SUMMARY:The University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Controversy still surrounds Shostakovich’s 1937 Fifth Symphony and whether it was intended as a parodic display against Stalin or a cowering conformist’s response to the recently banned Fourth Symphony — which audiences would have to wait another 25 years to hear. \n\n\n\n\nEither way\, the premiere of the Fifth Symphony was an overwhelming success which appealed to both the public – some of whom openly wept during the largo movement – and the Union of Soviet Composer bureaucrats. However\, there was official concern at how tumultuous the applause was and whether the 30-minute standing ovation was actually a public condemnation of how the composer was being treated by the Soviet Regime. Shostakovich created a perfect bittersweet balance between joy and sorrow and with its comedic second movement and triumphant finale\, it continues to please audiences today and remains one of Shostakovich’s most performed and beloved works. \nBefore the interval the ensemble will perform Dvorak’s sublime (and symphonically scaled) Cello Concerto in B minor\, which was inspired by a trip the composer took to Niagara Falls. When he saw the spectacle\, Dvorak exclaimed “now there is a symphony in b minor!” After the first performance\, the concerto was dubbed Dvorak’s tenth symphony…but it was a surprise (even to the composer) that he wrote it at all as he previously considered the cello (with its “nasal high register and mumbling bass”) not worthy to warrant a concerto! The soloist\, Caleb Wong was a previous winner of the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music Concerto Aria competition. Caleb continued his studies at Northwestern University in the US and has returned to Melbourne to join the cello section of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. One of the great prodigies\, he wrote his sunny Octet at just 16 years of age. It’s one of the most loved pieces of chamber music ever written and a favourite of the ACO. In their hands\, its youthful exuberance just about leaps off the stage. \nMoving from one young genius to another: the ACO presents a new commission from trailblazing young composer Jakub Jankowski in his first work for string orchestra. Hailing from Adelaide\, he’s a fresh voice in classical music. Opening the program\, Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s pulsating octet Illumine makes a striking contrast with the Mendelssohn. \nIf Mendelssohn is pleasure\, then Bach is worship. \nBach sought God in his music and became like a god for musicians\, a touchstone to which all other music is compared. But Joachim’s loss is Gomyo’s gain – the work’s lush\, romantic Adagio\, and its animated\, folk-inspired dance forms have cemented its popularity with violinists and audiences alike. \nIn contrast to the fast-paced works above\, Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony takes its time\, in no rush to show its full character too soon. The structure of tempo changes in this seamless patchwork of a piece means that time behaves almost as an illusion. The music’s imperceptible shifting of gears results in an immersive\, wonderfully-disorienting experience. \nA Requiem – a mass for the dead – might seem a strange choice for a composer who was described by his son as ‘a sceptic’. This perspective proved an asset for Fauré\, who brings a vastly different message to his Requiem than his predecessors. SUMMARY:The University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Scheherazade
DESCRIPTION:Based on The Arabian Nights\, this story begins with Scheherazade’s marriage to Sultan Schakhriar (known for having executed all of his previous wives\, the day after each wedding). \nBeing the executioner’s daughter and in an attempt to save her own life\, Scheherazade begins telling the Sultan extended fairy tales – each one with a climactic cliff-hanger. Desperate to hear the conclusion\, the Sultan permits her to live for just one more day. The next evening\, she concludes the story but then immediately begins another\, even more fantastical than the last! For 1001 nights this continues\, until the Sultan realises that he cannot live without her. In Rimsky-Korsakoff’s telling of this story\, the concertmaster takes on the role of Scheherazade and the trombones depict the Sultan.  \nThe University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra will open the concert with the Victorian Premiere of Miriama Young’s Kinds of Blue.  Written with Scheherazade in mind\, this work draws inspiration from: four of Mark Rothko’s blue-centric works; Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue and Sketches of Spain and filmmaker\, Derek Jarman’s Chroma. The piece is written from a synaesthetic perspective and is structurally based on the tension between the deep blue of E major and light sky blue of F# minor\, exploring the duality of these two colours\, as expressed in the works of Rimsky-Korsakov (who was a synesthete – seeing specific colours when hearing music). \nJust before the interval the ensemble will be fusing jazz and classical music with the Cyber Bird Concerto\, written in 1994 by Japanese composer Takashi Yoshimatsu. This work is strictly a triple concerto and places a jazz trio of saxophone\, piano and percussion at the front of the stage. When Nicolas Altstaedt holds the bow\, the cello is all that and more\, becoming a master storyteller. \nIt’s been more than a decade since the young cellist burst onto the world stage as a BBC New Generation Artist\, with his unruly curls\, unorthodox concert attire and pure talent. Since then\, he’s piled up musical accolades from the stages of New York\, London and beyond. Now is your chance to see his Australian Chamber Orchestra debut as both director and soloist. \nHaydn’s Cello Concerto in C major is such an audience favourite\, it’s hard to believe it was nearly lost to history. Found in a Prague library just 60 years ago\, the score reveals Haydn’s gift for invention. For all his form and symmetry\, Haydn was a visionary\, breaking musical boundaries with each new work. Two centuries later\, his influence is still felt in the music of 20th-century masters Xenakis and Kurtág. \nTchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations hark back to the classical style of Haydn from a completely different musical world. These enchanting variations for cello and orchestra are by turns virtuosic and lyrical\, and will be performed in a new arrangement for cello and strings. \nThe spirit and jubilation of Haydn is matched by the thrilling energy and wistful defiance of Four Transylvanian Dances by the Hungarian-born Sándor Veress. Written as an ode to a home he could never return to\, they remind us that\, for all its Classical elegance\, Haydn’s music was steeped in the same folk-infused Hungarian rhythms. \nAltstaedt’s debut will showcase the many voices of his cello along with the vitality and dynamism of the ACO. Since then\, he’s piled up musical accolades from the stages of New York\, London and beyond. Now is your chance to see his Australian Chamber Orchestra debut as both director and soloist. \nHaydn’s Cello Concerto in C major is such an audience favourite\, it’s hard to believe it was nearly lost to history. Found in a Prague library just 60 years ago\, the score reveals Haydn’s gift for invention. For all his form and symmetry\, Haydn was a visionary\, breaking musical boundaries with each new work. Two centuries later\, his influence is still felt in the music of 20th-century masters Xenakis and Kurtág. \nTchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations hark back to the classical style of Haydn from a completely different musical world. These enchanting variations for cello and orchestra are by turns virtuosic and lyrical\, and will be performed in a new arrangement for cello and strings. \nThe spirit and jubilation of Haydn is matched by the thrilling energy and wistful defiance of Four Transylvanian Dances by the Hungarian-born Sándor Veress. Written as an ode to a home he could never return to\, they remind us that\, for all its Classical elegance\, Haydn’s music was steeped in the same folk-infused Hungarian rhythms. \nAltstaedt’s debut will showcase the many voices of his cello along with the vitality and dynamism of the ACO. Pianist Alexander Melnikov brings true star power and originality to this fantastic concerto. \nTchaikovsky considered his Sixth Symphony as ‘the best thing I ever composed or shall compose’. Full of nostalgic warmth\, passion\, and heart\, the Sixth is a musical meditation on the joys of a life remembered\, tempered by the inevitability of death.
