SUMMARY:Selby & Friends – Final Statements
DESCRIPTION:Selby & Friends’ final concert for their 2023 season brings together two brilliant guest artists of the younger generation.\nThis extraordinary final program for the 2023 Season brings together two highly accomplished guest artists of the younger generation who are making great waves now they are back in Australia – the brilliant violinist Ike See\, previously Assoc. Concertmaster of the Adelaide Symphony and now a core member of the tightly knit ACO\, and solo cellist and lecturer at the Melbourne Conservatorium\, Richard Narroway. \nThe program opens with Copland’s famous Vitebsk\, a beautiful but brief work by the great American composer. We follow with the passionate and powerful Arensky Piano Trio No. 1 after having presented Arensky’s second piano trio in 2022. \nAnd to bring the Season to a close\, Schubert’s delightful\, melody-rich piano trio was composed in the last year of his life – a testament to a beautiful and rich life extinguished too soon. \n\nThursday 2 November 2023 2pm & 7pm;  MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $77 ($59 Concession)

SUMMARY:Selby and Friends: Three stages of Man
DESCRIPTION:Selby & Friends’ welcome Susie Park and the ever-popular Timo-Veikko Valve in their fourth concert of the season.\nSelby & Friends’ fourth program of the year celebrates the three stages of man. We begin with the extraordinary Ravel Duo for Violin and Cello composed when Ravel was at the height of his powers followed by the succinct genius of a mature Brahms with luscious melody and restrained passion\, and finally an elegy to the memory of a great artist – Tchaikovsky – by the 20 year-old Rachmaninov in one of the most remarkable and encompassing piano trios in the genre. \nWith Kathy for this tour is the brilliant and irrepressible Susie Park\, visiting from the US\, and the ever-popular Timo-Veikko Valve\, Principal Cellist of the ACO. \n\nThursday 31 August 2023 2pm & 7pm    MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon    Duration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS Standard $77 ($59 Concession)

SUMMARY:Selby & Friends: Iconic ‘Fathers’
DESCRIPTION:Selby & Friends’ third concert welcomes back Natalie Chee and Julian Smiles for their 2023 season.\nAbout the concert\nSelby & Friends’ is delighted to welcome back Natalie Chee and Julian Smiles after a Covid- interrupted tour in 2022. In this special program\, Kathy and her friends present three iconic trailblazing composers whose influence exploded previous conceptions to pave an entirely new path forward. \nHaydn was a prolific piano trio composer who literally created our idea of the genre. Dvořák\, the great Czech composer and father of nationalism in music\, made it possible for composers who followed to revel in their mother tongue and express it through music. And the giant Viennese/American composer\, Schoenberg\, changed the face of music entirely with his revolutionary approach to harmony in music. A stunning concert presented by three of Australia’s finest artists. \nJoseph Haydn Piano Trio in D-Hob XV:24 \nArnold Schoenberg Verklärte Nacht for Piano Trio\, Op. 4 \nAntonin Dvořák Piano Trio No. 4 in E minor\, Op. 90 ‘Dumky’ \n\nWednesday 12 July 2023 2pm & 7pm; Primrose Potter Salon; Duration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $77 ($59 Concession)

SUMMARY:Selby & Friends Twilight Series – In the Shadow of War
DESCRIPTION:The surprising connection between these works is that of wartime conflict and how it impacted each composer.\nProgram\nMatthew Hindson – ‘1915’ (2015) \nFranz Schubert – Piano Trio in E flat\, Op.100 D.929 (1827) \nIn the case of Australian Matthew Hindson composing in 2015\, he was propelled by the mere thought of how a young person in 1915 might face the prospect of going to war. Most people don’t think of Schubert in terms of conflict\, but in fact he was surrounded by the threat of war during the Napoleonic era throughout his short life. One may never know the true impact this had on him and whether his penchant for song grew from a desire to avoid any conflict and embrace love and beauty. We are excited to welcome the wonderful Sophie Rowell with Kathy and Tipi on this journey of exploration. \n\nTuesday 23 August 2022 5pm; MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon; Duration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $57 ($55 Concession)

SUMMARY:Selby & Friends – Back from the Brink
DESCRIPTION:About the concert\nSelby & Friends return to the stage\, back from the brink\, after what seems like a long hiatus with a fascinating program celebrating composers who fought against the establishment and\, in doing so\, forged a courageous way forward for those that followed. \nFormed in large part from a missed concert in 2021\, this concert introduces the great American composer\, Amy Beach\, who wrote a strong rebuttal to comments made by Dvořák about women in music and who became a national symbol of women’s creative power. Dvořák’s first piano trio is an intimate view into the great composer’s favoured genre\, and Ravel represents one whose own path fused modern elements with the baroque\, classicism and jazz. \nThe brilliant and versatile cellist Clancy Newman is welcomed back from the US to join Australian icon Dene Olding and Artistic Director & pianist\, Kathryn Selby\, performing a Selby & Friends concert together for the first time since May last year. \nProgram \nAmy Beach\nPiano Trio Op.150 \nAntonin Dvořák\nPiano Trio no. 1 in B flat\, Op.21 \nMaurice Ravel\nPiano Trio in A minor \nArtists \nDene Olding violin\nClancy Newman cello\nKathryn Selby piano \nBooking Information\n\n\nThursday 17 March 2022 7.30pm \n\nPrimrose Potter Salon\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\nStandard $75 ($57 Concession) \nBuy Subscription Package\nStandard $309 ($235 Concession)

SUMMARY:Selby and Friends: By Arrangement
DESCRIPTION:In a time before radio\, CDs and Youtube\, the only way to enjoy an orchestral work over and over was to have access to an arrangement for a smaller chamber ensemble. Thus\, our program ‘By Arrangement’ – a truly extraordinary glance back to another era when composers and their colleagues arranged popular orchestral works for piano trio in order to allow music lovers to enjoy their favourite music in their own home! \nThis program presents three works by the masters Haydn and Beethoven and a new arrangement of one of Ravel’s small masterpieces\, all presented by three of Australia’s most outstanding artists – SSO Concertmaster Andrew Haveron\, ACO Principal Cellist Timo-Veikko Valve and pianist Kathryn Selby. Rarely performed\, this is a truly unique experience for the chamber music lover!
