SUMMARY:Melba Hall Lunch Hour Concert Series: Trio Anima Mundi
DESCRIPTION:Trio Anima Mundi – Piano Trio Archaeology\nInternational award-winning ensemble Trio Anima Mundi present two dynamic works from their ongoing Piano Trio Archaeology findings. Rebecca Clarke’s Piano Trio (1921) is striking in its evocative harmonies and energetic rhythms. Carl Reissiger’s Op.25 Piano Trio is the first of 28 ‘jewel-like’ works he penned for this genre\, grand and spectacular in its virtuosic Romanticism. \nTrio Anima Mundi\nKenji Fujimura\, piano; Rochelle Ughetti\, violin; Noella Yan\, cello \nInternational award-winning Trio Anima Mundi is one of Australia’s best-known chamber groups. Founded in 2008 initially to give back to society through fundraising performance activities – and hence the name of the group – Trio Anima Mundi has expanded its scope to give back through other means\, such as the preservation of cultural heritage. It has become renowned for its ‘Piano Trio Archaeology’ – the unearthing and performing forgotten works – and presenting these ‘findings’ alongside masterpieces of the piano trio genre and freshly-minted contemporary compositions. \nPraised as a “trio of vitality\, charm and aplomb” (The Age)\, the Trio’s members – Kenji Fujimura (piano)\, Rochelle Ughetti (violin)\, and Noella Yan (cello) – are seasoned performers and have gained a reputation for their sumptuous sonorities\, immaculate ensemble\, and masterly interpretation. \nMonday\, 26 Feb 2024 1:10 PM – 2:00 PM AEDT \nMelba Hall\, University of Melbourne\, Parkville \nTICKETS: Free

SUMMARY:Faculty of Fine Arts and Music: The Magic Flute
DESCRIPTION:Die Zauberflöte ‘The Magic Flute’ (1791)\nComposed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder\nMusic arranged and directed from the keyboard by Donald Nicolson\nStage Direction by Jane Davidson\n\nThis perforamance is140 minutes including a 20 minute interval. Act One 55 mins\, Act Two 65 minutes.\nMozart’s Die Zauberflöte ‘The Magic Flute’ is replete with symbolism and ritual. It deals with themes of good vs evil\, enlightenment vs ignorance and champions truth above all. Sometimes\, it takes a while to uncover the truth\, and many characters are not as they first appear. \nThe princess Pamina has been abducted and her mother The Queen of the Night (famous for her coloratura aria) enlists Tamino to help her to reclaim her daughter. To aid him on his perilous journey\, he is given a magic flute and a companion named Papageno. Papageno is a very likeable bird-catcher who wants someone to love. Tamino\, Papageno\, and Pamina go through several trials to see if they are worthy to attain wisdom and knowledge. In a culmination of all the story lines\, Pamina and Tamino vanquish darkness in their final trial through fire and water\, Papageno meets his true love (Papagena)\, and a balance between light and darkness is restored in the land. \nThis amazing tale is being brought to life using multimedia in an exciting new arrangement by composer and keyboard player Donald Nicolson. This will be a show not to be missed. \nThe production is a collaboration between Master of Music (Opera Performance)\, Bachelor of Music (Voice)\, Master of Production (Stage)\, and Melbourne Conservatorium of Music orchestra students\, and draws on experienced alumna\, Shania Eliassen in the role of Queen of the Night. \nContent Note: This performance includes haze and smoke effects\, strobe lighting\, mild sexual content and a depiction of attempted suicide. \nWednesday December 6 until Saturday December 9\, 7:00pm to 10:00pm\n \nUnion Theatre\, Level 2\, Arts and Cultural Building \nTICKETS: $10 – $15

SUMMARY:The University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:The University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s third concert of the year takes us through works by Benjamin Britten\, Don Bank\, and Jean Sibelius.\nThe University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s third concert of the year begins with Benjamin Britten’s flamboyant showpiece\, The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra (Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Purcell) Op.34 from 1945. Although originally commissioned for a documentary film to introduce the instruments of the orchestra to children\, it has since become a staple of the orchestra concert repertoire\, with carefully crafted variations (all on a theme by Purcell) and a fiery and ingenious fugue to finish. \nThe Orchestra will then be joined by one of the talented Conservatorium staff members\, Carla Blackwood\, to perform Bank’s Horn Concerto from 1965. Banks studied at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and wrote this concerto for fellow Australian Barry Tuckwell whilst they were both living in London. Our concert will conclude with a performance of Sibelius’s glorious Symphony No.1 from 1899. \n\nSunday 14 August 2022 5pm; MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \n\n\nTICKETS: This event is free to attend however tickets are required. Currently sold out.

SUMMARY:Songmakers Australia: Schwanengesang
DESCRIPTION:Program\nFranz Schubert Schwanengesang D 957 \nSongmakers Australia \nSchubert’s last song cycle was published after his untimely death at the age of 31. It comprises songs by Ludwig Rellstab\, the only 6 Heine settings by Schubert and his very last song\, Die Taubenpost\, a fitting message of love to all of us. \nSchubert’s intentions for the publication of these songs\, including the order for their performance\, is not clear. Hence\, Songmakers conception for a cycle after Schubert’s earlier models – a journey there and back again\, traversing an emotional gamut ranging from love hopeful and/or renewed\, fearful foreboding to bitter disillusionment. \nUnique in the musical landscape of Australia\, Songmakers Australia brings together some of the country’s leading singers and instrumentalists in a diverse repertoire comprising some of the pinnacles of chamber music. \nArtists\nNicholas Dinopoulos\, bass-baritone\nAndrea Katz\, piano \nThis recital is presented as part of the Melba Hall Lunch Hour Concert Series. All concerts in this series can also be streamed live via the MCM website.
