SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Ryman Healthcare Season Opening Gala: Mahler's Resurrection Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Season 2025 opens with one of the greatest symphonies ever written: Mahler’s monumental Symphony No.2. \n\n\n\n\nWhen he started writing in 1888\, the then-28-year-old Mahler faced a series of intense existential questions. “Why have you lived? Why have you suffered? Is it all some huge\, awful joke? We have to answer these questions somehow if we are to go on living – indeed\, even if we are only to go on dying!” \nBelieving in the symphony’s potential to embody an entire world\, Mahler explored these questions in a thrilling work featuring a vast orchestra alongside chorus and soloists. \nIn the expansive first movement\, Mahler comes head to head with death in a furious funeral march\, while a lilting folk dance and searching scenes of nostalgia and mourning comprise the following three movements. An epic choral finale culminates in a transcendent\, life-affirming conclusion – recently featured in Bradley Cooper’s popular film Maestro. \nThe Resurrection Symphony is a breath-taking hymn to redemption\, the afterlife and the resilience of the human spirit. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear Mahler’s masterpiece under the charismatic direction of MSO’s Chief Conductor Jaime Martín. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMSO – Jaime Martín Conductor\n\n\nEleanor Lyons Soprano\n\n\nCatriona Morison Mezzo-soprano\n\n\nMSO Chorus – Warren Trevelyan-Jones Chorus director\n\n\n\n27 February 7.30 and 1 March 7.30\n\n\n\n\nHamer Hall \nTICKETS: $68.85 – $93

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Milestone
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nPresented by Asia TOPA\, Arts Centre Melbourne and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra \nMilestoneWilliam Yang and the MSO with Elena Kats-Chernin\nAsia TOPA opens with a landmark new commission by one of Australia’s most celebrated artists. \n\n\n\n\nHaving reached his milestone 80th birthday\, pioneering artist William Yang reflects on his extraordinary life in this epic new performance. Yang’s iconic photographs and captivating stories are complemented by a haunting score performed live by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. \nInternationally-acclaimed Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin — a long-time friend and collaborator of Yang’s — composed a moving score especially for Milestone\, and will perform live on stage alongside the Orchestra for this performance. \nYang is a trailblazing champion of Asian–Australian culture internationally. He documented the birth of Australia’s LGBTQI+ rights movement from the early days of Sydney’s Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras to the devastating impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 1980s and 90s. Unassuming\, evocative and honestly examined\, Yang looks back on his vast archive of photography\, contemplating five decades of social change and the evolution of Australia’s bohemian artist community. \nMilestone is Yang’s most ambitious and personal performance to date. Don’t miss this one-night-only encounter with a legend of Asia-Pacific performance sharing his stories of immigration\, sexuality\, creativity and family. \nProcess Lab: Join an intimate conversation with William Yang and dramatrug/co-director\, Tessa Leong as they reflect on the process of making Milestone together. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the grand finale of our Beethoven Festival – featuring some of Australia’s best opera singers\, the MSO Chorus\, and a brand new MSO commission – under the baton of Chief Conductor Jaime Martín. \n\n\n\n\nKnown for his exceptional choral music\, the title of Sir James MacMillan’s Concerto for Orchestra is something of an enigma\, in that a concerto is conventionally written for a solo instrument and orchestra\, rather than for orchestra and… orchestra. Join us in cracking the code of this newly commissioned work from one of the UK’s most sought-after composers. \nAfter eight symphonies\, Beethoven took his Ninth to a whole new level by composing the biggest symphony in existence – a beast of a work depicting the triumphant union of all mankind. Almost entirely deaf by this point\, this landmark feat for choir and orchestra is best known for its epic finale of Ode to Joy. A star-studded line-up of soloists join the MSO and MSO Chorus for this rousing performance of the great choral symphony. \n\n\n\nMelbourne Symphony Orchestra\nJaime Martín Conductor\n\n\nLauren Fagan Soprano; Michaela Schuster Alto; Stuart Skelton Tenor; Sam Dale Johnson Bass\n\n\nMSO Chorus\, Warren Trevelyan-Jones Chorus Director\n\n\nAuslan Choir\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 28 Nov 7:30 PM; Friday 29 Nov 7:30 PM; Saturday 30 Nov 2:00 PM\n\n\nRunning Time 2 hours (including interval \nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $84.00 – $142.00; Concession $79.00 – $137.00*\n\n\nGroup Standard 10+ $71.40 – $120.70; Group Concession 10+ $67.15 – $116.45*\n\n*Concession prices apply to pensioners\, full-time students\, under-18s and Health Care cardholders.

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Beethoven Festival: Symphonies 7 & 8
DESCRIPTION:Avoid peak hour with a quick post-work Beethoven fix at this early-evening concert of his energetic and playful Seventh and Eighth symphonies. \n\n\n\n\nThe Seventh gathers momentum as it bounds along with great energy. Similar to the Sixth\, it has slight tinge of the pastoral\, though the mood is darker and punchier than its predecessor. After its premiere in 1813\, the crowd demanded to hear the second movement again – but you’ll only need to hear it once to be humming its theme on the tram home. \nIn 1812 when he was almost completely deaf\, Beethoven composed his Eighth Symphony\, which has been described quite brilliantly as one of the ‘shortest\, weirdest\, and most compelling symphonies of the 19th Century’ (The Guardian). What appears on the surface as light-hearted playfulness is in reality a radical work that challenged the idea of the symphony as a genre. It also contains one of music’s best jokes in the second movement\, where he imitates his friend’s new invention – the metronome. \n\n\n\n\nMonday 25 November 6:30 PM\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\nTICKETS: Standard $79.00 – $120.00; Concession $74.00 – $115.00\n\nGroups (10 or more) \n\nStandard $67.15 – $102.00\n\n\nConcession $62.90 – $97.75

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Beethoven Festival: Symphonies 4 & 6
DESCRIPTION:Beethoven’s two most feel-good symphonies make up the middle of our Festival fortnight. \n\n\n\n\nThe lightness of the Fourth and the escape to the country of the Sixth are musical self-care of the highest order! \nSchumann described Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony as ‘a slender Greek maiden between two Nordic giants’ – those giants being the heroic third and epic fifth symphonies. In contrast\, the Fourth’s dancing lightness gives it a quality akin to chamber music\, filled with gentle humour and elegant melodies. \nA keen rambler\, Beethoven’s joyful Pastoral Symphony takes its inspiration from nature. The composer takes us on a country walk to enjoy babbling brooks\, birdsong\, country dancing\, and caps it off with a thunderstorm. This peaceful invocation of open space\, sunshine\, and clean air is immersive\, musical escapism for city-dwellers at its finest. \n\n\n\n\nSaturday 23 November 7:30 PM\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour 40 minutes (including interval) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStandard $81.00 – $131.00\, Concession* $76.00 – $126.00\n\nGroups (10 or more) Standard $68.85 – $111.35; Concession* $64.60 – $107.10

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Beethoven Festival: Symphonies 2 & 5
DESCRIPTION:Join the MSO and Jaime Martín for Beethoven’s Second and Fifth symphonies in this concert of musical contrasts. \n\n\n\n\nThe Second Symphony\, with its dramatic opening and light-speed strings\, has one foot in the classical era\, and one in the romantic. With its captivating melodies and good cheer\, it’s hard to contemplate that while writing this\, Beethoven’s deafness was becoming more profound\, and he was in the darkest moments of his life. \nThe first eight notes of Beethoven’s famous Fifth Symphony have come to define it – referenced constantly in popular culture\, they’re also a subject of hot discussion in musical circles. Some consider them the sound of fate knocking at Beethoven’s door\, others see them as a secret\, coded message in support of the French revolution\, and others still are content simply to argue about how they should be played. In any case\, beyond the gateway of this famous opening lies an awe-inspiring symphony of epic proportions. \n\n\n\n\nThursday 21 November 7:30 PM\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour 30 minutes (including interval) Ats Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $81.00 – $131.00; Concession* $76.00 – $126.00\n\nGroups (10 or more) \n\nStandard $68.85 – $111.35; Concession* $64.60 – $107.10

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Beethoven Festival: Symphonies 1 & 3
DESCRIPTION:The MSO’s Beethoven Festival kicks off at Hamer Hall with the First and Third symphonies. \n\n\n\n\nConsider this concert the musical Sparknotes version of how Beethoven constructed a symphonic footbridge between the Classical and Romantic eras. \nIn his First symphony\, Beethoven dips his toes in the symphonic waters by honouring the music of Haydn with oodles of classical charm and wit. Intentionally off-putting\, it starts in the “wrong key” before settling into C major\, and a Haydn-esque joke opens the finale – the setup is hesitant and gloomy before the musical punchline transforms it into a light\, sparkling thrill. \nThe heroic Eroica symphony saw Beethoven break away from the overt influence of Mozart and Haydn to develop his own original voice. It was this\, his rousing Third Symphony\, that ignited the musical revolution that would become the Romantic era. \n\n\n\n\nTuesday 19 November 7:30 PM\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour 40 mins (including interval) \n\n\n\n\n\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $75.00 – $125.00; Concession $70.00 – $120.00\n\n\nConcession  $59.50 – $102.00\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Debussy\, Wagner and Strauss
DESCRIPTION:Prepare for a heartbreakingly beautiful program as conductor Fabien Gabel leads the MSO through the thrilling illicit encounters and devastating separation of forbidden love. \n\n\n\n\nAdapted from Maurice Maeterlinck’s symbolist play of the same name\, Debussy’s 1898 suite of music from his the opera Pelléas and Mélisande tells the tale of doomed lovers through swirling\, impressionistic musical language. \nIf a single work had to be named to have shaped the course of history\, it may well be Wagner’s opera Tristan and Isolde. Tristan demonstrated the profound capacity of music to create drama and reveal the inner emotions of characters on a level that was\, at that time\, unimaginable. The opera’s bookends – Prelude and Liebestod (Love-Death) – ache with the passion and catastrophe of these lovers’ fates. \nRichard Strauss’ lush\, colourful Fantasy draws upon musical highlights from his 1919 operatic romance\, Die Frau ohne Schatten (The Woman Without a Shadow). \n\n\n\n\nMonday 14 October 6:30 PM     Running Time1 hour (no interval)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\nTICKETS: Standard $59.00 – $99.00; Concession $54.00 – $94.00

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Forbidden Love
DESCRIPTION:From Debussy’s and Wagner’s doomed lovers to Richard Strauss’ colourful Fantasy\, this program explores the passion and catastrophe of forbidden love\, conducted by Fabien Gabel. \n\n\n\n\nAlexandra Dariescu joins the MSO as soloist in Clara Schumann’s long overlooked Piano Concerto. \nAdapted from Maurice Maeterlinck’s symbolist play of the same name\, Debussy’s 1898 suite of music from his the opera Pelléas and Mélisande tells the tale of doomed lovers through swirling\, impressionistic musical language. \nDespite being forbidden by her father to marry Robert Schumann\, Clara did just that\, the day before her 21st birthday. A renowned concert pianist and talented composer\, Clara had premiered her own Piano Concerto\, filled with ravishing\, memorable themes\, at the age of just sixteen. While she continued to perform across Europe to great acclaim after marrying Robert\, her own compositional works were largely overlooked by the male-dominated world of classical music. In recent years\, her brilliance as a composer has been recognised\, in no small part due to this compelling concerto. \nIf a single work had to be named to have shaped the course of history\, it may well be Wagner’s opera Tristan and Isolde. Tristan demonstrated the profound capacity of music to create drama and reveal the inner emotions of characters on a level that was\, at that time\, unimaginable.
