SUMMARY:Royal Melbourne Philharmonic: Handel’s “Acis & Galatea”
DESCRIPTION:Featuring an English text by John Gay\, George Frideric Handel’s “Acis & Galatea” has been variously described as a serenata\, a masque\, a pastoral\, pastoral opera or even an oratorio. It was by far Handel’s most popular dramatic work during his lifetime\, and is his only stage work never to have left the opera repertory\, enjoying frequent performances throughout the 18th\, 19th\, 20th\, and 21st centuries. The opera is based on the characters Acis and Galatea from Greek mythology\, later associated together in Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The story tells of the love between the mortal Acis and the sea-nymph Galatea; when the jealous cyclops Polyphemus kills Acis\, the sea-nymph Galatea transforms her lover into an immortal river spirit. \nHandel’s “Acis & Galatea” was the pinnacle of pastoral opera in England. Indeed\, several writers\, such as musicologist Stanley Sadie\, consider it the greatest pastoral opera ever composed. Originally written as a courtly entertainment about the simplicity of rural life\, the music contains significant quantities of wit and self-parody. The secondary characters\, Polyphemus and Damon\, provide humour without diminishing the pathos of the tragedy of the primary characters\, Acis and Galatea. The music of the first act is both elegant and sensual\, while the final act takes on a more melancholy and plaintive tone\, and provides the listener with some of Handel’s most beautiful music. \nConductor Andrew Wailes directs an exciting cast of outstanding soloists in these three performances\, with the RMP Choir and Orchestra in the intimate venues of the Assembly Hall in Melbourne and the  Ballarat Central Uniting Church. \nAndrew Wailes (Conductor) \nLily Flynn (Galatea) soprano\nTimothy Reynolds (Acis) tenor\nAlastair Cooper-Golec (Damon) tenor\nNicholas Dinopoulos (Polyphemus) bass-baritone \nRoyal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir\nRoyal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra\nStefan Cassomenos (Harpsichord) \n\nSat 02 May 03:00 PM | Assembly Hall\, Melbourne\nSun 03 May 03:00 PM | Ballarat Central Uniting Church\nTue 05 May 08:00 PM | Assembly Hall\, Melbourne

SUMMARY:Royal Melbourne Philharmonic: HAYDN’S The Creation
DESCRIPTION:Joseph Haydn: The Creation\nPLEASE NOTE VENUE AND DATE CHANGE \nTWO SPECTACULAR PERFORMANCES: SATURDAY 14 JUNE\, at 2pm and 7pm  \nNOW ON SALE! BOOK HERE \nHaydn’s glorious late oratorio The Creation is considered by many to be his greatest masterpiece\, and one of the finest examples of a classical oratorio ever composed. \nHaydn was inspired to create The Creation following his travels to England\, where he heard the great oratorios of Handel still being performed\, but with massive forces. Haydn is quoted as saying that\, once in the flow\, he begged God to let him be able to finish the work – clearly knowing he was onto something special. The Creation would go on to become one of the most successful choral works in Western musical history. \nAt one particular performance\, just a year before he died\, Haydn had to be carried into the hall on a chair to hear his music. As the audience reacted and cooed at various sublime sections of his oratorio\, Haydn was forced to take the spontaneous applause. He is said to have pointed to the sky\, smiled and said\, ‘It’s not from me: everything comes from up there!’ \nRMP Chief Conductor Andrew Wailes will lead an all-star cast of outstanding soloists – Australian/American soprano Rachelle Durkin (Metropolitan Opera/ Opera Australia / Pinchgut Opera)\, Japanese/ Australian mezzo-soprano Syrah Torii (Victorian Opera)\, tenor Michael Petruccelli (Oper Frankfurt / Opera Australia/ Pinchgut Opera)\, and bass-baritone Christopher Richardson  (Opera Australia / ACO/ Pinchgut Opera)\, along with the large choral and orchestral forces that Haydn envisaged for this great work. A spectacular choir comprising both the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and Melbourne University Choral Society will be joined by over 50 players from the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra in the magnificent setting of St Paul’s Cathedral in the heart of the city. \nA concert not to be missed by all lovers of this great work. \nAndrew Wailes conductor\nRachelle Durkin soprano\nSyrah Torii mezzo-soprano\nMichael Petruccelli tenor\nChristopher Richardson bass-baritone \nRoyal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir\nMelbourne University Choral Society\nRoyal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra \nTWO SPECTACULAR PERFORMANCES: \n\nSat 14 Jun 02:00 PM | St Paul’s Cathedral\nSat 14 Jun 07:00 PM | St Paul’s Cathedral\n\nNOW ON SALE!
They will be joined by the acclaimed Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra.\n\n\n\nThis will be the World Premiere of this powerful and captivating concert version of the (largely untold) story of Victor Hugo’s classic romantic thriller – an uplifting story of love\, hope and resilience.\n\n\n\nSet in Paris 1482 in the Gothic marvel of Notre Dame Cathedral\, “Quasimodo -The Musical” catapults us into a thrilling tale of unrequited love and a tangled web of mystery\, adventure\, and intrigue which envelopes the characters – the hunchbacked bell ringer Quasimodo\, the Gypsy girl Esmeralda\, Captain Phoebus\, and the Evil Archdeacon Frollo. It is the oldest of Melbourne’s surviving large picture palaces\, and is known for its extravagant décor and abstract motifs\, including an intricate geometric ceiling containing thousands of coloured lights\, designed to evoke the walls of a crystalline cave. Proposals in the early 1960s to demolish the theatre sparked one of Australia’s first major heritage conservation campaigns.  RMIT University purchased The Capitol in 1999 for use as a lecture theatre\, and in 2014 it was closed to undergo an extensive five-year restoration and upgrade. The Capitol Theatre has since re-opened\, and is once again a spectacular venue for festival screenings\, theatrical performances\, and other events.\n\nIn 2024 the Capitol celebrates its 100th anniversary\, and the RMP is thrilled to be performing the largest production yet to be staged in the newly restored venue. \nOriginal Music\, Lyrics and Script by Samuel Kristy \nOriginal Orchestrations by Hamish Ander \nConductor and Musical Director Andrew Wailes \nJoshua Robson – as Quasimodo\nDes Flanagan – as Archdeacon Frollo\nEnya Angel – as Esmeralda\nMichael Lampard – as Clopin\nBen Clark –  as Captain Phoebus\nFem Belling – as Sister Gadule\nPaul Hogan – as The Lady of the House\nSean Hutton – as Jehan\nJulee Johnson – as Fleur De Lis \nRoyal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir  \nRoyal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra\n \n\nFri 20 Sep 08:00 PM\nSat 21 Sep 03:00 PM\nSat 21 Sep 08:00 PM\nSun 22 Sep 03:00 PM\nSun 22 Sep 08:00 PM\n\nThe Capitol Theatre Melbourne\n113 Swanston Street \, Enter via Capitol Arcade\, opp. Town Hall\, Melbourne Victoria 300 \nTICKETS: $35.00 – $95.00

SUMMARY:Royal Melbourne Philharmonic: Mozart’s Coronation Mass and the RMP Aria Final
DESCRIPTION:Hear some of the nation’s finest young singers battle it out in the final of Australia’s most prestigious oratorio soloists award\, accompanied by the brilliant pianist RMP Principal Accompanist Stefan Cassomenos. \n2024 RMP Aria Finalists: \nAmanda Hargreaves\, soprano 25\, (b. Melbourne \, VIC) \nTimothy Nunn\, baritone\, 29\, (b. Sydney\, NSW) \nLana Kains\, soprano\, 26\, (b. Darwin\, NT) \nJack Jordan\,tenor\, 25\, (b. Melbourne\, VIC) \nLucy Schneider\, soprano\, 29\, (b. East Freemantle WA) \nEliza Bennetts O’Connor\, soprano\, 24\, (b. Melbourne\, VIC) \nReserve Finalists: \n Steve Coutts\,tenor\, 32\, (b. Geelong\, VIC)\n Saskia Mascitti\,mezzo soprano\, 23\, (b. Sydney\, NSW) \nThis evening will also feature a performance of one of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s most beloved sacred works – the majestic \nKrönungsmesse (Coronation Mass) in C Major\, KV. 317 and the \nChurch Sonata No. 16 in C major KV 329 (317a) \nMozart wrote his Mass in C\, K. 317\, popularly known as the Coronation Mass\, in 1779\, during the time that he was court organist and composer to the Archbishop of Salzburg. It is no doubt the best known and\, for many\, the finest of the masses that he wrote for Salzburg. Although there is no definite record of a performance\, its bright tone suggest that it was probably performed in the Salzburg cathedral at Easter of 1779. It is thought also to have been performed years later during celebrations for the coronation of the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold II and perhaps also for that of his successor\, Francis II which is probably when it probably receieved its nickmname as the “Coronation” Mass. \nDespite the archbishop’s time limitations\, it appears that Mozart may well have inserted a brief church sonata between movements. One of his seventeen single-movement church sonatas has been associated with his Coronation Mass\, since it was written about the same time\, is in the same key\, and has the same orchestration\, although the organ is obbligato. When Alfred Einstein revised Koechel’s numbering of Mozart’s works\, he altered the number of this sonata from K. 329 to K. 317a to reflect its connection with this mass\, which is K. 317. The normal place in the church service for such a sonata would have been between the Gloria and the Credo\, as the celebrant moves from one side of the choir\, where he has read the epistle\, to the other side\, where he reads the gospel. It seems appropriate\, therefore\, to insert this sonata between the Gloria and Credo in these performances of Mozart’s Coronation Mass. \nFeaturing : \nJesse Linke soprano; Sally-Anne Russell mezzo soprano; Other soloists to be announced \nRoyal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir; Melbourne University Choral Society\, Box Hill Chorale \nRoyal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra \nAndrew Wailes conductor \n Sun 18 Aug 03:00 PM | 3pm\, Matinee performance (concert only One hour\, TICKETS: $29 – $49\n Sun 18 Aug 07:00 PM | 7pm\, Evening Gala (includes concert at the Final of the 2024 RMP Aria) 7.00pm Session Ends: 10.00pm TICKETS: $39 – $59 \nThe Edge\, Federation Square\, Cnr Swanston Street and Flinders Street

DESCRIPTION:World record performance in Melbourne Town Hall\n\nThe 40th Sir Bernard Heinze Memorial Concert \n“The Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra delivered another vibrant and polished reading.Music director Andrew Wailes conducted with precision and infectious energy urging the chamber-sized orchestra and 100-strong choir to some stirring renditions of the big choir pieces including the famous Hallelujah\, Glory to God and For unto us a Child is born. Wailes\, favouring brisk tempos\, made for exciting listening…” – The Age\n“Animation and attention to detail were distinctive features of this performance. The forward momentum established in the opening Sinfony never flagged. The RMP Choir sang with scores neatly closed by their sides for several key choruses\, alert to the subtleties of dynamics and tempo in Wailes’ direction. And there were plenty of those to keep the audience absorbed as the work assumed an unexpected freshness…  This was an experienced choir\, trained with painstaking care to form a disciplined ensemble… the final “Amen” chorus was greeted by such a prolonged standing ovation\, with cheers and whistles usually heard at sporting events” – Classic Melbourne\nRoyal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir & Orchestra presents Handel’s iconic Messiah for the world record 244th time since 1853. The world’s most-loved oratorio\, Messiah is famous for its sparkling arias\, powerful choruses\, and surging climaxes (including the magnificent Hallelujah! Chorus and the equally thrilling Amen! Choruswhich concludes the work). \nFeaturing over 120 talented musicians from the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra\, the grand Town Hall organ\, and a magnificent cast of outstanding Australian and international soloists\, this concert promises to thrill as ever under the direction of Andrew Wailes – widely regarded as one of Australia’s foremost exponents of this great work. It is hard to recall when this oratorio has been treated with such attention given to its dramatic potential; no singer – soloist or chorister – was given latitude to generate that fruity and orotund timbre familiar from performances of 20 years ago.” – Clive O’Connell (The Age)\nAndrew Wailes\, conductor\nSara Macliver\, soprano\nSally-Anne Russell\,mezzo soprano\nKyle Stegall\, tenor\nJeremy Kleeman\, baritone\nStefan Cassomenos\, harpsichord\nAndrew Bainbridge\,chamber and grand organ \nRoyal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir\nRoyal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra\n\nTICKETS NOW ON SALE!\n\n\nONLINE BOOKINGS: www.rmp.org.au\n\nNote: ALL A and B Reserve and Balcony seats can be chosen and reserved online via the RMP website and Trybooking.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProudly sponsored by the City of Melbourne

SUMMARY:Mozart Requiem by Candlelight
DESCRIPTION:Hear three of the great Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s most iconic works performed by candlelight in the spectacular setting of St Paul’s Cathedral. The acclaimed Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra present Mozart’s dramatic and enigmatic Requiem in D minor. Unfinished at the time of the composer’s death\, and shrouded in mystery since it was first commissioned by an anonymous messenger dressed in grey\, the Requiem is one of the world’s most famous compositions. From the Requiem’s dark and ponderous opening bars\, to the scintillating Dies Irae\, the dramatic choral fugues\, the famous Tuba Mirum and the emotionally gripping Confutatis and Lacrymosa movements\, the work takes the listener on an emotional journey like few others in Western music. Also being performed is the famous Symphony No. 25 in G minor\, its  first movement made famous  since being used as the opening music in Miloš Forman’s  award-winning biographical film Amadeus. Composed when Mozart was just 17 years old\, it is regarded by many as one of his finest early works. The symphony is written in a “Sturm und Drang” style (German for “Storm and Stress”) – a style characterized by emotional extremes and sudden changes in tempo and dynamics. The opening movement begins with a particularly dramatic repeated syncopated pattern in the violins and violas. This rhythm returns again in the final movement. Ludwig van Beethoven knew the symphony well\, copying 29 bars from the score in one of his sketchbooks. It is thought that the opening theme of the Symphony No. 25’s final movement may have inspired the third movement of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony.Finally\, hear the poignant motet Ave Verum Corpus\, a miniature masterpiece and the final choral composition ever completed by the great composer.RMP Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Andrew Wailes leads the RMP Choir and Orchestra\, joined by four outstanding soloists in two spectacular performances in the stunning setting of St Paul’s Cathedral. \nFor these concerts\, much-loved Australian soprano Jacqueline Porter\, well known to RMP audiences and a regular performer with all the major Australian orchestras\, headlines the quartet. She will be joined by the young Japanese-Australian mezzo-soprano Syrah Torii (recipient of the 2023 Victorian Opera Emerging Artist Prize\, and a Developing Artist in Melbourne Opera’s Richard Divall Emerging Artists Programme) and the quickly-emerging young tenor Benjamin Glover (winner of the Conductor’s Encouragement Award at the 2022 RMP Aria Competition). They will be joined by the much-respected Sydney-based bass baritone Christopher Richardson (a former winner of both the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Aria Award\, and ‘The Frances MacEachron Award for Outstanding Vocal Achievement’ at The Oratorio Society of New York’s Solo Competition at Carnegie Hall). \nPROGRAM: \nMOZART: Symphony No. 25 in G minor\, KV. 183/173dB \nMOZART: Requiem in D minor\, KV. 626 and Ave Verum Corpus KV.618 \nCAST: \nAndrew Wailes\, conductor \nJacqueline Porter\, soprano\nSyrah Torii*\, mezzo soprano\nBenjamin Glover\, tenor\nChristopher Richardson\, bass baritone\nRoyal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir\nRoyal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra \nApproximate duration of concert: 90 minutes with no interval
