SUMMARY:Australian Chamber Orchestra: ACO Up Close: Shostakovich\, Silvestrov & Bach
DESCRIPTION:A deep exploration of the majesty and heartache of Shostakovich and Silvestrov chamber works\, set alongside the music of J.S. Bach.\nACO Principal Violin Satu Vänskä leads an ACO ensemble with pianist Konstantin Shamray in this moving exploration through music of majesty\, heartache\, and reflection. \nArvo Pärt called the Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov ‘one of the greatest composers of our time.’ Filled with longing and quiet contemplation\, Silvestrov’s music embraces a simplicity that is at once comforting and unexpected. In a world that runs at an ever-increasing pace\, it serves as a soothing antidote for our times. \nThe concert also features Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet\, a classic in 20th-century chamber music. Despite being composed in the shadow of World War II\, the quintet is imbued with purity and lyricism\, offering a glimpse of light amidst dark times. \nThe performance culminates in excerpts from Bach’s final masterpiece\, The Art of Fugue\, arranged for string quartet. This intricate work showcases Bach’s genius and serves as a testament to his enduring legacy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nMonday 25 August 2025 – 4:00pm\nMonday 25 August 2025 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval). Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $99; Under 35 $35 \nPlease note\, seating in the Primrose Potter Salon is General Admission.

SUMMARY:Australian Chamber Orchestra: Gershwin & Shostakovich
DESCRIPTION:A celebration of the power of music featuring Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No.1 with superstar pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk. \n\n\n\n\nThe Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO) is celebrating fifty years in 2025 and is one of the most acclaimed chamber orchestras in the world\, renowned for their inspired programming\, unrivalled virtuosity\, energy and individuality. Under the direction of Artistic Director Richard Tognetti\, they take audiences on an adventure to create truly transformative experiences. \nMusic is a powerful defence against darkness. Throughout history\, composers have responded to adversity time and time again by creating music full of hope. \nRichard Tognetti directs this profound program that features Ukrainian-born\, internationally renowned pianist\, Alexander Gavrylyuk. Gavrylyuk makes his ACO debut with Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Shostakovich’s witty\, irreverent Piano Concerto No.1\, with David Elton on trumpet. \nGershwin’s much-loved Rhapsody in Blue is a life-affirming explosion of jazz and joy\, an exultant celebration of difference and dynamism. It’s a stark contrast to Shostakovich’s intense and emotional Chamber Symphony\, dedicated to the victims of fascism and oppression. It tells a story of fear and melancholy but never loses hope. \nIn response\, the ACO have commissioned a new work from Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov\, known for his lyrical\, introspective and consoling style which he shares with his friend Arvo Pärt. This is a special piece\, in which the composer wrote while sheltering from war after escaping his native Kyiv. \nThis is music that stands with victims of injustice. It lights the darkness and celebrates human ingenuity and courage. \n\n\n\nSunday 10 August 2:30 PM\n\n\nMonday 11 August 7:30 PM\n\n\n Running Time Approximately 2 hours (including interval) \nHamer Hall \n\nTICKETS: Standard $59.00 – $167.00; Concession $59.00 – $145.00\n\n\nUnder 35 $35.00; Student $30.00; Group 8+ $86.00 – $134.00

SUMMARY:Australian Chamber Orchestra: ACO Unleashed
DESCRIPTION:ACO Unleashed is a thrilling celebration of the ACO at 50 — bold\, virtuosic and electrifying. \n\n\n\n\nCurated by Artistic Director Richard Tognetti\, this dynamic program showcases the extraordinary talent of ACO principals Helena Rathbone\, Satu Vänskä\, and Timo-Veikko Valve\, joined by the Orchestra’s newest member\, violinist Anna da Silva Chen. \nThe concert features classics by Bach\, Beethoven\, Schubert and Ravel\, alongside a deeply moving work by Finnish master Jaakko Kuusisto — all affirming the ACO’s “unwavering energy and maverick imagination” (The Times\, UK). \nNo celebration of the ACO would be complete without Bach. The concert begins with his Concerto for Three Violins in D Major\, featuring Helena Rathbone\, Satu Vänskä and Anna da Silva Chen in a radiant and intricate showcase. \nRavel’s Tzigane follows — fiery and virtuosic — led by Satu Vänskä\, in a performance that promises drama and exhilaration. \nBeethoven’s Serioso Quartet\, arranged for string orchestra by Richard Tognetti\, intensifies the original’s turbulence and brilliance\, while Schubert’s Quartettsatz offers a glimpse of his profound emotional range in just one movement. \nThe concert concludes with the Australian premiere of Jaakko Kuusisto’s Cello Concerto\, performed by Timo-Veikko Valve. Deeply personal and hauntingly beautiful\, it is Kuusisto’s final orchestral work — imbued with emotional resonance and tribute. A powerful finale to a concert that celebrates the ACO’s artistry at its most compelling. \n\n\n\n\nSunday 22 June 2:30 PM\n\n\nMonday 23 Jun 7:30 PM\n\n\n Running Time 2 hours (including interval) \nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard from $49.00; Concession from $49.00\n\n\nUnder 35 $35.00; Student $30.00; Group 8+ from $60.00\n\nConcession applies to Veterans’ Affairs pensioners\, Centrelink-issued Pension and Commonwealth Healthcare cardholders. SUMMARY:AUSTRALIAN CHAMBER ORCHESTRA: ABEL SELAOCOE
DESCRIPTION:The international cello sensation brings a kaleidoscope of rhythm and sound to his highly anticipated Australian debut.\nWhen Abel Selaocoe makes music\, he gathers together an unbelievable harmony of classical cello\, African traditions\, throat singing\, percussion\, and unbridled joy. He performs with equal parts grace and fire\, whether he’s directing his own compositions\, improvising\, or inhabiting Baroque music. Feeling him perform is a joyful surrender to his irresistible beat. Bringing the rhythm is Selaocoe’s regular collaborator\, percussionist Sidiki Dembélé. \nThe curiosity and calibre of the ACO is a perfect match for Selaocoe’s charisma\, as he makes his Australian debut performing his original works alongside a new commission from renowned Australian composer Nigel Westlake and excerpts from cellist and composer Giovanni Sollima’s electrifying double concerto When We Were Trees. \nSelaocoe’s rare affinity for the cello is the thread that draws together the musical worlds he inhabits\, as he explores and celebrates the sounds of the South African culture that made him. He’s now in demand all over the world\, making his mark on classical music by bringing his infectious exuberance and drive for innovation to orchestras and ensembles everywhere. \nAbel Selaocoe director and cello (Australian debut)\nSidiki Dembélé African percussion (Australian debut)\nHelena Rathbone lead violin\nTimo-Veikko Valve cello\nAustralian Chamber Orchestra \nProgram \nAbel Selaocoe Qhawe\, Tsepho\, Lerato\, Ka Bohaleng (Australian Premieres) \nGiovanni Benedetto Platti Cello Concerto in D\, WD650 (Australian Premiere) \nNigel Westlake New work (World Premiere) * \nIgor Stravinsky (arr. SUMMARY:Australian Chamber Orchestra – Tognetti. Mendelssohn. Bach
DESCRIPTION:Sparks fly and melodies soar when Richard Tognetti directs music close to the ACO’s heart.\nThe Australian Chamber Orchestra is one of the most acclaimed chamber orchestras in the world and is renowned for their inspired programming\, unrivalled virtuosity\, energy and individuality. Under the direction of Artistic Director Richard Tognetti\, they take audiences on the adventure to create truly transformative experiences. \nOne of the great prodigies\, Mendelssohn wrote his sunny Octet at just 16 years of age. It’s one of the most loved pieces of chamber music ever written and a favourite of the ACO. In their hands\, its youthful exuberance just about leaps off the stage. \nIf Mendelssohn is pleasure\, then Bach is worship. \nThat is an altar to which Richard Tognetti will return to again and again. His recordings of Bach’s violin music won three successive ARIA Awards. Live\, his interpretation of the great Violin Concerto in A minor is a powerful experience: intimate and electrifying. \nLike all the best performances\, this concert will remind you of why you love music. \n\nSaturday 7 & Monday 9 September 2024 7.30pm \n\nElisabeth Murdoch Hall\n\nDuration: 1 hour 40 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $150 ($139 Concession); A reserve $134 ($123 Concession); B reserve $114 ($104 Concession); C reserve $83 ($73 Concession); D reserve $49\nUnder $35; Student $25 \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Australian Chamber Orchestra – Tognetti. Mendelssohn. Bach
DESCRIPTION:Sparks fly and melodies soar when Richard Tognetti directs music close to the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s heart. \n\n\n\n\nMendelssohn’s music is pure pleasure. One of the great prodigies\, he wrote his sunny Octet at just 16 years of age. It’s one of the most loved pieces of chamber music ever written and a favourite of the ACO. In their hands\, its youthful exuberance just about leaps off the stage. \nMoving from one young genius to another: the ACO presents a new commission from trailblazing young composer Jakub Jankowski in his first work for string orchestra. Hailing from Adelaide\, he’s a fresh voice in classical music. Opening the program\, Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s pulsating octet Illumine makes a striking contrast with the Mendelssohn. \nIf Mendelssohn is pleasure\, then Bach is worship. \nBach sought God in his music and became like a god for musicians\, a touchstone to which all other music is compared. His music is filled with drama\, joy and remarkable discipline. Hearing it\, playing it\, is an act of worship. \n\nSunday 8 Sep 2:30 PM    Running Time 2 Hours\n\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\n\nTICKETS: $25 – $150

SUMMARY:Australian Chamber Orchestra: Silence & Rapture
DESCRIPTION:A mesmerising collaboration with Sydney Dance Company featuring countertenor Iestyn Davies and the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and Arvo Pärt. \nComposing three centuries apart\, Johann Sebastian Bach and Arvo Pärt’s timeless music speaks to the human soul. From rockstars and writers to artists and filmmakers\, these composers are revered by music lovers across genres and generations. The last time the Australian Chamber Orchestra performed their music together\, it was a sell-out. \nRichard Tognetti directs this mesmerising collaboration between the ACO and Sydney Dance Company that brings together music\, movement and evocative lighting to create something truly extraordinary. \nExpressing the luminous longing at the heart of this music is choreography from Rafael Bonachela\, Artistic Director Sydney Dance Company\, while Gramophone Award-winning countertenor Iestyn Davies\, whose performances have been described as “a pleasure that verges on the sublime” (The Guardian) makes his Australian debut\, bringing these stirring melodies to life. \nBach and Pärt’s music is rooted in human experience while reaching towards the divine. This program traces a profound journey through three Gardens at the heart of the Biblical narrative they both hold so close: from the hope and temptation of the Garden of Eden to the tragedy and passion of the Garden of Gethsemane\, ascending into the Garden of Heaven and\, at last\, the meditation of silence. Featuring Part’s Fratres and selections from Bach’s most loved cantatas\, orchestral and solo music\, this promises to be a season highlight and a deeply affirming experience. \nSunday 11 August 2:30 PM\nRunning Time: 2 Hours \nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \nTICKETS: $25 – $135

SUMMARY:Altstaedt Plays Haydn and Tchaikovsky
DESCRIPTION:The world-renowned cellist and master storyteller makes his ACO debut as soloist and guest director. \nWhen the cello sings\, we hear something akin to the human voice: sensuous\, rich\, profound. When Nicolas Altstaedt holds the bow\, the cello is all that and more\, becoming a master storyteller. \nIt’s been more than a decade since the young cellist burst onto the world stage as a BBC New Generation Artist\, with his unruly curls\, unorthodox concert attire and pure talent. Since then\, he’s piled up musical accolades from the stages of New York\, London and beyond. Now is your chance to see his Australian Chamber Orchestra debut as both director and soloist. \nHaydn’s Cello Concerto in C major is such an audience favourite\, it’s hard to believe it was nearly lost to history. Found in a Prague library just 60 years ago\, the score reveals Haydn’s gift for invention. For all his form and symmetry\, Haydn was a visionary\, breaking musical boundaries with each new work. Two centuries later\, his influence is still felt in the music of 20th-century masters Xenakis and Kurtág. \nTchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations hark back to the classical style of Haydn from a completely different musical world. These enchanting variations for cello and orchestra are by turns virtuosic and lyrical\, and will be performed in a new arrangement for cello and strings. \nThe spirit and jubilation of Haydn is matched by the thrilling energy and wistful defiance of Four Transylvanian Dances by the Hungarian-born Sándor Veress. Written as an ode to a home he could never return to\, they remind us that\, for all its Classical elegance\, Haydn’s music was steeped in the same folk-infused Hungarian rhythms. \nAltstaedt’s debut will showcase the many voices of his cello along with the vitality and dynamism of the ACO. This promises to be a very special collaboration. \nSunday 23 June 2:30 PM; Monday 24 June 7:30 PM\nRunning Time: 2 Hours \nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \nPrice range\nStandard $49.00 – $150.00\nConcession*$49.00 – $139.00\nUnder 35 (A-D Reserve)$35.00\nStudent (B Reserve only)$25.00\n*Concession include Veterans’ Affairs pensioners\, Centrelink-issued Pension and Commonwealth Healthcare cardholders.
