SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Debussy\, Wagner and Strauss
DESCRIPTION:Prepare for a heartbreakingly beautiful program as conductor Fabien Gabel leads the MSO through the thrilling illicit encounters and devastating separation of forbidden love. \n\n\n\n\nAdapted from Maurice Maeterlinck’s symbolist play of the same name\, Debussy’s 1898 suite of music from his the opera Pelléas and Mélisande tells the tale of doomed lovers through swirling\, impressionistic musical language. \nIf a single work had to be named to have shaped the course of history\, it may well be Wagner’s opera Tristan and Isolde. Tristan demonstrated the profound capacity of music to create drama and reveal the inner emotions of characters on a level that was\, at that time\, unimaginable. The opera’s bookends – Prelude and Liebestod (Love-Death) – ache with the passion and catastrophe of these lovers’ fates. \nRichard Strauss’ lush\, colourful Fantasy draws upon musical highlights from his 1919 operatic romance\, Die Frau ohne Schatten (The Woman Without a Shadow). \n\n\n\n\nMonday 14 October 6:30 PM     Running Time1 hour (no interval)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\nTICKETS: Standard $59.00 – $99.00; Concession $54.00 – $94.00

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Forbidden Love
DESCRIPTION:From Debussy’s and Wagner’s doomed lovers to Richard Strauss’ colourful Fantasy\, this program explores the passion and catastrophe of forbidden love\, conducted by Fabien Gabel. \n\n\n\n\nAlexandra Dariescu joins the MSO as soloist in Clara Schumann’s long overlooked Piano Concerto. \nAdapted from Maurice Maeterlinck’s symbolist play of the same name\, Debussy’s 1898 suite of music from his the opera Pelléas and Mélisande tells the tale of doomed lovers through swirling\, impressionistic musical language. \nDespite being forbidden by her father to marry Robert Schumann\, Clara did just that\, the day before her 21st birthday. A renowned concert pianist and talented composer\, Clara had premiered her own Piano Concerto\, filled with ravishing\, memorable themes\, at the age of just sixteen. While she continued to perform across Europe to great acclaim after marrying Robert\, her own compositional works were largely overlooked by the male-dominated world of classical music. In recent years\, her brilliance as a composer has been recognised\, in no small part due to this compelling concerto. \nIf a single work had to be named to have shaped the course of history\, it may well be Wagner’s opera Tristan and Isolde. SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Shostakovich's First Cello Concerto
DESCRIPTION:Legendary English cellist Steven Isserlis returns to Melbourne for this exhilarating program conducted by Benjamin Northey\, anchored by Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto and Prokoviev’s shimmering final symphony. \n\n\n\n\nComposer Yasushi Akutagawa was so enamoured with Russian music that he entered the Soviet Union illegally in 1954\, where he established friendships with Shostakovich\, Khachaturian and Kabalevsky\, among others. This fantastic Triptyque (1953) for string orchestra fuses the punchiness of the Russian musical tradition with the folk sounds of his native Japan. \nShostakovich’s First Cello Concerto was written in 1959 for his friend\, the legendary cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. The latter was so taken with it\, that he learned it by heart in just four days. \nEmerging Australian composer Naomi Dodd is known for her emotional\, passion-filled works that spring from everyday experiences. Witness the premiere of a new work commissioned as part of the Cybec Young Composers’ Program. \nCompleted the year before his death in 1953\, Prokofiev’s seventh and final symphony showcases his mastery of the orchestra\, its apparent simplicity masking deep musical and emotional complexity. \n\n\n\n\nThursday 3 Oc 7:30 PM\n\n\nSaturday 5 Oct 7:30 PM\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour 45 minutes \nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $75.00 – $139.00; Concession $70.00 – $134.00

SUMMARY:The University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Controversy still surrounds Shostakovich’s 1937 Fifth Symphony and whether it was intended as a parodic display against Stalin or a cowering conformist’s response to the recently banned Fourth Symphony — which audiences would have to wait another 25 years to hear. \n\n\n\n\nEither way\, the premiere of the Fifth Symphony was an overwhelming success which appealed to both the public – some of whom openly wept during the largo movement – and the Union of Soviet Composer bureaucrats. However\, there was official concern at how tumultuous the applause was and whether the 30-minute standing ovation was actually a public condemnation of how the composer was being treated by the Soviet Regime. Shostakovich created a perfect bittersweet balance between joy and sorrow and with its comedic second movement and triumphant finale\, it continues to please audiences today and remains one of Shostakovich’s most performed and beloved works. \nBefore the interval the ensemble will perform Dvorak’s sublime (and symphonically scaled) Cello Concerto in B minor\, which was inspired by a trip the composer took to Niagara Falls. When he saw the spectacle\, Dvorak exclaimed “now there is a symphony in b minor!” After the first performance\, the concerto was dubbed Dvorak’s tenth symphony…but it was a surprise (even to the composer) that he wrote it at all as he previously considered the cello (with its “nasal high register and mumbling bass”) not worthy to warrant a concerto! The soloist\, Caleb Wong was a previous winner of the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music Concerto Aria competition. Caleb continued his studies at Northwestern University in the US and has returned to Melbourne to join the cello section of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. We welcome him back to celebrate his achievements and also to claim his competition prize of performing with The University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. \n\n\n\n\nSunday 22 September 5:00 PM\n\n\nRunning Time 2 hours \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: A limit of 2 tickets per transaction applies.\nFREE \nPlease note: Limit of 2 tickets per transaction.

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Tan Dun: Nine
DESCRIPTION:MSO Artistic Ambassadors Tan Dun and Lu Siqing join the Orchestra for a celebratory performance. \n\n\n\n\nThis concert opens with the Overture to Beethoven’s only ballet. The energetic score represents Prometheus fleeing from heaven after stealing fire from the Gods. \nTan Dun’s Violin Concerto seamlessly blends Eastern and Western musical traditions\, here performed by Lu Siqing. \nPaired with the famous Ode to Joy from the final movement of Beethoven’s Ninth\, Tan Dun conducts the Australian premier of his choral concerto\, Nine. This work is Dun’s response to Beethoven\, co-commissioned by the MSO and the Philharmonic Society of London – the very group who commissioned Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony two hundred years ago. \n\n\n\n\nSaturday 14 September 7:30 PM\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour 40 minutes (including interval) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: $75 – $125 \n\n\n\n\nStandard $75.00 – $125.00; Concession $70.00 – $120.00

SUMMARY:Australian Chamber Orchestra – Tognetti. Mendelssohn. Bach
DESCRIPTION:Sparks fly and melodies soar when Richard Tognetti directs music close to the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s heart. \n\n\n\n\nMendelssohn’s music is pure pleasure. One of the great prodigies\, he wrote his sunny Octet at just 16 years of age. It’s one of the most loved pieces of chamber music ever written and a favourite of the ACO. In their hands\, its youthful exuberance just about leaps off the stage. \nMoving from one young genius to another: the ACO presents a new commission from trailblazing young composer Jakub Jankowski in his first work for string orchestra. Hailing from Adelaide\, he’s a fresh voice in classical music. Opening the program\, Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s pulsating octet Illumine makes a striking contrast with the Mendelssohn. \nIf Mendelssohn is pleasure\, then Bach is worship. \nBach sought God in his music and became like a god for musicians\, a touchstone to which all other music is compared. His music is filled with drama\, joy and remarkable discipline. Hearing it\, playing it\, is an act of worship. \nThat is an altar to which Richard Tognetti will return to again and again. His recordings of Bach’s violin music won three successive ARIA Awards. Live\, his interpretation of the great Violin Concerto in A minor is a powerful experience: intimate and electrifying. \nLike all the best performances\, this concert will remind you of why you love music. \n\nSunday 8 Sep 2:30 PM    Running Time 2 Hours\n\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\n\nTICKETS: $25 – $150

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Dvořák and Bruckner
DESCRIPTION:The MSO welcomes extraordinary violinist Karen Gomyo and German-based Australian conductor Daniel Carter for this glorious program of Czech and German gems to satiate your musical soul. \n\n\n\n\nSmetana’s exuberant overture to his 1866 comic opera The Bartered Bride weaves dance-like Czech folk tunes with rollicking strings and characterful woodwinds\, hurtling toward a triumphant finale. \nDvořák wrote his Violin Concerto for the superstar virtuoso Joseph Joachim\, who expressed his disapproval over elements of the composition\, and then ultimately refused to perform it. But Joachim’s loss is Gomyo’s gain – the work’s lush\, romantic Adagio\, and its animated\, folk-inspired dance forms have cemented its popularity with violinists and audiences alike. \nIn contrast to the fast-paced works above\, Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony takes its time\, in no rush to show its full character too soon. Instead\, this broad work starts with solo horn against a backdrop of simmering strings\, building throughout until the demure opening theme metamorphoses into a bursting\, glorious finale. \n\n\n\n\nThursday 5 September 7:30 PM\n\n\nSaturday 7 September 7:30 PM\n\n\nRunning Time 2 hours 15 minutes (including interval) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $75.00 – $139.00; Concession $70.00 – $134.00

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Fauré's Requiem
DESCRIPTION:Experience the otherworldly in this sublime program conducted by Lawrence Renes\, culminating in Fauré’s divine Requiem\, featuring the MSO Chorus and much-loved soloists Siobhan Stagg and Roderick Williams. \n\n\n\n\nInspired by the mental image of entering a mythical cave\, Elena Kats-Chernin’s moody\, hymn-like work transports its audience to a mesmerising and fantastical domain. \nThe ability of Sibelius’ Seventh Symphony to lure its listener to another dimension is remarkable. The structure of tempo changes in this seamless patchwork of a piece means that time behaves almost as an illusion. The music’s imperceptible shifting of gears results in an immersive\, wonderfully-disorienting experience. \nA Requiem – a mass for the dead – might seem a strange choice for a composer who was described by his son as ‘a sceptic’. This perspective proved an asset for Fauré\, who brings a vastly different message to his Requiem than his predecessors. Instead of a haunting\, sombre work\, Fauré’s is a profound meditation on the restful warmth waiting in paradise \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 29 August\, 7:30 PM\n\n\nSaturday 31 August\, 2:00 PM\nRunning Time1 hour 40 minutes (including interval)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\nTICKETS: Standard $75.00 – $139.00; Concession $70.00 – $134.00

SUMMARY:The University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Scheherazade
DESCRIPTION:Based on The Arabian Nights\, this story begins with Scheherazade’s marriage to Sultan Schakhriar (known for having executed all of his previous wives\, the day after each wedding). \nBeing the executioner’s daughter and in an attempt to save her own life\, Scheherazade begins telling the Sultan extended fairy tales – each one with a climactic cliff-hanger. Desperate to hear the conclusion\, the Sultan permits her to live for just one more day. The next evening\, she concludes the story but then immediately begins another\, even more fantastical than the last! For 1001 nights this continues\, until the Sultan realises that he cannot live without her. In Rimsky-Korsakoff’s telling of this story\, the concertmaster takes on the role of Scheherazade and the trombones depict the Sultan.  \nThe University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra will open the concert with the Victorian Premiere of Miriama Young’s Kinds of Blue.  Written with Scheherazade in mind\, this work draws inspiration from: four of Mark Rothko’s blue-centric works; Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue and Sketches of Spain and filmmaker\, Derek Jarman’s Chroma. The piece is written from a synaesthetic perspective and is structurally based on the tension between the deep blue of E major and light sky blue of F# minor\, exploring the duality of these two colours\, as expressed in the works of Rimsky-Korsakov (who was a synesthete – seeing specific colours when hearing music). \nJust before the interval the ensemble will be fusing jazz and classical music with the Cyber Bird Concerto\, written in 1994 by Japanese composer Takashi Yoshimatsu. This work is strictly a triple concerto and places a jazz trio of saxophone\, piano and percussion at the front of the stage. In this performance\, Melbourne Conservatorium 2022 Concerto/Aria Competition winner Justinn Lu will be the saxophone soloist.  \nSunday 18 August 5:00 PM; Running Time 1 hour 45 minutes (including 20 minute interval)\nArts Centre Melbourne\,Hamer Hall\nTICKETS: Free limit of two per person

SUMMARY:Australian Chamber Orchestra: Silence & Rapture
DESCRIPTION:A mesmerising collaboration with Sydney Dance Company featuring countertenor Iestyn Davies and the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and Arvo Pärt. \nComposing three centuries apart\, Johann Sebastian Bach and Arvo Pärt’s timeless music speaks to the human soul. From rockstars and writers to artists and filmmakers\, these composers are revered by music lovers across genres and generations. The last time the Australian Chamber Orchestra performed their music together\, it was a sell-out. \nRichard Tognetti directs this mesmerising collaboration between the ACO and Sydney Dance Company that brings together music\, movement and evocative lighting to create something truly extraordinary. \nExpressing the luminous longing at the heart of this music is choreography from Rafael Bonachela\, Artistic Director Sydney Dance Company\, while Gramophone Award-winning countertenor Iestyn Davies\, whose performances have been described as “a pleasure that verges on the sublime” (The Guardian) makes his Australian debut\, bringing these stirring melodies to life. \nBach and Pärt’s music is rooted in human experience while reaching towards the divine. This program traces a profound journey through three Gardens at the heart of the Biblical narrative they both hold so close: from the hope and temptation of the Garden of Eden to the tragedy and passion of the Garden of Gethsemane\, ascending into the Garden of Heaven and\, at last\, the meditation of silence. Featuring Part’s Fratres and selections from Bach’s most loved cantatas\, orchestral and solo music\, this promises to be a season highlight and a deeply affirming experience. \nSunday 11 August 2:30 PM\nRunning Time: 2 Hours \nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \nTICKETS: $25 – $135

SUMMARY:Opera Australia: Breaking the Waves
DESCRIPTION:You have a golden heart\, sometimes too golden\, too good. And who am I to warn you of living a life too honest\, too true? \nLars von Trier’s 1996 film about a young woman’s shocking sacrifices for her husband was an immediate sensation on its premiere\, winning the Grand Prix at Cannes Film Festival. The story of the devout Bess McNeill\, and the stormy Scottish Highland community she belongs to\, resonates deeply with audiences and is now a powerful new opera for our times. \nBess has fallen for Jan\, a handsome foreigner and oil rig worker. Soon after their wedding\, Jan survives a serious accident that sees him paralysed. Bess’s marital vows and unwavering love are put to the test when her husband asks her to sleep with other men and tell him of her sexual activities. Jan’s request puts Bess at odds with her fiercely religious community\, setting in motion a disastrous series of events. \nAs von Trier breaks open the extreme emotional possibilities of cinema\, so does Missy Mazzoli with opera. \nDubbed by Time Out as “Brooklyn’s post-millennial Mozart”\, Mazzoli is one of the most exciting composers working anywhere in the world. Her adaptation of von Trier’s film has been acclaimed as one of the 21st century’s best operas. \nThe film’s unsettling silence becomes a roar of emotion in Mazzoli’s score. The suffocating\, revealing close-ups become richly textured arias. \nAustralian conductor Jessica Cottis and Melbourne Theatre Company Artistic Director Anne-Louise Sarks bring Bess’s story to life in this semi-staged production. \nThe cast is led by the superb Jennifer Black as Bess. Australian-raised baritone Duncan Rock plays Jan\, reprising his acclaimed performance from the opera’s European premiere at Edinburgh International Festival. \nFriday 26 July 7:30 PM\nSunday 28 July CANCELLED\nRunning Time: Approximately 2 hours and 50 minutes\, including one interval. \nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \nTICKETS: Standard$69.00 – $199.00\nChild$34.00 – $179\nStudent & Pensioner$62.00 – $179.00\nGroup 8+$58.00 – $169.00

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Jaime conducts Romeo and Juliet
DESCRIPTION:Experience two vivid depictions of Shakespeare’s most famous love story\, conducted by Jaime Martín. Plus\, Christian Li joins the MSO to perform Paganini’s heroic violin concerto. \nTchaikovsky’s Fantasy Overture – while inspired by Shakespeare’s great tragedy – was designed to stand on its own\, with various themes depicting different characters and moments in the plot. The overture’s famous “love theme” is ingrained in the memories of millennials everywhere as the ‘kiss’ in video game The Sims. \nComposer Niccolò Paganini achieved technical feats on the violin that were considered impossible by many. In fact\, his virtuosic talents were so remarkable that they stirred up rumours that he’d sold his soul to the devil in exchange for such profound gifts. His First Violin Concerto traverses memorable melodies and mind-blowing virtuosity in a thrilling display of theatricality\, performed here by Christian Li. \nSergei Prokofiev’s score for Romeo and Juliet – written for the famous Mariinsky Theatre – is some of his best known and loved.
