SUMMARY:Victorian Opera: 5 Fridays in November
DESCRIPTION:Friday 1 November: What a year! \nJoin us for a concert of arias and songs\, familiar and not\, as 2024 Opera Prize winners Michaela Cadwgan and Douglas Kelly celebrate their year in residence with Victorian Opera. They will be accompanied by Victorian Opera Repetiteur\, Tom Griffiths. Tickets for this event include a complimentary wine and cheese reception prior to the start of  the event.  Buy now \nThe Opera Prize is generously supported by Dr Michael Stubbs & Malcolm Roberts\, and Mary Davidson & the family of the late Frederick R Davidson AM. \nFriday 8 November: Judy sings her songs of Stage and Screen \nDon’t miss this concert of Judy Garland’s most beloved songs\, including I Feel a Song Coming On\, Get Happy\, Smile\, Over the Rainbow\, On the Sunny Side of the Street\, I Can’t Give You Anything but Love\, Baby\, The Palace Medley from Carnegie Hall\, and many more. \nJudy Garland’s music will be performed by dramatic contralto Liane Keegan. All songs have been arranged by Stefan Cassomenos\, true to the phenomenal arrangements Judy was famous for. Buy now \nFriday 15 November: She\, Who Should Have Been A Queen \nWho is speaking up for the heroines of the great operatic canon? Antoinette Halloran (soprano) is reimagining these iconic characters with a contemporary feminist perspective\, often with humorous or profoundly moving results. \nAntoinette will explore their journeys through a series of poems she penned during the pandemic lockdowns. The poems are set to the contemporary compositions of Linda Kouvaras. Buy now \nFriday 22 November: Fellow Travelers \nThis performance will showcase selected scenes from Gregory Spear’s opera Fellow Travelers\, based on the 2007 novel by Thomas Mallon (and adapted into a mini series in 2023). \nFellow Travelers delves into a secret\, gay love affair between Hawkins Fuller and Tim Laughlin in Washington DC during the Lavender Scare in 1950s. Then\, Senator Joseph McCarthy’s relentless pursuit of suspected communists and gays within the US Government led to mass dismissals\, horrendous persecution and tragedy. \nThis concert will showcase duet scenes between the two lovers\, accompanied by Coady Green and Kevin Tamanini on the piano. It stars Boyd Owen (tenor) as Tim Laughlin and Adrian Tamburini (bass-baritone) as Hawkins Fuller. Buy now \nFriday 29 November: The Diary of One Who Disappeared \nLeoš Janáček’s quasi-operatic song-cycle takes place from midnight to midnight. It tells the captivating story of a village boy smitten with a girl. A glorious and grotesque\, dream-like melodrama\, this rarely-performed work for two soloists\, piano and small chorus is a must see. \nVictorian Opera’s performance stars Katherine McIndoe (soprano)\, Brenton Spiteri (tenor) and Alex Raineri (piano)\, with the Victorian Opera Youth Chorus Ensemble (VOYCE). DESCRIPTION:Victorian Opera continues its exploration of Richard Strauss in this concert of beautiful and deeply thoughtful ‘conversation piece for music’\, Capriccio\, conducted by the renowned Simone Young AM. \nThis final operatic masterpiece by Richard Strauss and Clemens Krauss from 1942 tells the story of Countess Madeleine who is being courted by two different men; Flamand the composer and Olivier the poet. SUMMARY:Victorian Opera: Cheremushki
DESCRIPTION:A housing crisis\, income inequality and the pitfalls of progress – who would have thought that a Russian operetta from 1958 would ring so true today? \n\n\n\n\nThis witty production transports visionary composer Dmitri Shostakovich’s score and Vladimir Mass and Mikhail Chervinsky’s sarcastically funny libretto from a Soviet-era Khrushchev-style apartment complex to contemporary Melbourne. But this operetta makes light work of heavy issues through its darkly comedic use of magic realism into everyday struggles with a truth-telling park bench\, a phone booth for the pure of heart and a garden where flowers bloom for good people and wither for bad. \nFeaturing our ‘VO Emerges’ cast\, this will be your chance to see the next generation showcase their talents and innovative perspectives on the challenges we still face in Melbourne today. So step into a world where social challenges are examined through a lens of comedy\, satire and magic. \n\n\n\nAge Suitability: This production is recommended for ages 15+.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday 22 Mar 7:30 PM; Thursday 23 Mar 7:30 PM; Friday 24 Mar 7:30 PM* Saturday 25 Mar 2:00 PM\, 7:30 PM\n\nRunning Time2 hours and 10 minutes (including one interval) \nTICKETS: $35 – $150  This performance is available as part of a subscription package.
See more information here Subscription Pricing: Adult $39.00 – $150.00; Concession $39.00 – $140.00; Senior $39.00 – $145.00; 30 years & under $30.00 \nSingle Tickets: Adult $35.00 – $120.00; Concession $35.00 – $112.00; Senior $35.00 – $116.00; 30 years & under $30.00; Children under 15 $30.00
