SUMMARY:The Parlour – Women's Voices
DESCRIPTION:A uniquely moving experience in celebration of women.\nAbout the artists\nThe Parlour focuses on the sung storytelling of Art Song and ballad\, often spinning a cabaret-like narrative to bring the program together as a collection. Since their inception\, unearthing the intentions behind Art Song compositions and exposing the people and events that inspired them has been part of the journey. \nJane Magão soprano\nAlexandra Mathew mezzo soprano\nKaren Van Spall mezzo soprano\nGeorgina Lewis piano\nCoady Green piano \nProgram\nMargaret Sutherland Six Songs: Settings of Poems by Judith Wright \nLinda Kouvaras Winter Came Early \nAbout the concert\nInterested in investigating the people hidden in footnotes of music history\, The Parlour seeks to tell the stories of those who are too often ignored and forgotten. Women were both creators and enablers of art\, and their stories forge a window into the intimate machinations of creative life whether that be first-hand or through observation. \nTheir performance in Primrose Potter Salon will address the stark gender imbalance in art by celebrating the compositions of Australian women and telling many forgotten stories of women in what will be a uniquely moving experience. \n\nTuesday 12 July 2022 6pm; Primrose Potter Salon Duration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\nTICKETS Standard $37 ($30 Concession)

SUMMARY:The Parlour:The Magic Flute - Whose side are you on?
DESCRIPTION:In this cultural experiment\, The Parlour turns the spotlight on Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute. Forget everything you’ve been told and hear the story from the perspective of the Queen of the Night. Her land is being colonized\, her people enslaved\, her daughter abducted. She will fight with every weapon in her arsenal to protect her realm\, so who is the hero and who is the villain? \nThese two performances are “showings” rather than a full\, operatic production and have resulted from our extensive workshop. A cultural and musical exploration of gender\, race\, power\, conditioning\, and operatic tradition. Should we view much loved\, heritage art though a 21st century lens? Can we fix it? Does it still work? \nMagnificently sung in a new\, English translation of Emanuel Schikaneder’s original libretto with additional script to wrap some context around the themes. Are you ready?
