SUMMARY:ANAM Harmonies Du Soir. French chamber music festival: Versailles – Centre Pompidou – Notre-Dame
DESCRIPTION:Harmonies Du Soir. A festival of French chamber music. A beautiful way to bring the year together. \nThis concert moves through three symbolic landmarks of French culture and the historical turning points surrounding each one. We work backwards in time from the exposed experimentalism of the Centre Pompidou and Pierre Boulez’s grand vision of modernism spilling out of IRCAM\, hearing the bold contemporary voices of Thierry Escaich and Clara Maïda. Slipping back in time to the splendour of the seventeenth-century Court of Versailles\, we hear Jean-Baptiste Lully crafting what a French sound should be under the eye and tastes of Louis XIV. And finally to the eternal Notre-Dame\, standing for nearly nine hundred years through fire and famine\, wherein echoes the sacred and secular traditions of the French Baroque in works by Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre\, Jean-Marie Leclair and François Couperin.\n\nJean-Marie LECLAIR Trio Sonata op. 2 no 8\nPierre BOULEZ Sonatine\nThierry ESCAICH Magic Circus\nFrançois COUPERIN Pieces de Clavecin (selection)\nÉlisabeth Jacquet DE LA GUERRE Trio Sonata\nJean-Baptiste LULLY arr. SUMMARY:ANAM Harmonies Du Soir. A festival of French chamber music: In Search of Lost Time
DESCRIPTION:Harmonies Du Soir. A festival of French chamber music. A beautiful way to bring the year together.\nCould the Adagio of Gabriel Fauré’s first piano quartet have inspired the Vinteuil’s fictional sonata\, the “little phrase” of Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time? In the novel\, the sonata marks the deepening love between Swann and Odette before twisting into a motif for the heartache of their separation.  Fauré himself was grieving after the end of his engagement to Marianne Viardot\, and pianist Marguerite Long later recalled being unable to hide her tears when performing the quartet while Fauré quietly turned pages for her. Around this emotional core are a triptych of late nineteenth century works by Fauré’s lesser-known contemporaries. Louise Farrenc’s Nonet brings together a wind quintet and a string quartet in a four-movement design that follows classical forms while giving each instrument an equal role. Mel Bonis’s Scènes de la forêt offers a sequence of short\, nature-themed pieces that evoke quiet woodland scenes. Pauline Garcia –Viardot\, singer\, pianist\, composer and sister of Fauré’s former fiancée\, adds a different intimacy with the salon elegance of her Romance and the lively Tarantella from Six Morceaux.  \nLouise FARRENC Nonet\nMélanie Hélène BONIS Scènes de la forêt\nPauline GARCIA-VIARDOT Romance and Tarantella from Six Morceaux\nGabriel FAURÉ Piano Quartet No. 1 in C Minor \nANAM Musicians \nFriday 28 Nov 2025\, 7PM     Approximate duration: 1hour 30 minutes\n \nAbbotsford Convent\, Rosina Auditorium\, 1 St Heliers St\, ABBOTSFORD VIC \nTICKETS: A Little Extra $60.00; Standard $40.00; A Little Less $20.00\nCompanion Card Holder $0.00 \nBar du Soir\nFriday 28 November\, 4pm – 7pm\nBetween performances on Friday evening find a selection of refreshments available to purchase at Bar du Soir in The Oratory. \nLooking for dinner on the night?\nKappaya\, Japanese Soul Cafe\, have kindly extended their hours for the evening until 6pm. SUMMARY:ANAM Harmonies Du Soir: Poème
DESCRIPTION:Harmonies Du Soir. A festival of French chamber music. A beautiful way to bring the year together. \nTwo young artists\, one a painter and one a musician\, both in love with the same woman\, compelled and tormented by a single violin melody. It’s no wonder that this story\, from Ivan Turgenev’s novella Le Chant de l’amour triomphant (‘The Song of Triumphant Love’)\, provided inspiration for Ernest Chausson’s haunting Poème\, with the violin soloist echoing the novella’s recurring theme. His earlier Concert for violin\, piano and string quintet exists in a similar emotive world\, blending chamber intimacy with symphonic scale\, a balance noted by critics at its 1892 premiere. \nErnest CHAUSSON \nPoème\, op 25\nConcert\, op. 21 \nANAM Musicians \nANAM Musicians \nFriday 28 Nov 2025\, 3PM     Approximate duration: 1 hour\n \nAbbotsford Convent\, Rosina Auditorium\, 1 St Heliers St\, ABBOTSFORD VIC \nTICKETS: A Little Extra $60.00; Standard $40.00; A Little Less $20.00\nCompanion Card Holder $0.00 \nBar du Soir\nFriday 28 November\, 4pm – 7pm\nBetween performances on Friday evening find a selection of refreshments available to purchase at Bar du Soir in The Oratory. \nLooking for dinner on the night?\nKappaya\, Japanese Soul Cafe\, have kindly extended their hours for the evening until 6pm. SUMMARY:ANAM Concerto Competition (Round 2 Thursday)
DESCRIPTION:The ANAM Concerto Competition is an essential part of the performance training. It helps the musicians gain valuable experience and a deeper understanding of what it takes to perform solo with an orchestra. The competition starts in Semester One\, where interested musicians record a 20-minute excerpt of a concerto or significant solo work of their choice. These recordings are then reviewed by an expert panel\, who select the best performances to move on to the second round. \nThe musicians who progressed to the second round are competing to be one of the three finalists who will get the exciting opportunity to perform with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra later in the year. \nFor this performance you can pay what you wish to attend. Not sure where to start? Feel free to nominate your own price as you wish. All ticket revenue contributes to ANAM’s ability to provide exceptional training for our young musicians and to present public performances throughout the year. If you are an ANAMate\, please consider this ticket complimentary as part of your membership. \n1pm\nGordon JACOB Concerto for Flute No. 1\nMaria Zhdanovich (SA) flute\nLeigh Harrold (ANAM Associate Faculty) piano \nCarl NIELSEN Violin Concerto op.33\nTheonie Wang (QLD) violin\nAidan Boase (ANAM Associate Faculty) piano \nBernhard Henrik CRUSELL Concertino for Bassoon and Orchestra in B Major\nWilliam Hanna (VIC) bassoon\nLeigh Harrold (ANAM Associate Faculty) piano \n3pm\nWolfgang Amadeus MOZART  Piano Concerto No. 14 in E-flat Major\, K. 449\nTimothy O’Malley (VIC) piano\nLeigh Harrold (ANAM Associate Faculty) piano \nWolfgang Amadeus MOZART Concerto for Clarinet in A major\, K. 622\nGeorgia White (VIC) clarinet\nLeigh Harrold (ANAM Associate Faculty) piano \nThursday 28 Aug 2025\, 1PM\nAbbotsford Convent\, Rosina Auditorium\, 1 St Heliers St \nTICKETS: Pay What You Wish (min. $0) $0.00\nANAMates Free $0.00

SUMMARY:ANAM at the Convent: Genesis Baroque with Sara Macliver
DESCRIPTION:“ANAM’s extraordinary young musicians display such verve and curiosity\, and I’m truly excited to be bringing Genesis Baroque’s specialists to ANAM to delve into the incredibly colourful\, raw\, and expressive sound world of period instrument performance. This diverse program of 18th Century Viennese repertoire is such fertile ground for exploring music through the vibrant\, deeply human lens of historically informed performance practice.”\n– Jennifer Kirsner\, Artistic Director of Genesis Baroque. \nGenesis Baroque\, known for their historically-informed performances of Baroque music\, will be joined by soprano Sara Macliver to lead ANAM musicians. \nSara’s residency will expose ANAM musicians to period instruments and playing techniques that were characteristic of the Baroque Period. String players will experience the difference in sound in gut strings and historical bows. Brass players will encounter the world of natural horns and trumpets. Woodwind\, keyboard and percussion musicians will encounter their instrumental ancestors and their associated playing techniques. \nJoin us at interval in the Rosina Courtyard for a complimentary glass of mulled wine. \nNicola PORPORA Polifemo (excerpts)\nMarianna MARTINES Cantata Berenice\, ah che fai?\nJoseph HAYDN Symphony No. 19 in D Major\nHAYDN L’Isola Disabitata (excerpts)      \nCarl Ditters von DITTERSDORF Symphony No. 1 in C Major\, Die vier Weltalter (‘The Four Ages of the World’) \nSara Macliver soprano\nGenesis Baroque\nANAM Musicians \nSat 10 May 2025\, 7PM\nAbbotsford Convent\, Rosina Auditorium\, 1 St Heliers St \nTICKETS: A Little Extra $60.00; Standard $40.00; A Little Less $20.00

SUMMARY:ANAM at the Convent: Boulez Rules
DESCRIPTION:Boulez’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of the traditional concert experience and his fierce advocacy for the avant-garde marked him as a pivotal figure in the 20th-century music scene. He was never content with the status quo\, always seeking to explore new territory\, and in doing so\, he left an indelible mark on music history. \nThis series includes a whole evening of concerts dedicated to Boulez’s music. His compositions are notoriously difficult—demanding on both the performer and the listener—but they are also incredibly rewarding. There’s a kind of beauty in the challenge they present\, a sense of accomplishment that comes from grappling with the complex structures and ideas that underpin his music. For the ANAM musicians\, approaching the huge mountains of works such as the Notations\, Sonatine for flute and piano and Piano Sonata No. 2 is not only a technical feat but a rite of passage into the world of contemporary classical music. \nBe sure to also join us in the ‘Boulez Bar’ between concerts to experience a delicious selection of drinks\, to view a special screening of director Reiner Moritz’s profile of the great composer and to hear a Q&A with musicians. \nFri 11 April 2025\, 6PM\, 8PM\, 10PM\nAbbotsford Convent\, Rosina Auditorium\, 1 St Heliers St ABBOTSFORD VIC \nView Map \nTICKETS: A Little Extra $60.00; Standard $40.00; A Little Less $20.00Purchase tickets to all three individual performances Boulez Rules! concerts and receive 30% off the total price. \nConcert 1: 6pm \nMélange – a community of innovation\nPierre BOULEZ Initiale\nEvan J LAWSON Echoes from the Labyrinth\nPierre BOULEZ Messagesquisse\nChristine MCCOMBE Five Pieces for Wind Quintet\nPierre BOULEZ Sonatine for flute and piano \nANAM Musicians\nFabian Russell conductor  \nBOOK NOW \nConcert 2: 8pm\n\nSur Incises – an explosion of sonorities\nHelen GIFFORD Celebration of the Apsaras\nPierre BOULEZ Sur Incises \nFabian Russell conductor\nMarshall McGuire harp\nMelina van Leeuwen (alum 2014) harp\nJessica Fotinos (alum 2012) harp\nPaavali Jumppanen (ANAM Artistic Director) piano\nTimothy Young (Associate Faculty) piano\nANAM Musicians\n\nBOOK NOW \nConcert 3: 10pm\n\nThe Power of Idea – Boulez at the piano\nFrederic CHOPIN Nocturne in D flat\nPierre BOULEZ 12 Notations\nPierre BOULEZ Piano Sonata No. 3\, Formant 3\nFrederic CHOPIN Nocturne in C Minor\, op.48 no. 1\nPierre BOULEZ Piano Sonata No. 2\n \nANAM pianos\nPaavali Jumppanen (ANAM Artistic Director)\n \nBOOK NOW \n\n\n\n\nBECOME AN ANAMATE AND GET MATES RATES\n\n\nLEARN MORE\n\n\n\nFor this event\, tickets booked in advance are offered on a “pay what you wish” basis. SUMMARY:Music In The Round
DESCRIPTION:A favourite on the annual classical music calendar\, Music in the Round returns to Abbotsford Convent on Sunday 8 September\, with a day-long program of renowned musicians performing intimate concerts in stunning heritage surrounds. For the first time this year\, audiences can experience classical music in the North Magdalen Laundry\, an evocative new venue laden with history. \nPresented by the Abbotsford Convent Foundation with Artistic Director Chris Howlett\, Music in the Round delivers a fresh and exciting mix of exceptional performers and repertoires that span the past 300 years – from classics like Beethoven\, to some of Australia’s leading female composers. \nHowlett said this year’s program features much-loved Australian artists alongside rising stars of the classical music scene. Artists include globe-trotting pianist Aura Go\, chamber music group Ensemble Liaison\, soprano singer Jacqueline Porter and internationally renowned pianist Ian Munro\, accordion virtuoso James Crabb\, and 13-year-old violin prodigy Edward Walton with Melbourne pianist Laurence Matheson. Cellist Chris Howlett will also be performing alongside award-winning violinist Elizabeth Sellars and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra violist Chris Cartlidge.  \n“Music in the Round celebrates the amazing artistry that we have in Australia – both performers and composers. The program features some fabulous Australian female composers including Elena Kats-Chernin\, Liza Lim and Miriam Hyde\, as well as extraordinary young violinist Edward Walton\,” Chris Howlett said. \n“This year\, Edward was awarded first prize at the Medallion International Concerto Competition (Atlanta\, USA); first prize at the Grand Prize Virtuoso International Music Competition (London); and Premier Grand Prix at the Concours Jeunes Artistes des Musicales du Centre (France). We are thrilled that Edward will be joining us for Music in the Round as our Emerging Artist for 2019.” \nEdward Walton will be joined on stage by rising star pianist Laurence Matheson\, who has been a mentor and pianist for many of Australia’s top young violinists and performs regularly as a chamber musician with leading Australian artists. Following Matheson’s crowd-pleasing performance with Christian Li at last year’s Music in the Round\, the young artist session is set to be a program highlight again in 2019. \nAbbotsford Convent Foundation CEO Collette Brennan said the event is an accessible way for audiences to experience classical music in non-traditional spaces. \n“First launched in 1972\, Music in the Round is now the flagship program of our Convent Live series\, complementing thousands of events held annually at the Convent. Each September\, Music in the Round brings new and returning talent to our historic venues; it is a day unlike any other\, a tailored experience that continues to surprise and delight audiences. We can’t wait to share this exciting program of classical music with lovers of the genre.” \nAttendees can tailor the experience to their tastes\, with two of the day’s four sessions offering alternate options. All packages include a grazing-style luncheon\, morning tea and afternoon tea by the Convent Bakery\, as well as complimentary tea and coffee throughout the day.
