SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra presents Jaime conducts Dvořák\, Smetana & Coll
DESCRIPTION:Most of us have heard Dvořák’s Symphony No.9 From the New World. But why is it so much harder to find a concert featuring his Symphony No.7? The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra can’t figure it out — that’s why they’re presenting a live performance of this unusually neglected work. \n\n\n\n\nJust like the Ninth\, this symphony is also infused with the Czech composer’s nostalgic love of his homeland\, and its lively third movement recalls a Czech folk dance. A similarly sentimental theme runs through Smetana’s Má vlast: Vltava\, named after the Vltava River that flows across the Czech countryside. The gentle swirl of the flute marks the beginning of this picturesque river journey have you flowing with the river towards the stunning city of Prague. \nCloser to our own home\, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra has co-commissioned a new piano concerto. Be there for the Australian premiere of this new work from Spanish-born composer Francisco Coll. \n\n\n\n\nMelbourne Symphony Orchestra\nJaime Martín Conductor\nKirill Gerstein Piano\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDvořák Symphony No.7\n\nFrancisco Coll Piano Concerto*\nSmetana Má vlast: Vltava \n\n*Australian Premiere of an MSO Co-commission\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 28 May 7:30 PM\n\n\nSaturday 30 May 2:00 PM\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour 30 minutes (including interval) \n\n\n\nHamer Hall\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: $20 – $127

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra presents Great Passions
DESCRIPTION:If you’re the type of listener who likes to experience the full force of the orchestra\, this concert is for you. \n\n\n\n\nOur stage will be packed with musicians from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra performing alongside next-generation talent from the Australian National Academy of Music. Sitting in Hamer Hall\, the colossal scale of this combined ensemble will envelop you in the sounds of Shostakovich’s Symphony No.4. The composer declared his work be a product of his “great thoughts and great passions”. So great were those passions that his symphony inspired both awe and controversy\, delaying its premiere by more than two decades. It has survived many decades more. \nFinnish virtuoso and Artistic Director of the Australian National Academy of Music\, Paavali Jumppanen joins the Orchestra to perform Mozart’s gripping Piano Concerto No.20. Full of spellbinding theatrics\, Mozart’s masterpiece weaves breathtaking technical brilliance through stormy drama and tender lyricism. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 21 May 7:30 PM\n\n\nSaturday 23 May 7:30 PM\n\n\nRunning Time 2 hours (including interval \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard from $75.00; Concession* from $70.00; Child** from $20.00

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Beethoven\, Mozart & more!
DESCRIPTION:Are you ready for a whirlwind voyage through the history of Western music? Maybe you’ve never heard an orchestra\, and you’re after a jam-packed program to show you what it’s all about. Or perhaps you’re a masterful listener\, and your ears are your instruments. No matter where you’re coming from\, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is ready to take you on a tour through the ages. \nHaydn wrote La Passione during the ‘storm and stress’ period of German artistic expression. A century earlier\, Matthew Locke had composed The Tempest about Shakespeare’s furious sea storm. C.P.E. Bach built upon the foundations on which these emotionally charged works were created\, and his Sinfonia also offers the rare chance to hear the MSO play a period piece. It’s why we’ve invited early music expert Chad Kelly to conduct. Principal Horn Nicolas Fleury will feature as the starring soloist in Mozart’s Horn Concerto. These two artists were not born in Melbourne\, yet they’ve both chosen to make their homes here. Whether you live in the city or you’re travelling here\, we look forward to sharing this chock-full concert with you. \nMelbourne Symphony Orchestra\nChad Kelly conductor\nNicolas Fleury horn \nC.P.E. SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Mahler & Tchaikovsky featuring Sergei Nakariakov
DESCRIPTION:This performance is filled to the brim with musical highlights\, but it’s likely that your eyes darted straight to the word flugelhorn. ‘What in the world is that instrument\,’ you ask? Come and find out what it looks and sounds like when flugelhorn virtuoso Sergei Nakariakov performs his own special arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme. The music was originally composed for the cello\, making this performance sound like nothing you’ve ever heard. \nOur adventurous program continues with Mahler’s Symphony No.1 under the baton of Singaporean conductor Kahchun Wong. Nicknamed Titan\, the work contains everything from bird song references to the most unsettling version of Frère Jacques you could imagine. But perhaps the most daring piece of all will be the one at the very beginning: a new work from Andrew Aronowicz\, our Cybec Young Composer in Residence. Stake your claim as the first listener in the world to hear his fresh Australian music\, which we’re proud to have commissioned ourselves. \nAndrew Aronowicz^ The Erl-King*\nTchaikovsky Variations on a Rococo Theme for Flugelhorn\nMahler Symphony No.1 Titan \n^Cybec Young Composer in Residence\n*World Premiere of an MSO Commission \nThursday 16 April 2026 7:30pm at Hamer Hall\nFriday 17 April 2026 7:30pm at Hamer Hall Relaxed performance\nSaturday 18 April 2026 2:00pm at Hamer Hall\nDuration Approx. 2 hours including a 20-minute interval\nTickets: $20 – $139

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Also sprach Zarathustra
DESCRIPTION:Experience a program where historical breakthroughs meet raw\, physical sound. \n\n\n\n\nThe Melbourne Symphony Orchestra invites you to the Australian premiere of The Deciding Machine by Melody Eötvös. Composed in 2020\, this work marks a dual tribute to the centenary of women’s suffrage and the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth. The title honours Ada Lovelace\, the 19th-century visionary who wrote the world’s first computer algorithm. \nTo complement this tribute to innovation\, we are pairing the work with Beethoven’s only Violin Concerto\, featuring the brilliant Spanish violinist María Dueñas. While her recording with Deutsche Grammophon is stunning\, nothing compares to the electricity of hearing her play it live. \nThe evening reaches its peak with a work designed to be felt as much as heard. If you’ve ever been awestruck by the bold horn calls and thunderous timpani of 2001: A Space Odyssey\, this is your chance to experiencing the feeling of that music resonating through your entire body. \nUnder the baton of Chief Conductor Jaime Martín\, Strauss’ heroic Also sprach Zarathustra will be brought to life in all its visceral glory. \n\n\n\n\nThursday 12 Mar 7:30 PM\n\n\nSaturday 14 Mar 2:00 PM\n\n\n Running Time 1 hour 50 minutes\n\n\n\n\n\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard from $75.00; Concession* from $70.00; Child**from $20.00
