Nearly half of these were written for his beloved violin\, and his intimate knowledge of the instrument and its capabilities allowed him to push the boundaries of virtuosic possibility. Featuring the MSO’s Tair Khisambeev on violin\, these concertos in F and G give us a moody\, thrilling snapshot of a composer at the height of musical innovation.\nOften lauded as the greatest composer of all time\, Bach’s famous Brandenburg Concertos were written for a potential patron\, whom Bach hoped would give him a job. Taking inspiration from the concertos of Vivaldi\, this set highlights the facility of several instruments\, instead of just one. Like a conversation with many voices\, Bach’s compositional genius foregrounds independent melodies for each instrument with spectacular clarity.\nTelemann’s Overture Suite was dedicated to a hunting enthusiast\, and it’s easy to hear why. A short but powerful work\, rumbling lower strings and fanfare brass build momentum and tension\, giving this almost filmic work a frantic urgency as it hurtles towards its final climax. \nRachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini is a virtuosic tour-de-force of 24 variations\, ranging from somber to playful and lighthearted. The famous 18th variation has been used in movies as diverse as Somewhere in Time and Groundhog Day! \nThe interpretation of most of Shostakovich’s works is highly debated\, however his Tenth Symphony is widely viewed as a depiction of the years of Stalinist rule in Russia – years where millions of people died at the hands of the Soviet regime. DESCRIPTION:For the first time since their sold-out 2019 shows\, the one and only Wynton Marsalis and his legendary Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) return to Melbourne to reunite with the full symphonic sound of the MSO. \nAll Rise\, first performed with the New York Philharmonic in 1999\, is a jazz symphony of a scale not seen before in this country. It’s a 100-minute work that crosses musical terrain from African chant and New Orleans parade music to symphonic modernism. \nThe world-conquering JLCO musicians will team up with the entire MSO as well as the MSO Chorus and Melbourne’s premier vocal ensemble\, the Consort of Melbourne.
