SUMMARY:Melbourne Opera: Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg
DESCRIPTION:Featuring an international Australian cast\, the new Melbourne Opera production will be conducted by internationally acclaimed Wagner maestro Anthony Negus and directed by Suzanne Chaundy\, the team who delivered Australia’s award-winning first regional production of Wagner’s masterpiece\, The Ring Cycle in Bendigo in 2023. \nFour fully-staged performances of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg will be given in an intimate theatrical setting specially designed to showcase the beautifully restored Royal Exhibition Building\, creating a spectacular environment for Wagner’s epic work. \nWagner’s sublime and profound comedy “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” (The Mastersingers of Nuremberg) premiered in Munich in 1868. The opera is set in 16th-century Nuremberg and revolves around a guild of amateur poets and musicians called the Mastersingers. The story follows the cobbler Hans Sachs\, a wise and respected Mastersinger\, who becomes entangled in a complicated love affair involving a young knight named Walther von Stolzing and a beautiful young woman named Eva. Talented and innovative\, Walther\, an outsider\, impulsively decides to compete in the Mastersingers’ song contest in order to win Eva’s hand. He is up against all sorts of musical pedantry\, especially from rival contestant and Town Clerk\, Sixtus Beckmesser. The visionary Sachs can see the worth and truth in Walther’s songs. Central to the work is Wagner’s belief that political parties come and go; leaders come and go but a community’s art provides the truest measure of its essential values. “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” is known for its rich and intricate music\, which combines Wagner’s signature leitmotif technique with elements of German folk music and choral writing. \nMeistersinger is central to understanding Wagner’s ideas on the role of music in society\, on the renunciation of will and on the solace music can bring in a world full of delusion\, folly\, self-deception. \nConductor: Anthony Negus\nDirector: Suzanne Chaundy \nHans Sachs – Warwick Fyfe\nWalther von Stolzing – James Egglestone\nSixtus Beckmesser – Christopher Hillier\nEva (Pogner’s daughter) – Lee Abrahmsen\nDavid (Sachs’ apprentice) – Robert Macfarlane\nMagdalena (Eva’s companion) – Deborah Humble \nSunday 16 February 2025\, 3pm\nTuesday 18 February 2025\, 5pm\nThursday 20 February 2025\, 5pm\nSaturday 22 February 2025\, 3pm \nSung in German with English surtitles. \nThe performance runs approximately 4 hours 30 minutes\, plus two intervals: \nInterval between Acts 1 & 2\, approx 40 minutes;  between Acts 2 & 3\, approx 60 mnutes \nRoyal Exhibition Building\, Melbourne \nTICKETS: $99 – $289

SUMMARY:Melbourne Opera: Lucia di Lammermoor
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning Greek-Australian soprano Elena Xanthoudakis extends her bel canto repertoire by taking on the starring role in Lucia di Lammermoor\, directed by one of Australia’s most accomplished opera directors Suzanne Chaundy. \nThis new production of Donizetti’s wildly tragic Scottish opera follows Melbourne Opera’s (MO) history-making Ring Cycle Cultural Festival as it is awarded an Outstanding Special Achievement Award at the 2024 Green Room Awards. \nA dramatic and demanding bel canto opera\, Lucia di Lammermoor sees Elena Xanthoudakis and director Suzanne Chaundy reunite\, following their critically acclaimed productions of Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda and Anna Bolena. \nUpon completion of her triumphant three-year Ring Cycle\, Suzanne Chaundy directed a revival of Maria Stuarda in September 2023\, setting the stage for this new production. \nElena Xanthoudakis has performed all over the world\, including recently to great acclaim for the Scottish Opera. She is beyond thrilled to be making her debut as Lucia\, having chosen a Lucia aria for her Jewels of the Bel Canto album\, recorded with the legendary Richard Bonynge. \nSome of Melbourne’s most loved opera singers join Elena in this 1850s set production. Acclaimed baritone Simon Meadows (Alberich in MO’s Ring Cycle) takes on the role of Lucia’s brother Enrico\, while Henry Choo (Leicester in Maria Stuarda) plays her star crossed lover Edgardo. \nOne of Australia’s great bass singers Eddie Muliaumaseali’i (Wotan in MO’s Das Rheingold) performs the role of family Chaplain Raimondo\, with the divinely talented mezzo soprano Sarah Sweeting (Fricka in MO’s Ring Cycle) takes to the stage as Lucia’s household companion Alisa. Lucia’s betrothed Arturo is performed by Robert Macfarlane\, with Boyd Owen as Normanno. \nA string of virtuoso arias and duets and the famous ‘mad scene’ Il dolce suono are just some of the highlights of this great work. The Melbourne Opera Chorus and Orchestra are conducted by bel canto specialist Raymond Lawrence and Melbourne Opera founding patron\, producer and resident conductor Greg Hocking AM\, conducting his first fully staged production since suffering from a stroke in late 2022. \nMelbourne Opera\, which receives no government funding\, stages multiple full-scale productions each year on Melbourne’s main stages. The company gives many young singers and musicians’ invaluable professional experience at the outset of their careers in the company of distinguished experienced artists.
As well as mainstream repertoire\, the company also presents many lesser-known masterpieces. \nWHAT: Lucia di Lammermoor \nWHEN: 7:30pm 8 & 14 May\, 2024 and 2:30pm 18 May\, 2024 \nWHERE: Athenaeum Theatre\, 188 Collins St Melbourne

SUMMARY:Melbourne Opera: The Marriage of Figaro
DESCRIPTION:Mozart’s profound and sublime Marriage of Figaro is set on the wedding day of Susanna and Figaro in the home of the Count and Countess Almaviva. What ensues is a crazy day full of twists and turns as the servants outwit the Count who has dishonourable intentions toward Susanna. Mix this in with a page boy crazy with hormones\, a couple hell bent on revenge against Figaro\, a nosy music master\, a naughty schoolgirl\, a drunk gardener\, and a noble Countess who is much wronged and you have a comedy of intrigue\, misunderstanding and transcendent forgiveness.\nThe Marriage of Figaro\, sung in English\, is being performed by members of the Richard Divall Programme\, Melbourne Opera’s exceptional programme for emerging and developing opera singers. These two performances offer a sneak look at a performance usually staged in private clubs and homes. \n\n\n\nFully costumed in the style of Downton Abbey\, directed by Suzanne Chaundy and with a chamber orchestra under the baton of Raymond Lawrence and Greg Hocking\, this is a unique opportunity to see our future stars of opera in an intimate staging. \nCast \nFigaro                           Henry Shaw\nSusanna                       Caitlin Weal\nDoctor Bartolo              Alex Pokryshevsky*\nMarcellina                     Amanda Windred\nCherubino                     Rachael Joyce\nCount Almaviva            Daniel Felton\nDon Basilio                   Asher Reichman\nCountess Almaviva      Emily Szabo\nAntonio                         Andrew Alesi\nDon Curzio                   James Penn\nBarbarina                      Lily Ward \nGuest artist* \n\nSunday  17 March  3pm\n\nAthenaeum Theatre 2 \nTICKETS: Adult $49.00–$75.00; Concession $30;   General Admission

SUMMARY:Melbourne Opera: The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny
DESCRIPTION:Presented by IOpera and Melbourne Opera\, The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny is a satirical opera which premiered in Germany in 1930. A modern-day parable and an attack on excess\, the eclectic score also draws inspiration from operetta and the jazz-infused popular music of the roaring ‘20’s. Regularly performed in the great opera houses of the world (including recent revivals at Covent Garden and The Met) its criticism of corruption in a world with increasingly shaky moral foundations\, and at war with nature\, makes it more relevant than ever. This is the first Australian production in over forty years. \nComposed by Kurt Weill with a libretto by Bertolt Brecht and Elisabeth Hauptmann – the same team who wrote ‘The Threepenny Opera’ (‘Mack the knife’)\, it features the famous the ‘Alabama Song’ (“Show me the way to the next whisky bar”) and is performed in a new English translation by Jeremy Sams. \nStarring award-winning artists – Antoinette Halloran\, James Egglestone\, Liane Keegan\, Christopher Hillier\, Robert Macfarlane\, Christopher Tonkin\, Fraser Findlay\, Darcy Carroll\, and Alastair Cooper-Golec\, plus a stellar female ensemble\, forty-piece orchestra\, and the Melbourne Opera chorus\, The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny is directed by Suzanne Chaundy and conducted by Peter Tregear.
