SUMMARY:Musica Viva: Garrick Ohlsson
DESCRIPTION:A titan of the piano returns in Garrick Ohlsson. Virtuosic yet powerful\, Ohlsson showcases his favourite composers while debuting a world premiere by Australian Thomas Misson.\nIn 1970 Garrick Ohlsson – a gangly pianist from White Plains\, New York\, all of 22 and unknown beyond his hometown – pulled off an astonishing feat: from nowhere he won the Chopin Competition in Warsaw\, the only American to have done so. He somehow missed the announcement\, a kindly audience member informing him that his life would never be quite the same. \nIn the subsequent 50 years Ohlsson has owned Chopin’s music like few others\, playing it with authority\, humility\, a sense of discovery and deep commitment. \nOhlsson has other heroes too. Scriabin is one such example\, his powerful\, impressionistic music an ideal match for Ohlsson’s authoritative playing. He adores Barber and Schubert\, Debussy and Liszt too\, choosing this Australian tour for his first performance of the latter’s Sonata in B Minor in many years. His program also features a new work by the Australian composer Thomas Mission. \nSaturday 3 Program:  Franz Schubert: Impromptu in C Minor\, Op.90\, No.1; \nFranz Liszt: Piano Sonata in B Minor\, S.178;  Thomas Misson: New Work \nAlexander Scriabin: Étude in C-Sharp Minor\, Op.2\, No.1; Étude in D-Flat\, Op.8\, No.10; Étude in C-Sharp Minor\, Op.42\, No.5; Two Poems\, Op.32: Andante cantabile; Piano Sonata No.5\, Op.5 \nTuesday 13 Program: Claude Debussy: Suite bergamasque; Samuel Barber: Piano Sonata in E-Flat Minor\, Op.26 \nThomas Misson: New Work; Frédéric Chopin:  Variations brillantes\, Op.12; Piano Sonata No.1 in C Minor\, Op.4: Larghetto; Scherzo No.2 in B-Flat Minor\, Op.31 \n\nSaturday 3 & Tuesday 13 June 2023 7pm; Elisabeth Murdoch Hall; Duration: 1 hour 40 mins (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $158 ($134 Concession); A reserve $126 ($110 Concession); B reserve $95 ($82 Concession)\nC reserve $66 ($58 Concession); Under 40: A – C reserve $40

SUMMARY:A Winter's Journey
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Musica Viva Australia\, tenor Allan Clayton and pianist Kate Golla perform Schubert’s immortal songs of love and loss\, newly reinterpreted for Australia through Lindy Hume’s direction and Fred Williams’ wondrous landscape paintings.\nAbout the concert\nIn 1827 Franz Schubert composed an emotionally charged song cycle. Setting poems of the German writer Wilhelm Müller\, Schubert created an emotional journey of a man trekking across frozen rivers and snowy landscapes\, lamenting his lost love. It is indeed a winter’s journey (Winterreise)\, full of images and metaphors of love\, loss\, nationhood. \nA Winter’s Journey is a new staging by Musica Viva Australia of Schubert’s iconic songs\, bringing a very different winter into focus\, set against a backdrop of Australian painter Fred Willliams’ vivid landscapes. \nAcclaimed stage director Lindy Hume is our cartographer\, mapping the terrain of heart and country for the gripping stage charisma of English tenor Allan Clayton and sensitive musicianship of Australian pianist Kate Golla. Videographer Dave Bergman provides the backdrop\, bringing to life 24 Williams paintings that match and contradict Müller’s poems and Schubert’s musical imagination\, all in gorgeous larger-than-life imagery. \nThis powerful artistic combination sets the perfect conditions to experience Schubert’s immortal masterpiece – songs of love and loss that still speak to us vividly\, in this far distant time and place. \n\nSaturday 16 & Tuesday 19 July 2022 7pm\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval) \n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $49\, Under 40 $40\n\n\nFamily of Four $100 (2 adults + 2 children OR 1 adult + 3 children) \nSeason Packages available now from Musica Viva.

For centuries\, generations of musicians wrote dances and masses\, symphonies and quartets\, as their homelands changed ownership under their feet. Or their nations remained steadfast\, allowing the most magical cultural overlaps at the border fringes. \nThrough composers such as Samuel Scheidt and Dietrich Becker\, you will hear the trials of battle – loss\, regret\, resentment – and\, at long last\, healing. Listen to composers who were touched by the Thirty Years’ War within the Holy Roman Empire\, their countries crumbling around them. \nMaría Huld Markan Sigfúsdóttir (Iceland) and Donald Nicolson (Australia) are living composers who will bring you closer to our time. Just as Van Diemen’s Band invites instrumental guests from across Australia’s state borders\, these composers remind us how we’re still united through music – no matter what borders lie between us. \n\nTuesday 3 May & Saturday 14 May 2022 7pm \n\nElisabeth Murdoch Hall\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\nPremium $153 ($133 Concession)\nA Reserve $122 ($107 Concession)\nB Reserve $92 ($80 Concession)\nC Reserve $64 ($56 Concession) \nFamily of Four\n$100 (2 adults + 2 children OR 1 adult + 3 children) \nUnder 40\n$40 \nSeason Packages available now from Musica Viva.

SUMMARY:Musica Viva: Partridge String Quartet and James Morley
DESCRIPTION:Program\nHolly Harrison\nBalderdash \nFranz Schubert\nString Quintet in C \nMusica Viva Australia’s current FutureMakers\, the brilliant Partridge Quartet\, are sure to wow audiences with this knockout of a program.\nJoined by guest violinist Jos Jonker and cellist Daniel Smith\, the players’ preternatural rapport\, formidable musicianship\, and gusto for performance will make this an unforgettable experience. \nAbout the concert\nThe concert opens with Holly Harrison’s Balderdash\, commissioned for the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition and receiving another well-deserved hearing here. A highly theatrical piece\, Balderdash explores musical ideas inspired by the electric guitar\, including distortion\, white noise\, and power-chords. Making use of punk-rock rhythms\, dissonance\, and percussive-based jams\, it encourages the traditional string quartet to behave like something of a rock band\, interrupting\, challenging\, and engaging in one-upmanship with each other. Influences as disparate as bluegrass\, grunge\, prog-rock\, metal\, and disco coalesce into something utterly unique. \nSchubert’s String Quintet in C Major couldn’t be more different. The composer’s final chamber work\, it is simply sublime and symphonic in scope\, helping to redefine at time of writing what a small string ensemble could accomplish. Impassioned and serene in equal measure\, the work constantly shifts in tone\, mood\, and colour\, but never loses its sense of quiet beauty. \n\nTuesday 1 March 2022 7pm & Saturday 5 March 7pm 2022 \n\nElisabeth Murdoch Hall\n\nDuration: 1 hours 15 mins (no interval) \n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\nPremium $153 ($133 Concession)\nA Reserve $122 ($107 Concession)\nB Reserve $92 ($80 Concession)\nC Reserve $64 ($56 Concession)\nUnder 40 $40

DESCRIPTION:Saturday 3 November\, 7pm\nTuesday 20 November\, 7pm \nNicola Benedetti violin\nLeonard Elschenbroich cello\nAlexei Grynyuk piano \nWhen is a trio not just a trio? When it is this one\, comprising three stellar soloists. In their Southern Hemisphere debut\, the matchless combined talents of Nicola Benedetti\, Leonard Elschenbroich and Alexei Grynyuk will light up the stage. This is chamber music made by an A-team of young guns; and played with love\, because they insist on making room for its presence in their busy solo schedules. \nGiven who they are\, this ensemble’s program is more than just trios. Instead\, it offers a diversity of forms\, and a chance to better appreciate each performer\, in works for accompanied violin and cello. However\, their joy in playing in threes shines through in this arresting end to the Musica Viva season with two of the great masterworks of the trio repertoire by Brahms and Ravel. \n\nPROGRAM ONE\nMelbourne Weekend\, Brisbane\, Sydney Weekend\, Newcastle \nR STRAUSS Sonata for Cello and Piano in F major\nR STRAUSS Sonata for Violin and Piano in E-flat major\nGordon KERRY (b 1961) Piano Trio no 2 Im Winde\nBRAHMS Piano Trio no 2 in C major\, op 87 \nPROGRAM TWO\nPerth\, Sydney Weekday\, Canberra\, Adelaide\, Melbourne Weekday \nPROKOFIEV Cello Sonata\nPROKOFIEV Violin Sonata no 2\nGordon KERRY (b 1961) Piano Trio no 2 Im Winde\nRAVEL Piano Trio
