SUMMARY:Victorian Opera presents: The Sleeping Beauty
DESCRIPTION:The transformative power of love takes centre stage as a cursed Princess awakens from an eternal sleep in a retelling of Perrault’s classic with fairies\, fantasy and a cast of puppets. Italian composer Ottorino Respighi’s 1922 reimagining of The Sleeping Beauty is given new life in an unforgettable production. \nThis opera was created specifically for one of Italy’s leading puppetry theatres in the early 20th century. Respighi’s production was a smash-hit and toured the world. The ageless appeal of this charming chamber opera will be reawakened by the theatrical genius of director Nancy Black (Master Peter’s Puppet Show\, Four Saints in Three Acts) and production designer Joe Blanck. The Sleeping Beauty will feature an ensemble of exciting operatic talent lending voice to stunningly crafted puppets\, as Respighi had intended. \nConductor Phoebe Briggs\nDirector Nancy Black\nPuppet Design & Construction Joe Blanck\nCo-Set Designers Ben Cobham and Joe Blanck\nLighting Designer Phillip Lethlean\nChoreography Michelle Heaven \nArtists include Carlos E. Bàrcenas\, Kirilie Blythman\, Andrew Moran\nand Timothy Reynolds. \nVictorian Opera Chamber Orchestra

SUMMARY:Laughter and Tears
DESCRIPTION:Victorian Opera returns to The Palais following The Flying Dutchman (2015)\, bringing the breathtaking experience of large scale opera into the superb acoustics of this iconic theatre. \nIn Laughter\, the comical adventures of characters from the Commedia Dell’Arte unfold through a spellbinding mix of acrobatics and ancient Italian songs. Performers from Circus Oz join an ensemble of extraordinary singers to create a dream-like vision of 17th and 18th century theatre. \nIn Tears\, the lives of the performers from Laughter unravel through a dramatic retelling of Leoncavallo’s captivating tragedy I Pagliacci. Canio’s show-stopping aria ‘Vesti la giubba’ (‘Put on the costume’) has been immortalised by some of the world’s greatest singers. Now formidable Australian tenor Rosario La Spina gives new voice to Canio and Emma Pearson\, an Australian soprano taking Germany by storm\, returns to play the restless Nedda. Sung in Italian with English surtitles. \nLaughter and Tears is a co-production of Victorian Opera and State Opera of South Australia\, presented in association with Circus Oz. \n13\, 16\, 18 August 2016\, 7:30pm\nThe Palais \nTickets\n$50 – $130 Concessions available \nBooking\nvictorianopera.com.au\nTicketmaster 136 100

SUMMARY:The Pied Piper
DESCRIPTION:The town of Hamelin is plagued by rats. The rodents have been eating cheeses out of vats and making nests in men’s Sunday hats. The desperate Mayor turns to a mysterious fellow in a gypsy coat of red and yellow\, who with his magical charm rids the town of vermin. But\, when the greedy Mayor refuses to pay\, the townspeople are taught a lesson they will never forget. \nBased on The Pied Piper of Hamelin and Robert Browning’s classic poem\, this enchanting new family production with a surprise happy ending is told through song in traditional operatic format written by Artistic Director Richard Mills.
