SUMMARY:Rubiks Collective: The Big Idea – 10 Years of Rubiks Collective
DESCRIPTION:‘Incredibly personal\, strangely spiritual and ultimately deeply touching.’ – Limelight\nWhat if one idea changed everything? \nJourney through the sound of inspiration striking as Melbourne’s Rubiks Collective celebrates its 10th anniversary with a world premiere of The Big Idea – a genre-defying monodrama from Australian composer Matthew Shlomowitz and writer Vid Simoniti. \nAt the heart of the piece is a single character on the brink – a new idea blossoms\, a life unravels\, and we witness the tantalising chaos in between. Featuring celebrated vocalist and long-time Rubiks collaborator vocalist Lotte Betts-Dean\, The Big Idea is a story of ambition and artistic obsession that spirals from bluest desperation into delightful absurdity. \nMelbourne’s cult-favourites Rubiks Collective have established themselves as fearless innovators in Australia’s contemporary classical landscape. Hailed for creating experiences that are ‘incredibly personal\, strangely spiritual and ultimately deeply touching’ (Limelight)\, they continue to push boundaries with this production. \nCombining spoken word\, music\, and theatrical elements\, The Big Idea is an iconoclastic departure from monodramas like Schoenberg’s Expectation and Poulenc’s The Human Voice.  \nListen in as the ensemble shapeshifts from samba to Scandinavian jazz\, from late Romanticism to old-school Broadway—creating a sonic world as unpredictable as the human psyche itself. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 25 September 2025 – 6:00pm \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval). Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $37; Concession $30

SUMMARY:Rubiks Collective | A Book of Hours
DESCRIPTION:FREE PERFORMANCE \nA Book of Hours is a meditation on the mystery of time: a live multimedia performance combining stop-motion animation\, screen dance projections and a quirky live musical score from a quartet of choreographed musicians. \nWith a quartet for toothbrushes\, vegetables swirling in stop-motion and wind-up toys whirring across the stage\, this revelatory new work is a triumph of imagination from a team of award-winning Victorian artists. \nCreated by composer Kate Neal\, choreographer Gerard Van Dyck\, filmmaker Sal Cooper and performed by new music ensemble Rubiks Collective\, A Book of Hours explores how we divide our time and spend our days. \nNew arrangements of works by Baroque classical composer Couperin (1668-1733) sit alongside distinctively contemporary compositions featuring synthesisers\, reception bells\, cardboard boxes and speaking clocks. \nA sonic and visual feast for the senses\, A Book of Hours is full of moments to surprise and delight audiences of all ages. \nTime collapses\, days invert and nights implode. \nTick tock\, tick tock. Watch it all unwind… \nReviews \n“Call it dance or art music or just live performance. Whatever it is – A Book of Hours is the best kind of puzzle.” \n— ★★★★ The Age \n“…a spectacular intertwining of artforms… clever and entertaining for all.” \n— Classikon \nDetails \nThis performance is generously supported by the New Music Studio (The University of Melbourne). \nTickets are free but registration is essential.

SUMMARY:Rubiks Collective - Towards Home
DESCRIPTION:“incredibly personal\, strangely spiritual and ultimately deeply touching” – Limelight \nRubiks Collective presents two world premieres from rising art music composers Alice Chance and Maria Kaoutzani\, in this performance exploring the intricacies between love\, intergenerational relationships and complex modern-day perceptions of ‘home’. \nChance’s new work Heirloom is an electroacoustic ‘mother-daughter motet’\, featuring the voices of fifteen women from five different families. Drawing from the Blue Mountains\, the Torres Strait\, the Philippines\, France and Iran\, the women sing and share stories of the treasured keepsakes\, traditions and memories handed down from grandmother to mother to daughter: a jewellery box\, a collection of songs\, a prayer. \nDrawing musical inspiration from Monteverdi’s Vespers and Gavin Bryars’ Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet\, the voices slowly phase in and out of synchronisation with each other\, reflecting the complex and constantly evolving ties between mothers and daughters throughout their lifetimes. \nHeirloom is paired with Five Love Songs by Maria Kaoutzani (Greece/USA)\, one of the founding members of the all-female New York composer collective Kinds of Kings. While its title suggests simplicity of format and concept\, this new work interrogates Kaoutzani’s personal experiences of love and belonging regarding intimate relationships and nationalistic identity. \nDate 25 August 2023\nTime 7.00pm\nDuration 60 minutes\nAddress Melbourne Recital Centre\, 31 Sturt Street Southbank 3006\nTickets $30 – $37\nBookings melbournerecital.com.au or (03) 9699 3333

SUMMARY:Waves + Lines
DESCRIPTION:Contemporary art music ensemble Rubiks presents the Australian premiere of Waves + Lines – a multimedia song cycle for soprano\, electronics and chamber ensemble by Princeton-based composer Gemma Peacocke (NZ/USA)\, adapted from Eliza Griswold’s book\, ‘I Am the Beggar of the World: Landays from Contemporary Afghanistan‘. \nThe ultraconservative regime of the Taliban has meant that the lives of Afghan women have been largely invisible to the outside world. Landays\, poems comprised of a single rhyming couplet on subjects like love\, grief\, home and war\, offer a surprising and vivid glimpse into this secret world. This evocative work explores the passion\, desperation and humour of these women who are trapped in a seemingly veiled existence. \nRubiks are delighted to announce that Gemma Peacocke will be joining the ensemble in Melbourne for the Australian premiere of Waves + Lines. This performance will also feature projections by New York-based multidisciplinary artist Anchuli Felicia King (AU/USA). \nThis event is generously supported by the Melbourne Recital Centre\, the Metropolis Festival and assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council\, its arts funding and advisory body. \nProgram: \nGemma Peacocke – Waves + Lines (2017) *\n*Australian Premiere \nRubiks Collective \nKeyboards – Jacob Abela\nPercussion – Kaylie Melville\nGuest Vocals – Georgie Darvidis\nGuest Double Bass – Hamish Gullick

SUMMARY:The cold earth slept below
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Kew Court House’s Future Classic series\, Rubiks presents The cold earth slept below; \na program of breathtaking beauty inspired by the Winter Solstice\, exploring the intertwined themes of death and renewal in human lives and the natural world. \nThis performance will feature Donatoni’s sparkling Ave for glockenspiel\, piccolo and celeste\, and the Australian premieres of major works by two Pulitzer Prize winning composers: Julia Wolfe’s fiercely virtuosicSinging in the dead of night\, and David Lang’s haunting song cycle\, death speaks. Evoking the stillness of cold winter nights and the hopeful promise of spring\, The cold earth slept below is a celebration of the fragility and resilience of life. \n\n\n\nBringing together some of Australia’s most exciting and versatile young performers\, Rubiks is dedicated to the proliferation and celebration of contemporary music in Australia in all of its contexts. Formed at the Australian National Academy of Music\, these dynamic musicians have quickly established a reputation for excellence and delighting audiences with their unique programming.
