SUMMARY:Opera Australia: Breaking the Waves
DESCRIPTION:You have a golden heart\, sometimes too golden\, too good. And who am I to warn you of living a life too honest\, too true? \nLars von Trier’s 1996 film about a young woman’s shocking sacrifices for her husband was an immediate sensation on its premiere\, winning the Grand Prix at Cannes Film Festival. The story of the devout Bess McNeill\, and the stormy Scottish Highland community she belongs to\, resonates deeply with audiences and is now a powerful new opera for our times. \nBess has fallen for Jan\, a handsome foreigner and oil rig worker. Soon after their wedding\, Jan survives a serious accident that sees him paralysed. Bess’s marital vows and unwavering love are put to the test when her husband asks her to sleep with other men and tell him of her sexual activities. Jan’s request puts Bess at odds with her fiercely religious community\, setting in motion a disastrous series of events. \nAs von Trier breaks open the extreme emotional possibilities of cinema\, so does Missy Mazzoli with opera. \nDubbed by Time Out as “Brooklyn’s post-millennial Mozart”\, Mazzoli is one of the most exciting composers working anywhere in the world. Her adaptation of von Trier’s film has been acclaimed as one of the 21st century’s best operas. \nThe film’s unsettling silence becomes a roar of emotion in Mazzoli’s score. The suffocating\, revealing close-ups become richly textured arias. \nAustralian conductor Jessica Cottis and Melbourne Theatre Company Artistic Director Anne-Louise Sarks bring Bess’s story to life in this semi-staged production. \nThe cast is led by the superb Jennifer Black as Bess. Australian-raised baritone Duncan Rock plays Jan\, reprising his acclaimed performance from the opera’s European premiere at Edinburgh International Festival. \nFriday 26 July 7:30 PM\nSunday 28 July CANCELLED\nRunning Time: Approximately 2 hours and 50 minutes\, including one interval. \nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \nTICKETS: Standard$69.00 – $199.00\nChild$34.00 – $179\nStudent & Pensioner$62.00 – $179.00\nGroup 8+$58.00 – $169.00

SUMMARY:Opera Australia: La Traviata
DESCRIPTION:Raise your glass\, bat your pretty lashes\, it’s Paris in the salons and you’re the life of the party. He’s staring at you\, he’s singing for you… Are you tempted? \nVioletta wears velvet and lace and drinks only the finest champagne from crystal glasses. Her parties are legendary\, her company desired. She’s free and free-spirited\, living outside society’s bounds\, and for the courtesan\, it seems like the party will never end. SUMMARY:Rigoletto
DESCRIPTION:From the moment he wrote it\, Verdi knew he had a hit on his hands. The story had everything: royalty\, loyalty\, deformity\, devotion\, lust and revenge. Love and vengeance meet in the darkness and the opera draws to its dramatic\, devastating conclusion. The morning after Rigoletto’s triumphant premiere\, the show’s sensational melody rang out in the streets: a hit for ever after. \nOpera Australia is bringing Elijah Moshinsky’s classic production of Verdi’s Rigoletto back to the Melbourne stage in full La Dolce Vita glamour. Booming baritone and rising opera star\, Mongolian Amartuvshin Enkhbat will make his Australian debut as the clown faced Rigoletto.
