SUMMARY:Royal Melbourne Philharmonic - Quasimodo: The Musical in concert
DESCRIPTION:Broadwest Productions\, in association with the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic proudly present the world premiere of a new musical in concert:\n\n‘Quasimodo -The Musical’ – The untold story of the Hunchback of Notre Dame is an exciting new Australian musical written by Samuel Kristy.  Featuring lush orchestrations by Hamish Ander and under the Musical Direction of Andrew Wailes\, this show features memorable characters\, and a series powerful musical numbers dealing with the universal human issues of Love\, Romance\, Lust\, Betrayal\, and Murder. . . a stellar cast of some of Australia’s leading musical theatre soloists has been assembled to bring this wonderful new score to life. They will be joined by the acclaimed Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra.\n\n\n\nThis will be the World Premiere of this powerful and captivating concert version of the (largely untold) story of Victor Hugo’s classic romantic thriller – an uplifting story of love\, hope and resilience.\n\n\n\nSet in Paris 1482 in the Gothic marvel of Notre Dame Cathedral\, “Quasimodo -The Musical” catapults us into a thrilling tale of unrequited love and a tangled web of mystery\, adventure\, and intrigue which envelopes the characters – the hunchbacked bell ringer Quasimodo\, the Gypsy girl Esmeralda\, Captain Phoebus\, and the Evil Archdeacon Frollo. Destiny throws them together into a seething cauldron of conflicting desires.\n\n\n\nThe audience is taken on an exciting emotional roller coaster ride – from tragedy to farce and comedy. The ‘Brethren of Beggars\, Thieves and Gypsies’ bring a sparkling ray of light – with their boisterous\, rollicking songs and music which will get toes tapping.\n\n\n\nThe performance is crafted to be both magical and transformative. Using the unique setting of Melbourne historic Capitol Theatre\, with its breathtaking\, multi-colored ceiling\, this sumptuous concert version will feature costumed soloists\, lighting effects\, screen projections\, as well as the power of a live orchestra and large chorus performing a musical feast which blends the best elements of sumptuous symphonic writing with classic Broadway music (think Les Misérables\, Jekyll & Hyde\, or The Phantom of the Opera)\, and elements of rock\, pop\, swing\, and jazz.\n\n\n\n\n\nDon’t miss out on this spectacular musical – be mesmerized by the sheer joy and power of this production.\n\n\n\nThe historic art deco Capitol Theatre on Swanston Street in the central business district of Melbourne\, opened in 1924 and was designed by American husband and wife architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin. It is the oldest of Melbourne’s surviving large picture palaces\, and is known for its extravagant décor and abstract motifs\, including an intricate geometric ceiling containing thousands of coloured lights\, designed to evoke the walls of a crystalline cave. Proposals in the early 1960s to demolish the theatre sparked one of Australia’s first major heritage conservation campaigns.  RMIT University purchased The Capitol in 1999 for use as a lecture theatre\, and in 2014 it was closed to undergo an extensive five-year restoration and upgrade. The Capitol Theatre has since re-opened\, and is once again a spectacular venue for festival screenings\, theatrical performances\, and other events.\n\nIn 2024 the Capitol celebrates its 100th anniversary\, and the RMP is thrilled to be performing the largest production yet to be staged in the newly restored venue. \nOriginal Music\, Lyrics and Script by Samuel Kristy \nOriginal Orchestrations by Hamish Ander \nConductor and Musical Director Andrew Wailes \nJoshua Robson – as Quasimodo\nDes Flanagan – as Archdeacon Frollo\nEnya Angel – as Esmeralda\nMichael Lampard – as Clopin\nBen Clark –  as Captain Phoebus\nFem Belling – as Sister Gadule\nPaul Hogan – as The Lady of the House\nSean Hutton – as Jehan\nJulee Johnson – as Fleur De Lis \nRoyal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir  \nRoyal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra\n \n\nFri 20 Sep 08:00 PM\nSat 21 Sep 03:00 PM\nSat 21 Sep 08:00 PM\nSun 22 Sep 03:00 PM\nSun 22 Sep 08:00 PM\n\nThe Capitol Theatre Melbourne\n113 Swanston Street \, Enter via Capitol Arcade\, opp. Town Hall\, Melbourne Victoria 300 \nTICKETS: $35.00 – $95.00

SUMMARY:Royal Melbourne Philharmonic: Mozart’s Coronation Mass and the RMP Aria Final
DESCRIPTION:Hear some of the nation’s finest young singers battle it out in the final of Australia’s most prestigious oratorio soloists award\, accompanied by the brilliant pianist RMP Principal Accompanist Stefan Cassomenos. \n2024 RMP Aria Finalists: \nAmanda Hargreaves\, soprano 25\, (b. Geelong\, VIC)\n Saskia Mascitti\,mezzo soprano\, 23\, (b. Sydney\, NSW) \nThis evening will also feature a performance of one of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s most beloved sacred works – the majestic \nKrönungsmesse (Coronation Mass) in C Major\, KV. 317 and the \nChurch Sonata No. 16 in C major KV 329 (317a) \nMozart wrote his Mass in C\, K. 317\, popularly known as the Coronation Mass\, in 1779\, during the time that he was court organist and composer to the Archbishop of Salzburg. It is no doubt the best known and\, for many\, the finest of the masses that he wrote for Salzburg. Although there is no definite record of a performance\, its bright tone suggest that it was probably performed in the Salzburg cathedral at Easter of 1779. It is thought also to have been performed years later during celebrations for the coronation of the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold II and perhaps also for that of his successor\, Francis II which is probably when it probably receieved its nickmname as the “Coronation” Mass. \nDespite the archbishop’s time limitations\, it appears that Mozart may well have inserted a brief church sonata between movements. One of his seventeen single-movement church sonatas has been associated with his Coronation Mass\, since it was written about the same time\, is in the same key\, and has the same orchestration\, although the organ is obbligato. When Alfred Einstein revised Koechel’s numbering of Mozart’s works\, he altered the number of this sonata from K. 329 to K. 317a to reflect its connection with this mass\, which is K. 317. The normal place in the church service for such a sonata would have been between the Gloria and the Credo\, as the celebrant moves from one side of the choir\, where he has read the epistle\, to the other side\, where he reads the gospel. It seems appropriate\, therefore\, to insert this sonata between the Gloria and Credo in these performances of Mozart’s Coronation Mass. \nFeaturing : \nJesse Linke soprano; Sally-Anne Russell mezzo soprano; Other soloists to be announced \nRoyal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir; Melbourne University Choral Society\, Box Hill Chorale \nRoyal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra \nAndrew Wailes conductor \n Sun 18 Aug 03:00 PM | 3pm\, Matinee performance (concert only One hour\, TICKETS: $29 – $49\n Sun 18 Aug 07:00 PM | 7pm\, Evening Gala (includes concert at the Final of the 2024 RMP Aria) 7.00pm Session Ends: 10.00pm TICKETS: $39 – $59 \nThe Edge\, Federation Square\, Cnr Swanston Street and Flinders Street

SUMMARY:Royal Melbourne Philharmonic: Handel’s Messiah 2023
DESCRIPTION:World record performance in Melbourne Town Hall\n\nThe 40th Sir Bernard Heinze Memorial Concert \n“The Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra delivered another vibrant and polished reading.Music director Andrew Wailes conducted with precision and infectious energy urging the chamber-sized orchestra and 100-strong choir to some stirring renditions of the big choir pieces including the famous Hallelujah\, Glory to God and For unto us a Child is born. Wailes\, favouring brisk tempos\, made for exciting listening…” – The Age\n“Animation and attention to detail were distinctive features of this performance. The forward momentum established in the opening Sinfony never flagged. The RMP Choir sang with scores neatly closed by their sides for several key choruses\, alert to the subtleties of dynamics and tempo in Wailes’ direction. And there were plenty of those to keep the audience absorbed as the work assumed an unexpected freshness…  This was an experienced choir\, trained with painstaking care to form a disciplined ensemble… the final “Amen” chorus was greeted by such a prolonged standing ovation\, with cheers and whistles usually heard at sporting events” – Classic Melbourne\nRoyal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir & Orchestra presents Handel’s iconic Messiah for the world record 244th time since 1853. The world’s most-loved oratorio\, Messiah is famous for its sparkling arias\, powerful choruses\, and surging climaxes (including the magnificent Hallelujah! Chorus and the equally thrilling Amen! SUMMARY:Mozart Requiem by Candlelight
DESCRIPTION:Hear three of the great Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s most iconic works performed by candlelight in the spectacular setting of St Paul’s Cathedral. The acclaimed Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra present Mozart’s dramatic and enigmatic Requiem in D minor. Unfinished at the time of the composer’s death\, and shrouded in mystery since it was first commissioned by an anonymous messenger dressed in grey\, the Requiem is one of the world’s most famous compositions. From the Requiem’s dark and ponderous opening bars\, to the scintillating Dies Irae\, the dramatic choral fugues\, the famous Tuba Mirum and the emotionally gripping Confutatis and Lacrymosa movements\, the work takes the listener on an emotional journey like few others in Western music. Also being performed is the famous Symphony No. 25 in G minor\, its  first movement made famous  since being used as the opening music in Miloš Forman’s  award-winning biographical film Amadeus. Composed when Mozart was just 17 years old\, it is regarded by many as one of his finest early works. The symphony is written in a “Sturm und Drang” style (German for “Storm and Stress”) – a style characterized by emotional extremes and sudden changes in tempo and dynamics. The opening movement begins with a particularly dramatic repeated syncopated pattern in the violins and violas. This rhythm returns again in the final movement. Ludwig van Beethoven knew the symphony well\, copying 29 bars from the score in one of his sketchbooks. It is thought that the opening theme of the Symphony No. 25’s final movement may have inspired the third movement of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony.Finally\, hear the poignant motet Ave Verum Corpus\, a miniature masterpiece and the final choral composition ever completed by the great composer.RMP Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Andrew Wailes leads the RMP Choir and Orchestra\, joined by four outstanding soloists in two spectacular performances in the stunning setting of St Paul’s Cathedral. \nFor these concerts\, much-loved Australian soprano Jacqueline Porter\, well known to RMP audiences and a regular performer with all the major Australian orchestras\, headlines the quartet. She will be joined by the young Japanese-Australian mezzo-soprano Syrah Torii (recipient of the 2023 Victorian Opera Emerging Artist Prize\, and a Developing Artist in Melbourne Opera’s Richard Divall Emerging Artists Programme) and the quickly-emerging young tenor Benjamin Glover (winner of the Conductor’s Encouragement Award at the 2022 RMP Aria Competition). They will be joined by the much-respected Sydney-based bass baritone Christopher Richardson (a former winner of both the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Aria Award\, and ‘The Frances MacEachron Award for Outstanding Vocal Achievement’ at The Oratorio Society of New York’s Solo Competition at Carnegie Hall). \nPROGRAM: \nMOZART: Symphony No. 25 in G minor\, KV. 183/173dB \nMOZART: Requiem in D minor\, KV. 626 and Ave Verum Corpus KV.618 \nCAST: \nAndrew Wailes\, conductor \nJacqueline Porter\, soprano\nSyrah Torii*\, mezzo soprano\nBenjamin Glover\, tenor\nChristopher Richardson\, bass baritone\nRoyal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir\nRoyal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra \nApproximate duration of concert: 90 minutes with no interval

SUMMARY:RMP presents Tchaikovsky\, Angel of Music
DESCRIPTION:Act III of the new opera “Tchaikovsky \, Angel of Music” (Premiere)\n‘Moscow’ Coronation Cantata (Australian premiere)\nFestival Coronation March for Tsar Alexander III\, as well as a special musical tribute to Ukraine.\n  \nPyotr Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) wrote the great ‘Moscow’ Cantata in 1883 to mark the Coronation of Emperor Alexander III. Set to an epic poem by Apollon Maikov (1821-1897)\, the lavishly scored music is regarded as some of the most grandiose music that Tchaikovsky ever wrote. RMP Chief Conductor Andrew Wailes will conduct the RMP Choir and Orchestra\, and outstanding soloists Sally-Anne Russell\,  and Christopher Hillier in a rare performance of this dramatic musical panorama of Russian history\, from the foundation of Moscow to the enthronement of the first Tsar. It is believed that this will be the first full-scale performance of the work in Australia.  Tchaikovsky’s Festival Coronation March is a lavish and majestic orchestral work commissioned by the city of Moscow for the same coronation in 1883. \nTchaikovsky\, Angel of Music is a large\, romantic opera in three acts by Australian composer Sean Peter Ross\, which shines a light on the life of the great Russian composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky through Tchaikovsky’s own words. It was the winner of the Director’s Choice Award for Opera\, in the Boston International Contempo Festival composition competition in 2014. The work also features a cameo performance of Tchaikovsky’s famous Cherubic Hymn No. 3 from the Liturgy of St John Chrysostom.  Hear the concert-length Act III of this powerful and uplifting opera performed under the direction of the composer\, and featuring an outstanding cast of Australian opera stars including bass-baritone Christopher Hillier as Pyotr Tchaikovsky\, mezzo-soprano Sally-Anne Russell as Nadezhda von Meck\, tenor Michael Petruccelli as Nikolay von Meck\,  baritone Andrew Jones as Modeste Tchaikovsky\, soprano Lee Abrahmsen Yuliya Von Meck\, and narrator Adrian Tamburini as the older Tchaikovsky. \nIn light of the terrible events unfolding in Europe\, this special concert will also feature a moving musical tribute to Ukraine and its people\, including performances of the powerful a capella A Prayer for Ukraine (sung in Ukrainian)\, and a grand symphonic performance of  “Shche ne vmerla Ukrayina“ (the State Anthem of Ukraine) for large symphony orchestra and chorus\, conducted by Andrew Wailes.

SUMMARY:Royal Melbourne Philharmonic: Across the Vast\, Eternal Sky – The music of Ola Gjeilo
DESCRIPTION:Ola Gjeilo is one of the most frequently performed composers in the choral world. An accomplished pianist\, improvisations over his own published choral pieces have become a trademark of his collaborations. Although Norwegian by birth\, it is perhaps Ola’s adopted country of America that has influenced the composer’s distinctive soundworld the most\, evolving a style that is often described as cinematic and evocative\, with a lush\, harmonious sound.\n\nAcross the Vast\, Eternal Sky celebrates the music of Ola Gjeilo. A combination of his best-loved choral\, chamber\, and solo piano works\, this concert will take the listener on a meditative and uplifting journey throughout Gjeilo’s most celebrated compositions\, which examine themes inspired by the emotional\, spiritual and natural world. From the famed Northern Lights of the Arctic\, to the sweeping Norwegian Tundra (for women’s voices)\, to the achingly beautiful The Ground (taken from the Sunrise Mass)\, and works such as Evening Prayer (with improvised soprano saxophone and piano)\, Ubi Caritas (with piano improvisation) and Ecce Novum Gjeilo’s music combines beautiful harmonies with a sense of space and movement of time with subtle cinematic and jazz influences.\nDark and Luminous Night (both for 8-part choir\, string quartet and piano) provide two outstanding examples of Gjeilo’s ability to communicate directly with the listener’s emotions. Complementing his choral works will be several of his chamber instrumental works\, including The Crossing\, Reflections\, and Home (for Piano and String Quartet).\n\nAndrew Wailes\,conductor\nPeter de Jager\, piano\nLuke Carbon\, saxophone\nGjeilo String Quartet\nRoyal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir\n\n\n\nCost\n$55\n\n$25 Child (under 16)\n$48 Concession\n$35 Student

SUMMARY:“Sunrise and Sunset” RMP presents Ola Gjeilo’s Sunrise Mass & Fauré’s Requiem
DESCRIPTION:SUNRISE AND SUNSET\nOla Gjelo Sunrise Mass\nKristian Hernes Canticle of the sun\nGabriel Fauré Requiem in D minor\, Op. 48 \nSaturday 25 May\, 2019 at 8pm\nSt Paul’s Cathedral \nAndrew Wailes\, conductor\nPhoebe Paine\, soprano\nNicholas Jones\, tenor\nJeremy Kleeman\, baritone\nKristian Winther\, violin\nDean Sky-Lucas\, piano\nCalvin Bowman\, organ \nRoyal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir\nMelbourne University Choral Society\nRoyal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra \nThe Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo was born in Oslo\, Norway\, in 1978. Following studies at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo\, the Royal College of Music in London\, and the Juilliard School of Music in New York\, (where he won the 2005 Juilliard Composers’ Orchestral Work Competition)\, he relocated to the USA to study film composition in Los Angeles. As a composer he exploded on the choral scene in 2007. His recent and rapid meteoric rise as a composer corresponded with the creation of his masterwork for double SATB chorus and large string orchestra\, the Sunrise Mass. The Mass was commissioned in 2007 by Tore Erik Mohn for performance by two combined choruses\, Majorstua Kammerkor and Kammerkoret Nova\, and was premiered on November 2\, 2008. Since then\, the Sunrise Mass has been presented in concerts across the world to great acclaim. \nThis spiritually-uplifting extended work\, neither expressly sacred nor secular\, uses ancient texts even though the titles of the movements are in English: I. The Spheres (Kyrie); II. Sunrise (Gloria); III. The City (Credo); IV. Identity & The Ground (Sanctus). The four movements develop from a sense of the cosmos to an affirmation of the earth\, from the echo of The Spheres in the first movement to the final reassuring themes of Identity & The Ground. \nGjeilo’s compositional style and fingerprint is distinct and is the result of an amalgamation of cinematic and classical influences with sacred and secular elements. His Sunrise Mass was clearly composed with one eye on the big screen\, influences by today’s hottest motion picture composers\, and one eye towards the past in the direction of Brahms\, Britten\, Duruflé\, and Bach. In Gjeilo’s Sunrise Mass the listener experiences the full metaphorical journey from the starry Heaven to Earth\, from undifferentiated darkness to solid\, warm life\, evolving spiritually as a human. \nCommissioned by KORiOSLO (Conductor: Tom Wiklund)\, and financed by the Norwegian Composers Fund in 2017\, “Canticle of the Sun” was composed by Kristian Hernes in 2017. Kristian Hernes has a Masters degree (classical piano) from the Norwegian Academy of Music. He has a broad area of activity as a performer; as solo pianist\, accompanist for many of the nation’s leading artists\, studio musician for CD recordings / television / motion pictures and as the organist in Torshov / Lilleborg church\, Oslo. He has won a number of prizes for his compositions from the Norwegian Choir Association and the Norwegian Association for Sacred Music. His works\, especially his compositions for choir\, have been performed in a number of countries in throughout Europe and North America\, in Australia and South Africa. \nIn his famous seven-section Requiem\, the French composer Gabriel Fauré distilled some of the most beautiful melodies ever composed. The creation was almost certainly a musical tribute to his father\, who died in 1885\, three years before work on the Requiem began. \nAs with much of Western classical music\, the Requiem owes its roots to Christian faith. Traditionally\, at its heart\, it is a prayerful lament for the dead. Fauré’s own setting of the Requiem was altogether different\, though\, because here was a composer who\, unlike many of his contemporaries\, had no clear religious beliefs. By contrast\, he was very much a doubter\, described by his own son as ‘a sceptic’. In place of the sombre nature of many requiems that had gone before\, Fauré’s is noted for its calm\, serene and peaceful outlook. Faure’s Requiem provides musical solace to the listener in a work that focuses not on the guilt of sin or fear of damnation\, but on the supposedly restful and fear-free nature of death. \nOf all seven sections\, the Pie Jesu\, Agnus Dei and In Paradisum emerge as the most glorious\, filled with rich\, soulful melodies. The work garnered the praise of many other composers – not least Camille Saint-Saëns\, who thought it “divine”. It was performed at Fauré’s own funeral in 1924\, and has since become one of the world’s most enduring choral works across the globe.
