SUMMARY:Zelman Symphony: Horns a Plenty
DESCRIPTION:Rick Prakhoff – conductor \nNicolas Fleury – horn \nRachel Shaw – horn \n\n\nBeethoven – Fidelio Op. 72: Overture \nSutherland – Haunted Hills \nLyon – Opal: Double Concerto for Horns and Orchestra \nBrahms – Symphony No. 1 in C minor Op. 68 \n\n\nThe concert will open with the overture to Beethoven’s only opera\, Fidelio (originally Leonore\, or The Triumph of Marital Love)\, the final of four different overtures written over almost a decade. This will be followed by Haunted Hills\, a symphonic poem composed in 1950 by one of Australia’s best-known composers\, Margaret Sutherland AO OBE. \nOpal: Double Concerto for Horns and Orchestra was premiered in 2021 by the MSO’s Nicolas Fleury and Rachel Shaw. We’re delighted to both present this work with the same soloists and have an opportunity to once again perform a work by May Lyon. As the 2016 Zelman Symphony / University of Melbourne Emerging Composer\, May wrote Nornir Concerto for Viola to Violin. Featuring violinist and violist Kat Tsyrlin\, its theme was “The Three Norns” (female goddesses) from Norse mythology. \nThe night will conclude with Brahms’ acclaimed First Symphony. In 1876\, after 21 years and numerous drafts\, Brahms proclaimed it was finally a worthy successor to Beethoven’s symphonies.

SUMMARY:American Story: Zelman Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:This concert will feature some of the best known American music of the 20th Century from the serious to the whimsical. We will pay homage to some of America’s most iconic composers\, Copland\, Bernstein and Gershwin\, who\, as American music came of age\, were influenced both by the country’s unique history and the infectious popularity of jazz. \nCopland’s Concerto for Clarinet was composed for Benny Goodman who gave the premiere in 1950 – what a star to be following! To play this evocative work\, we welcome Philip Arkinstall\, Associate Principal Clarinet with the MSO. \nGeorge Gershwin composed his Cuban Overture in 1932 after holidaying there. You will recognise many Caribbean rhythms and native Cuban percussion themes featured in this overture. \nAnd of course\, we all know and love Porgy and Bess and West Side Story. We will revel in the American dream\, a culture of great Musicals and music that we can now enjoy outside the theatre. \nMark Shiell will present a pre-concert talk in the auditorium commencing 7.30pm. \nProgram: \nCopland – Fanfare for the Common Man\nGershwin arr Bennett – Porgy and Bess:Symphonic Picture\nCopland – Concerto for Clarinet\nGershwin – Cuban Overture\nBernstein – West Side Story: Symphonic Dances
