SUMMARY:Omega Ensemble: Distant World
DESCRIPTION:The future of our planet in a world gone mad.\nLatvian composer Pēteris Vasks’ Piano Quartet from 2001 grapples with his familiar themes of a world detached from nature. Contrasting darkness and light\, it reflects the natural world\, and weaves in cherished bird songs. His music portrays a profound catharsis\, historical weight\, and a glimmer of hope for the future. \nA vibrant Australian voice\, Miriama Young’s interactive performance incorporates a soundscape of recordings by young people of personal places in nature\, merging past and present\, physical and metaphysical into a powerful artistic statement. \nWritten in response to devastating bushfires\, Tasmanian composer and saxophonist Jabra Latham’ Fire Music reflects anguish and renewal\, aiming to ‘embody the cyclical nature of life and fire.’ \nArvo Pärt Speigel im Speigel \nJabra Latham Fire Music \nPēteris Vasks Piano Quartet \nMiriama Young New Commission – World Premiere \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday 13 May 2025 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour 30 mins (no interval). SUMMARY:Omega Ensemble: Fatale
DESCRIPTION:Intricate harmonies and sharp textures.\nArguably Johannes Brahms’ most profound chamber work\, the Clarinet Quintet is an energized by rhapsodic\, wild gestures and flickering textures\, and was written as part of the composer’s surprising re-emergence from retirement. \nA musical polyglot in the tradition of Bernstein and Previn\, ARIA Award-winner Joe Chindamo is routinely described as one of the best jazz pianists in Australia\, though his composition transcends jazz\, having composed concertos\, chamber music and film music. \nWith a career spanning over four decades\, first as a clarinettist and then composer of music for the concert hall and film\, Nigel Westlake is one of Australia’s most celebrated composers. From the haunting last chord of the first movement to the elegiac central movement through to the robust cross-rhythms of the finale\, his Piano Trio is revered as one of the composer’s most stunning and accomplished chamber works. \n\nMonday 2 December 2024 7pm \n\nElisabeth Murdoch Hall\n\nDuration: 1 hour 30 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: A reserve $79 ($69 Concession); B reserve $59; C reserve $39 \nGroup 10+ A reserve $59; B reserve $49; C reserve $39 \nUnder 30 $39

SUMMARY:Omega Ensemble – Concertante
DESCRIPTION:Chopin’s raw and reveling piano concerto.\nFrédéric Chopin once wrote: ‘Sometimes I can only groan\, suffer\, and pour out my despair at the piano!’ A great introvert\, Chopin preferred the dark and smoky salons to the grand concert halls of Paris\, and would often perform his own spectacular concertos in the private apartments of friends and patrons accompanied by string ensembles. In this spirit\, Chopin’s first Piano Concerto is performed in a raw and powerful arrangement for just ten musicians. \nAn exciting new voice\, Harry Sdraulig’s name has quickly catapulted into one of the most in-demand Australian composers of his generation\, with commissions from all of Australia’s leading orchestras\, as well as Yo-Yo Ma\, Australian String Quartet\, and Australian Chamber Orchestra. Pushing the Western classical tradition into new directions\, juxtaposes melodic lyricism with intricate rhythmic interplay which draws influences from classical\, jazz\, and popular musical styles. \nA regular on Australian stages as a concert pianist\, Finnish Oli Mustonen is also an accomplished and distinctive composer. Opening with piercing discords and stunted rhythms\, the Nonet II moves through moments of galloping Beethovenian rhythms\, tranquil ostinati\, and Russian flair\, before finally exploding into a heart-racing finale described by the composer as ‘instrumental ecstasy’. \n\nTuesday 1 October 2024 7pm \n\nElisabeth Murdoch Hall\n\nDuration: 1 hour 30 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: A reserve $79 ($69 Concession); B reserve $59; C reserve $39 Under 30 $39

SUMMARY:Omega Ensemble – Échappsodie
DESCRIPTION:French delights and modern beauty.\nAs one of the leading exponents of musical Impressionism\, Debussy’s music represents an extraordinarily beautiful palette of colour and harmonic innovation. Commissioned by the Paris Conservatoire the Premiere Rhapsodie was originally a ‘Solo de Concours’ (competition solo) written to test the virtuosic abilities of students at the Conservatoire. \nLaden with emotional melodies and rich textures\, Gabriel Fauré’s Piano Quintet No. 1 is an expressive work that highlights a groundbreaking change in French chamber music. \nA rising star in both her native Australia and current home in Paris\, Alice Chance’s Échappsodie (a made-up word using the French verb échapper — ‘to escape’) takes fragments of Debussy’s Premiere Rhapsodie and constructs them into a colourful masterclass of virtuosity for clarinet and ensemble. \nOmega Ensemble\nDavid Rowden clarinet; Peter Clark violin; Natalia Harvey violin; Neil Thompson viola\nPaul Stender cello; Vatche Jambazian piano \n\nTuesday 13 February 2024 7pm; MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 20 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: A reserve $79 ($69 Concession); B reserve $59; C reserve $39 \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Omega Ensemble – Lionheart
DESCRIPTION:Quartets quintets\, and sextets… oh my!\nShostakovich’s profound Piano Quintet represents a period of writing where the young composer\, who was then 34\, was his most purely musical. SUMMARY:Omega Ensemble: Ecstatic Dances
DESCRIPTION:Dance\, dance\, otherwise we are lost.\nWhen Ross Edwards composed his first Ecstatic Dance in 1978\, he discovered an idiosyncratic and kinetic way of writing. It was a formative moment\, from which emerged the composers’ iconic and infectiously jubilant style that defined a generation of Australian classical music. In his 80th birthday year\, Omega Ensemble gives the world premiere of a new Clarinet Concerto led by Artistic Director David Rowden. \nAn ode to the infectious spirit of rhythm and dance\, this premiere work is accompanied and Phillip Glass’ epic Violin Concerto No.2\, performed by UK violin maverick Thomas Gould. Entitled ‘The American Four Seasons’\, the legendary composers’ electrifying concerto is a visceral homage to the forces of nature\, packed full of dizzying twists and turns\, turbo-charged drive and heart-stopping intensity. \n\nWednesday 5 July 2023 7pm; MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall;  Duration: 1 hour 30 mins (no interval)wa \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $119\, A reserve $89 ($79 Concession); B reserve $69 ($59 Concession)\nC reserve $49 ($39 Concession); Under 30 $39

SUMMARY:Omega Ensemble – Continuo
DESCRIPTION:Always existed but never heard before.\nSpanning soul-bearing improvisations and exuberant dances\, the Baroque period represented an earth-quaking eruption of ideas and musical expression the aftershocks of which continue to be felt today. SUMMARY:Omega Ensemble – Melodies and Melodrama
DESCRIPTION:The mighty music of Brahms was a great influence on the lesser known Hungarian composer Ernö Dohnányi. While Brahms’ brooding Piano Quartet No.1 (notably premiered by Clara Schumanm) may at first appear restrained compared to the decadence of Dohnányi’s colossal Sextet\, the soaring melodies and sumptuous texture in both works are imbued with equal romantic passion and unabashed melodrama. \nThe finale of Omega Ensemble’s 2022 Season is marked by a new commission from French composer Laurent Lefrançois\, whose works are equally marked by colourful twists and turns. With Dohnanyi’s Sextet featuring some of the most glorious melodic writing for French Horn\, the Ensemble is joined for this performance by Nicolas Fleury\, Principal Horn of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. \n\nThursday 15 December 2022 7pm; MRC Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hours 30 mins (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $69 ($59 Concession); Under 30 $49

SUMMARY:Omega Ensemble: Ex Machina
DESCRIPTION:Aaron Copland’s thrilling Sextet started life as his Second Symphony. However\, following its premiere\, the work was avoided by orchestras due to its complexity. Out of frustration\, Copland re-wrote the work for sextet in the hope that more ambitious chamber ensembles would take up the challenge. \nThis program of music from important American voices presents driving works showcasing the Ensemble as a well-oiled virtuosic machine. Including music from Grammy Award-winning composer Bryce Dessner\, Grammy Award nominee Missy Mazzoli\, and world premieres by Nico Muhly and Pulitzer Prize finalist Christopher Cerrone. \n  \nProgram\nBryce Dessner Aheym\nMissy Mazzoli Harp and Altar\nChristopher Cerrone Clarinet Quintet [World Premiere] \nNico Muhly Measured to Fit [World Premiere]\nAaron Copland Sextet

SUMMARY:Omega Ensemble – Two Breaths
DESCRIPTION:Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart\nClarinet Quintet\, K. 581 \nPeter Sculthorpe\nString Quartet No. 16 \nWilliam Barton\nNew Commission – World Premiere \n‘[Barton is] a musician carving out a powerful musical legacy.’ The Australian\nAbout the concert\nIn 18th-century Vienna\, Mozart befriended the clarinetist Anton Stadler\, whose soft and delicate playing had such a profound impact on the composer that it expanded the possibilities of Mozart’s music and inspired some of his most well-known works for the instrument\, including his cherished Clarinet Quintet. Over two centuries later\, it was William Barton’s grounding and deeply moving didgeridoo playing that elicited an oeuvre of work from legendary Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe\, with the late composer commenting ‘William offered me a new direction’. \nFeaturing Mozart’s ever-popular Clarinet Quintet and Sculthorpe’s arresting String Quartet No. 16 (including Barton on didgeridoo)\, Omega Ensemble’s triumphant 2022 Season is marked by the world premiere of a new commission by William Barton for didgeridoo\, clarinet and string quartet.

SUMMARY:Omega Ensemble: Russian Romantics
DESCRIPTION:A spectacular face-off between giants of Russian Romanticism \nProgram\n\nNikolai Rimsky-Korsakov Quintet for Piano and Winds in B-flat major \nAnton Rubinstein Quintet for Piano and Winds in F major \nSergei Rachmaninoff Preludes [Selections] \n\nAbout The Music\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClosing the 2020 Season with Romantic colour and bravura\, acclaimed Australian pianist Clemens Leske leads the Ensemble in a program that puts two Russian masterworks for piano and winds head-to-head. \nA rare example of Rimsky-Korsakov’s departure from orchestral writing\, the attention-grabbing Quintet for Piano and Winds embodies the powerful rhythms and boastful textures of the composer’s larger works jam-packed into an ensemble of just five. Anton Rubinstein’s work of the same name presents itself as a strong challenger\, in which the virtuosic piano writing amply reflects the composer’s recognition in his own lifetime as one of the world’s greatest pianists. \nThese works are accompanied by selections from Rachmaninoff’s dazzling Preludes.
