SUMMARY:Zelman Symphony Orchestra: Between two worlds
DESCRIPTION:We open 2026 with a concert exploring many worlds. \nIs it the world of romanticism or modernism? Is it the old world or the new world? Or is it fact or fiction? You can choose. \nTchaikovsky’s Fantasy Overture immerses us in the passionate love\, violent feuding and heart-wrenching despair of Shakespeare’s classic tale\, Romeo and Juliet. \nProkofiev shows his contemplative\, playful and occasionally spiky styles with his wonderful first violin concerto\, to be performed by soloist Sophia Kirsanova\, recently appointed Associate Principal Second Violin at Orchestra Victoria. \nAnd to close\, Dvořák’s well-loved Symphony No. 9 evokes North American spirituals while remaining deeply rooted in lively Czech musical traditions. \nEnjoy a Sunday afternoon of great music! \nTICKETS: Adult $51.00; Concession $44.00 (Pensioners\, Seniors card holders) \nYouth and Students $20.00 (Age 16 to 24 and Full-Time students) \n\n\nChildren $10.00 (Under 16)

SUMMARY:Elgar's Cello Concerto - Zelman Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Zelman Symphony Orchestra’s final concert for 2025. \nArguably the most famous of all works for the cello\, Elgar’s Cello Concerto was composed following the First World War. Richard Narroway joins Zelman Symphony for this deeply introspective and emotional work\, its somber\, melancholic tone reflecting the period’s sense of loss. \nBefore the concerto\, we present Faust Overture\, a work by another neglected female composer\, Emilie Mayer. Inspired by Goethe’s play\, this dramatic concert overture has a sinister opening which ultimately leads to a triumphant ending. \nOur season concludes with Brahms’ Symphony no. 3. Emotionally charged\, it weaves melancholy\, introspection and lyrical beauty throughout its movements. The symphony’s rich orchestration reflects deep emotional complexity\, while the third movement’s serene\, wistful theme evokes a sense of quiet longing and inner reflection.

SUMMARY:End Games
DESCRIPTION:In our last concert for 2018\, we feature the culmination of Germanic Classical and Romantic expression with Haydn’s and Brahms’ last symphonies and Strauss’ Four Last Songs\, each one a masterwork in its own right. \nWe are thrilled to present expatriate Australian soprano Miriam Gordon-Stewart\, an acclaimed Strauss and Wagner interpreter. She has sung in major opera houses in Hamburg\, Berlin\, Paris and Sydney and at the Bayreuth Festival. \nHaydn’s final symphony\, the London\, was composed while he was living in the British capital. And Brahms’ monumental Fourth Symphony is acknowledged as one of the most masterful examples of this form. \n  \nProgram: \nHaydn – Symphony No.104 London\nStrauss – Four Last Songs\nBrahms – Symphony No.4

SUMMARY:Northern Lights
DESCRIPTION:This concert commemorates the struggles of two northern European nations. We begin with Finlandia\, Sibelius’ patriotic piece which reflects the Finnish people’s fight for freedom from the Russians and is deeply etched in the Finnish psyche. Sibelius’ Karelia Suite follows; composed just a few years earlier\, it remains one of his most popular works. \nThe remainder of the concert is Russian. We are privileged to have Svetlana Bogosavljevic\, Ensemble Liaison’s charismatic cellist\, as soloist for Tchaikovsky’s virtuosic and graceful Variations on a Rococo Theme. We end this concert with Tchaikovsky’s turbulent and colourful 4th Symphony\, considered by many as his best. \nProgram: \nSibelius – Finlandia\nSibelius – Karelia Suite\nTchaikovsky – Variations on a Rococo Theme\nTchaikovsky – Symphony No.4 \n

SUMMARY:Zelman Symphony Orchestra: Babi Yar
DESCRIPTION:Experience the delights of the Elena Kats-Chernin Flute Concerto and Shostakovich’s darkly evocative Symphony No.13\, Babi Yar. \nYevgeny Yevtushenko’s famous poem\, Babi Yar\, exposed the massacres by the Nazis of over 110\,000 people at Babi Yar\, near Kiev\, during WWII. It denounced anti-Semitism and protested against the then Soviet Government’s refusal to build a memorial. Dmitri Shostakovich set this poem to music in his 13th Symphony\, Babi Yar\, which will be performed by bass-baritone Adrian Tamburini accompanied by a large orchestra and a 200-voice male chorus. It will be the centrepiece of this concert commemorating the 75th anniversary of these horrendous events at Babi Yar. \nThe strongly emotive yet delightfully melodic Elena Kats-Chernin Flute Concerto\, Night and Now\, references Elena’s early years in Soviet-era Russia. It was composed for leading Australian flautist Sally Walker\, and premiered in Victoria by Zelman Symphony to great acclaim in 2015. Zelman Symphony is proud to be able to bring this beautiful work to the Hamer Hall stage.

SUMMARY:Scandinavian Masterpieces: Zelman Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Grieg and Sibelius are the two greatest exponents of Scandinavian music\, and we have pleasure in presenting their most popular and well-loved works. \nGrieg’s Peer Gynt Suite and Piano Concerto are both heavily influenced by Norwegian folk songs and dance. We welcome one of Australia’s’ foremost pianists\, Stefan Cassomenos\, who will delight you as his fingers dance across the keyboard in the Piano Concerto. \nABC FM lists Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 in the top 10 of the 100 favourite classical works of all time! This symphony has more of a nationalistic character and will provide a triumphal conclusion to the concert. \nMark Shiell will present a pre-concert talk in the auditorium commencing 7.30pm. \nThe concert will also feature the world premiere of a new work from the Zelman Symphony / Melbourne University Emerging Composer of 2016. \nProgram: \nGrieg – Peer Gynt Suite No. 1\nWorld Premiere of a New Work\nGrieg – Piano Concerto in A minor\nSibelius – Symphony No. 2
