reality television\, automated answering services and meaningless corporate jargon’ (The Australian). With text by Michael Leunig and Dorothy Porter\, this performance of Dean’s playful and philosophical work features youth choir Gondwana Voices\, MSO 2023 Ensemble in Residence. \nFrench composer Berlioz’s epic Symphonie Fantastique is a prime example of programmatic music – that is\, music with a clear story that the music seeks to evoke. It follows the protagonist’s melodious\, energetically-heaving\, and sometimes horrifying fever dream of love\, death\, and the supernatural. \n\n\n\n\nFriday 14 Jul\, 7:30 PM;  Saturday 15 Jul\, 7:30 PM    Running Time 2 hours 10 minutes\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $69.00 – $121.00\, Concession $64.00 – $116.00*

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto: Quick Fix at Half Six
DESCRIPTION:Let the MSO take your breath away with lush and romantic music – the perfect date night! \n\n\n\n\nInspired by the sensual folk music and dances of his native Transylvania\, Ligeti went out with early recording equipment to ‘collect’ folk tunes from people living in the regions of Romania. His 1951 Concerto Românesc is a manifestation of Ligeti’s deep love of Romanian culture and music\, with a distinctly modern edginess for which his music is known. \n\nProgram Ligeti: Concerto Romanesc;  Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMonday 3 July 6:30 PM;   Running Time1 hour\n\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \nTICKETS: $55 – $97

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: The Ryman Healthcare Winter Gala: Ray Chen performs Tchaikovsky
DESCRIPTION:Let the MSO take your breath away with some of the most lush\, emotive\, and romantic music ever written. \nAdored the world over for his prodigious musical ability and cheeky charisma\, celebrated violinist Ray Chen performs one of the most beautiful\, expressive\, and virtuosic pieces in the violin repertoire – Tchaikovsky’s Concerto for violin and orchestra. \nA masterclass in unbridled melodic passion\, Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony is a stunning display of orchestral emotion – ranging from aching tenderness to turbulent intensity – using the full palette of orchestral colours. \n\n\n\nThursday 29 June 7:30 PM; Saturday 1 July 2:00 PM     Running Time 2 hours 30 minutes\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Thursday 29 June: Standard $83.00 – $151.00; Concession* $78.00 – $146.00\n\n\n\nSaturday 1 July: Standard $79.00 – $137.00; Concession* $74.00 – $132.00
