SUMMARY:Zelman Symphony: Mozart\, Shostakovich and Sibelius
DESCRIPTION:Mozart\, Shostakovich and Sibelius\nProgram\n\nMozart – Piano Concerto No.20 in D minor K.466 \nShostakovich – Piano Concerto No 2 in F major Op. 102 \nSibelius – Symphony No. 5 in E Flat Op. 82 \nArtists\n\nRick Prakhoff – conductor \nKristian Chong – piano \n\nKristian Chong\, one of Australia’s foremost concert pianists\, plays not one but two famous piano concertos in this concert. Beethoven loved Mozart Piano Concerto No 20 and played it often in his performances. This will be followed by Shostakovich’s uncharacteristically cheerful 2nd Piano Concerto\, which he composed for the 19th birthday of his accomplished pianist son\, Maxim. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe  concert ends with Sibelius’ Symphony No. 5. This was commissioned by the Finnish Government to mark the composer’s 50th birthday\, which was declared a national holiday in his honour. \n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Zelman Symphony Orchestra: Sibelius and Elgar
DESCRIPTION:In this concert\, we feature two works from the turn of the 20th century. \nSibelius’s only concerto will be performed by violinist Ji Won Kim who received the ABC Young Performers Award in 2009\, playing this very concerto. Ji Won has performed extensively in Australia\, Asia and Europe and we welcome her back after fabulous concerts with us in 2013 and 2014. \nEnigma Variations established Elgar’s international reputation. It is a unique work where each variation reflects the character of a close acquaintance\, ending in a grand variation representing Elgar himself. \nProgram:\nMendelssohn – Overture: Ruy Blas\nSibelius – Violin Concerto\nElgar – Enigma Variations

SUMMARY:Bottesini Magic
DESCRIPTION:Zelman Symphony Concert \nProgram\nTchaikovsky – The Tempest Fantasy Overture\nBottesini – Double Bass Concerto No. 2 in B minor\nBrahms – Symphony No. 2 \nArtists\nPhoebe Russell – Double Bass\nMark Shiell – Conductor \nAbout the Concert\nBottesini was considered the Paganini of the Double Bass\, developing a formidable technique for the instrument and composing numerous solo works. We are thrilled to welcome back the equally virtuosic Phoebe Russell to play his second concerto. In 2010\, Phoebe was Zelman Symphony’s youngest section leader and youngest invited soloist ever. She has since embarked on a stellar career so far culminating in being a member of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Academy\, and as a frequent casual player with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and numerous other European orchestras – light years from her start in Zelman Symphony! \nThe concert opens with Tchaikovsky’s The Tempest Fantasy Overture which is based on the Shakespearian play\, and closes with Brahms’ Symphony No. 2\, a contemplative and exuberant work which he wrote in less than a year\, a distinct contrast with the 15 years he took to write his first symphony! \nMark Shiell will present a pre-concert talk in the auditorium commencing 7.30pm.

SUMMARY:Zelman Symphony Orchestra: Young Romantics
DESCRIPTION:Romanticism and its focus on the individual artist as a creative hero emerged through the blinding brilliance of the Beethoven Symphonies. During the flowering of the Romantic Period\, many creative geniuses stepped into Beethoven’s very large shoes – including Mendelssohn. \nHis genius is featured in this concert with the darkly beautiful Hebrides overture and the E minor violin concerto\, one of the most popular violin concertos of all time\, played by Kathryn Taylor. Joseph Joachim\, the great violinist and pupil of Mendelssohn\, when speaking of the four great German Violin Concertos (Beethoven\, Brahms\, Bruch and Mendelssohn) said that “… but the dearest of them all\, the heart’s jewel\, is the Mendelssohn.” \nWe end the concert with Beethoven’s Symphony No.7 which\, according to Beethoven’s letters\, he considered one of his greatest works. \nMark Shiell will present a pre-concert talk in the auditorium commencing 7.30pm. \nProgram: \nMendelssohn – Hebrides Overture\nMendelssohn – Violin Concerto\nBeethoven – Symphony No. 7
