SUMMARY:Zelman Symphony - Between Two Worlds
DESCRIPTION:Between Two Worlds\nTchaikovsky – Romeo & Juliet Fantasy Overture\nProkofiev – Violin Concerto no.1\nDvořák – Symphony no.9 From the New World\n\n\n\nRick Prakhoff – conductor\nJessica Zuk – conductor; Sophia Kirsanova – violin \nWe open 2026 with a concert exploring many worlds. Is it the world of romanticism or modernism? Is it the old world or the new world? Or is it fact or fiction? You can choose.\nTchaikovsky’s Fantasy Overture immerses us in the passionate love\, violent feuding and heart-wrenching despair of Shakespeare’s classic tale\, Romeo and Juliet.\nProkofiev shows his contemplative\, playful and occasionally spiky styles with his wonderful first violin concerto\, to be performed by soloist Sophia Kirsanova\, recently appointed Associate Principal Second Violin at Orchestra Victoria.\nAnd to close\, Dvořák’s well-loved Symphony No. 9 evokes North American spirituals while remaining deeply rooted in lively Czech musical traditions. \nSunday 15 March 2026 – 2:30 pm \n\n\nJames Tatoulis Auditorium\, Methodist Ladies’ College\, 207 Barkers Road \nTICKETS: Adult $51.00; Concession $44.00; Pensioners\, Seniors card holders; Youth and Students $20.00 \n\n\n\nAge 16 to 24 and Full-Time students; Children $10.00 Under 16

SUMMARY:Zelman Symphony: Smyth\, Beethoven and Shostakovich
DESCRIPTION:Smyth\, Beethoven and Shostakovich: Zelman’s 2025 season starts with a bang! \nZelman Symphony’s 2025 season opens with a program full of emotion and drama. Ethyl Smyth’s Overture to The Wreckers introduces the opera’s central themes of moral conflict\, betrayal and the clash between personal desires and collective duty. \nFeaturing our soloist Kristian Chong\, Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto is full of dramatic contrasts\, combining intense\, heroic themes with lyrical moments. Its powerful\, virtuosic piano part and rich orchestration showcase Beethoven’s innovation. \nOur concert concludes with Shostakovich’s Symphony no. 5. Composed at the height of Stalin’s purge\, it blends emotional depth and formal structure\, reflecting personal struggle under Stalin’s regime. It’s both a triumphant and complex work\, symbolising resilience and artistic survival. \nKristian Chong | Piano; Rick Prakhoff | Conductor \nEthyl Smyth | Overture to The Wreckers\nBeethoven | Piano Concerto no. 3\nShostakovich | Symphony no. 5

SUMMARY:Winter Daydreams
DESCRIPTION:Zelman Symphony begins its 2016 season with a spectacular combination of Tchaikovsky Firsts. His thrilling first piano concerto\, once considered “unplayable”\, sits alongside his beautiful\, evocative and exciting first symphony. \nTchaikovsky’s first piano concerto is amongst the best known of all piano concertos and one of his most popular works. Hoang Pham\, one of Australia’s most exciting young musicians\,  plays the concerto he performed so brilliantly to win the 2013 Symphony Australia Young Performer of the Year Award. \nTchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 1\, Winter Daydreams\, is his earliest notable composition – in 1883\, he wrote that “although it is in many ways very immature\, yet fundamentally it has more substance and is better than many of my other more mature works.” \nMark Shiell will present a pre-concert talk in the auditorium commencing 7.30pm. \n\n\n\n\n
