DESCRIPTION:Zelman Memorial Symphony Orchestra – 90th Birthday Concert \nIt is almost exactly 90 years since the first Zelman Memorial Symphony Orchestra concert was given in the Melbourne Town Hall on 30 September 1933. Ten years ago\, to mark the 80th birthday of the Zelman Memorial Symphony Orchestra\, the decision was made to present a performance of the monumental Eighth Symphony of Gustav Mahler\, the “Symphony of a Thousand”. \nFor this\, the 90th anniversary\, the orchestra presents his more youthful\, but perhaps even more ecstatic\, Second Symphony. Set for soprano and mezzo-soprano soloists\, mixed voice chorus and large orchestra (quadruple wind\, organ\, harps and additional off-stage trumpets\, horns and percussion)\, Mahler’s Second Symphony demands very spacious acoustics such as those of the Melbourne Town Hall. DESCRIPTION:Melbourne Bach Choir and Zelman Memorial Symphony Orchestra are proud to bring you the Verdi Requiem with a cast of four superb Australian soloists under the baton of Rick Prakhoff. \nSoprano Helena Dix recently made her New York Metropolitan Opera debut. Last November she sang the Verdi Requiem with London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. Jacqueline Dark is a multiple Helpmann and Green Room Award- winning mezzo-soprano. Australian tenor Paul O’Neill has\, over the past decade\, forged a compelling international career in opera houses and concert halls throughout Europe and Australasia. Adrian Tamburini is well-known to Zelman Symphony audiences having sung in Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 13\, Babi Yar. \nOften described as Verdi’s greatest opera\, his Requiem is an expansive yet tightly knit masterpiece of monumental drama and intense emotion.
