SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Jaime conducts Rachmaninov and Dvořák
DESCRIPTION:oined by dazzling Belgian pianist Denis Kozhukhin\, Jaime Martín conducts the MSO in this uplifting program of musical treats\, including a lively operatic overture\, Rachmaninov’s enduringly popular Second Piano Concerto\, and a sparkling symphony from Dvořák. \nThe Overture to Glinka’s opera Ruslan and Lyudmila is the epitome of orchestral curtain-raisers\, with a furiously fast and infectious opening and rollicking good fun throughout. \nRachmaninov’s vibrant piano writing is set against the full warmth and richness of the orchestra in this musical delight of lyrical melodies\, turbulent swells\, and elegant charm. It is no wonder this continues to be one of Rachmaninov’s most popular works with audiences. \nDvořák’s Eighth Symphony is\, simply\, a joy. The music has a natural\, unforced quality that belies its complexity\, and layers of truly original textures and ear-worm-worthy melodies shine with sparkling clarity.” \nGlinka: Ruslan and Lyudmila: Overture\nRachmaninov: Piano Concerto No.2\nDvorak: Symphony No.8 \nThursday 27 June 7:30 PM; Saturday 29 June 7:30 PM\nRunning Time: 1 hour 45 minutes (including interval) \nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \nPrice range: Standard $79.00 – $129.00; Concession$74.00 – $124.00

SUMMARY:Altstaedt Plays Haydn and Tchaikovsky
DESCRIPTION:The world-renowned cellist and master storyteller makes his ACO debut as soloist and guest director. \nWhen the cello sings\, we hear something akin to the human voice: sensuous\, rich\, profound. When Nicolas Altstaedt holds the bow\, the cello is all that and more\, becoming a master storyteller. \nIt’s been more than a decade since the young cellist burst onto the world stage as a BBC New Generation Artist\, with his unruly curls\, unorthodox concert attire and pure talent. Since then\, he’s piled up musical accolades from the stages of New York\, London and beyond. Now is your chance to see his Australian Chamber Orchestra debut as both director and soloist. \nHaydn’s Cello Concerto in C major is such an audience favourite\, it’s hard to believe it was nearly lost to history. Found in a Prague library just 60 years ago\, the score reveals Haydn’s gift for invention. For all his form and symmetry\, Haydn was a visionary\, breaking musical boundaries with each new work. Two centuries later\, his influence is still felt in the music of 20th-century masters Xenakis and Kurtág. \nTchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations hark back to the classical style of Haydn from a completely different musical world. These enchanting variations for cello and orchestra are by turns virtuosic and lyrical\, and will be performed in a new arrangement for cello and strings. \nThe spirit and jubilation of Haydn is matched by the thrilling energy and wistful defiance of Four Transylvanian Dances by the Hungarian-born Sándor Veress. Written as an ode to a home he could never return to\, they remind us that\, for all its Classical elegance\, Haydn’s music was steeped in the same folk-infused Hungarian rhythms. \nAltstaedt’s debut will showcase the many voices of his cello along with the vitality and dynamism of the ACO. This promises to be a very special collaboration. \nSunday 23 June 2:30 PM; Monday 24 June 7:30 PM\nRunning Time: 2 Hours \nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \nPrice range\nStandard $49.00 – $150.00\nConcession*$49.00 – $139.00\nUnder 35 (A-D Reserve)$35.00\nStudent (B Reserve only)$25.00\n*Concession include Veterans’ Affairs pensioners\, Centrelink-issued Pension and Commonwealth Healthcare cardholders.

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Schumann and Tchaikovsky
DESCRIPTION:Join the MSO and conductor Anja Bihlmaier in exploring the musical introspection of two of classical music’s most profoundly talented and intensely emotional composers. \nLord Byron’s poem Manfred follows a man tortured by guilt\, who summons supernatural beings before dying from madness. The story presents devastating parallels to Schumann’s own mental health decline\, and this Overture – written to accompany the poem – captures its emotional intensity with great beauty and striking intimacy. \nStarting with a literal bang from the timpani and strings\, Robert Schumann’s arresting\, romantic concerto for piano and orchestra is impulsive – almost manic\, even – in its creativity. Pianist Alexander Melnikov brings true star power and originality to this fantastic concerto. \nTchaikovsky considered his Sixth Symphony as ‘the best thing I ever composed or shall compose’. Full of nostalgic warmth\, passion\, and heart\, the Sixth is a musical meditation on the joys of a life remembered\, tempered by the inevitability of death. It ends\, not in jubilant celebration as was the symphonic tradition at the time\, but in a supremely effective fade out to silence. \nThursday 13 Jun7:30 PM\nSaturday 15 Jun2:00 PM\nRunning Time\n2 hours (including interval) \nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \nStandard$75.00 – $139.00\nConcession$70.00 – $134.00

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Rachmaninov and Weinberg
DESCRIPTION:Norwegian trumpet soloist Tine Thing Helseth performs Weinberg’s extraordinary concerto\, the perfect work to highlight the instrument’s considerable range. \n\n\n\n\nAmerican conductor Jonathon Heyward rounds out the A-list for this spectacular concert anchored by Rachmaninov’s expressive Third Symphony. \nShostakovich’s aptly-named Festive Overture is the perfect orchestral party piece\, opening the concert with a brassy fanfare to set the mood for the two incredible works to follow. \nComposed in 1967 by Polish-born Mieczyslaw Weinberg\, each of his trumpet concerto’s three movements – Etudes\, Episodes\, and Fanfares – highlights a distinct personality of the instrument. The first movement’s zany rhythmic jollity gives way to earnest darkness in the second\, before the finale’s quiet\, heavy strings are overlayed with a bright fanfare. \nRussian composer Sergei Rachmaninov wrote his third and final symphony in exile in the 1930s. Those sweeping melodies for which Rachmaninov is known are at the forefront\, but underpinned by a hidden depth of uneasiness and unpredictability. \nNotes *Due to personal circumstances\, Jonathan Heyward is unable to conduct as originally scheduled. \n\nThursday 16 May\, 7:30 PM; Saturday 18 May\, 7:30 PM   Running Time1 hour 40 minutes (including interval)\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\nTICKETS: $20 – $125

Strauss Ein Heldenleben \nAbout this performance\nFrom Greek tragedies to Marvel movies\, the Hero protagonist is an enduring feature of storytelling. Join the MSO under the baton of Chief Conductor Jaime Martin for this fast-paced\, action-packed homage to the heroic. \n\nTurn-of-the-century English composer Ethel Smyth was a heroic rebel of the highest order. A bisexual leader of the suffragette movement\, she served a stint in prison\, and challenged the prejudices of the musical establishment\, all with a flourish of anti-authoritarian flair. Her intensely powerful and socially-damning 1906 opera The Wreckers follows a hypocritical community of Cornish plunderers who lure ships amidst raging storms onto rocks to loot their cargo.\nDebussy’s divine masterpiece\, La Mer\, is a rich and evocative portrayal of the sea and its many moods. A master of musical colour\, Debussy captures his lifelong love of the sea – a romance that had once almost led him to become a sailor. In this shimmering work\, he reveals his attachment to “my old friend\, the sea; it is always endless and beautiful.” Completed in Eastbourne on the English Channel coast\, Debussy also drew on visual inspiration from an earlier generation of painters\, including Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa\, which was a source of key inspiration for Debussy\, and became the cover of the score.\nInspired by Beethoven’s Eroica (heroic) Symphony\, Strauss wrote his tone poem\, Ein Heldenleben\, to depict the various key ingredients in the life of a hero\, including Adversaries\, Companions\, Battles\, and Works of Peace. Strauss strenuously denied allegations that he had based the work on himself\, but later admitted that he felt he was ‘no less interesting than Napoleon’\, and indeed\, the work quotes many of Strauss’ earlier works. SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Bernstein\, Gershwin and Chindamo
DESCRIPTION:Get your gang together and pop on your dance shoes for this concert featuring a unique work for trombone and orchestra composed by Joe Chindamo alongside enduring American favourites. \n\n\n\n\nYou’ll be tapping your toes all the way home. \nJonathon Ramsay – currently Principal Trombone at the Berlin Philharmonic – brings to life Joe Chindamo’s Ligeia. Based on the short story by Edgar Allan Poe\, Chindamo explores psychological duality in this wildly virtuosic meditation on the macabre. \nBased on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and adapted by Stephen Sondheim\, Bernstein’s score to West Side Story is hailed as one of the most brilliant achievements in musical theatre history. His suite of Symphonic Dances is an orchestral romp through some of the most dynamic and moving themes\, including ‘Somewhere’ and ‘Maria’. \nYou might be familiar with the movie-musical An American in Paris starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron\, or perhaps you saw the production that recently swept the Tonys on Broadway. It was this orchestral work by Gershwin – written more than 20 years before the musical – that inspired Hollywood producers and prompted the development of a blockbuster. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMonday 15 Apr 6:30 PM;   Running Time1 hour (no interval)\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\nTICKETS: $62 – $102

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Baroque Festival - St John Passion
DESCRIPTION:Wrapping up MSO’s Baroque Festival is this special 300th Anniversary performance of Bach’s oratorio of biblical proportions – St John Passion. \n\n\n\n\nLauded for his ability to amplify a work’s immediacy and drama\, Stephen Layton – former Music Director at Trinity College Cambridge and founder of world-leading London consort Polyphony – conducts the orchestra for this historic concert\, alongside the mighty MSO chorus and an all-star cast of soloists. \nFirst performed on Good Friday 1724 in Leipzig’s cavernous St Nicholas Church\, Bach’s intensely dramatic St John Passion narrates the Easter Passion of Christ\, according to the gospel of John. \nCompared to his later St Matthew Passion\, the St John has a raw\, uninhibited sense of tragic momentum. With spitting\, bloodthirsty mobs and heartbreaking arias\, this spectacular work hurtles towards the inevitable: a showcase not only of Bach’s incredible technicality\, but of the immense power of musical storytelling. \n\nMelbourne Symphony Orchestra\n\n\n\nStephen Layton\, conductor; Ruairi Bowen\, Evangelist\, tenor; Christopher Richardson\, Christus\, bass;\nDavid Greco. Nearly half of these were written for his beloved violin\, and his intimate knowledge of the instrument and its capabilities allowed him to push the boundaries of virtuosic possibility. Featuring the MSO’s Tair Khisambeev on violin\, these concertos in F and G give us a moody\, thrilling snapshot of a composer at the height of musical innovation.\nOften lauded as the greatest composer of all time\, Bach’s famous Brandenburg Concertos were written for a potential patron\, whom Bach hoped would give him a job. Taking inspiration from the concertos of Vivaldi\, this set highlights the facility of several instruments\, instead of just one. Like a conversation with many voices\, Bach’s compositional genius foregrounds independent melodies for each instrument with spectacular clarity.\nTelemann’s Overture Suite was dedicated to a hunting enthusiast\, and it’s easy to hear why. This selection of musical scenes feels like a day in the countryside with no shortage of thrills\, spills\, and unexpected encounters.\n\n\nTuesday 02 April 2024 7:30pm at Hamer Hall Duration: approx. 75 minutes\, no interval\nTICKETS: $54 – $99

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Jaime conducts Mahler 3
DESCRIPTION:Fasten your musical seatbelts for one of the most thrilling symphonic rides in the repertoire: Mahler’s truly epic Third Symphony. \n\n\n\n\nUnder the baton of Chief Conductor Jaime Martín\, the forces of the MSO are bolstered by Young Voices of Melbourne\, the MSO Chorus\, and electrifying American mezzo-soprano Raehann Bryce-Davis. \nAt the time Mahler composed this work in 1902\, a “symphony” typically had a standard structure comprised of four movements. In approaching his Third Symphony however\, Mahler sought first and foremost to create a “world”\, and to allow the shape of this “world” to dictate the work’s final form. \nIt begins with a Dionysian funeral march as Summer arrives and the Greek god Pan awakes\, before the flowers\, animals\, humanity\, angels\, and love bestow their wisdom upon the listener in the second half. This ancient world in two parts\, comprised of five movements\, embodied a radical modernity that challenged the very identity of the symphony. \n\n\n\n\nThursday 14 Mar\, 7:30 PM; Saturday 16 Mar\, 7:30 PM\nRunning Time1 hour 40 minutes (no interval)\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $86.00 – $139.00; Concession $81.00 – $134.00

SUMMARY:Australian Chamber Orchestra: River
DESCRIPTION:A cinematic odyssey exploring the waterways that have shaped our world\, in all their majesty and fragility. \n\n\n\n\nFor millions of years\, rivers shaped landscapes and sustained communities. In flow\, flood and drought\, rivers gave life and carried it away. In two short centuries\, humans have begun to re-shape rivers. We build dams upstream to sustain our cities. We alter flood plains and vary flows. Downstream\, the changes can be catastrophic. \nAustralian Chamber Orchestra Artistic Director Richard Tognetti and Director Jennifer Peedom follow their acclaimed Mountain with this cinematic exploration of the waterways that have shaped our world. On screen\, the rivers flow in rhythm and harmony with music from outstanding composers. The result is an awe-inspiring combination of timeless music\, captivating cinematography\, and distinctive narration from Academy Award™ winner Willem Dafoe. \nThe score features iconic works by composers including Bach and Ravel\, music by Jonny Greenwood and Radiohead\, and new original music by Richard Tognetti and peerless Indigenous composer William Barton. The soundtrack won ARIA and AACTA awards. \nPerformed live by Richard Tognetti and the ACO\, alongside Jennifer Peedom’s astonishing visuals\, the effect is even more powerful. \n\nSunday 4 Feb\, 2:30 PM   Running Time 2 Hours\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\nTICKETS: $25 – $161
