He sings in a warm\, resonant\, melancholic baritone\, which coasts upward into a plaintive falsetto. SUMMARY:Musica Viva Australia – The Choir of King's College\, Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:Top hats and heavenly voices. \nEvery year on Christmas Eve\, millions of listeners around the world tune in to hear The Choir of King’s College\, Cambridge celebrate the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols in a glorious display of the British choral tradition. Now this unique and precious sound\, the product of generations of voices and centuries of music\, returns to Australia for a  featuring some of their best-loved repertoire.  \nAlongside traditional hymns and soaring anthems\, the Choir will perform Stravinsky’s Mass for choir and double wind quintet\, his searing and deeply personal search for meaning\, and a touchstone of the choral repertoire. \nIt’s not all top hats and heavenly voices: just as boys grow up and voices change\, the Choir’s work changes across the generations. Which is why Daniel Hyde\, Director since 2019\, asked us what the Choir of King’s College\, Cambridge might bring to Australia\, and what they might learn from us. Integral to their performance is a new work commissioned by Australian composer Damian Barbeler\, working with a text by Judith Nangala Crispin (a descendent of the Bpangerang people)\, which grapples with threads of history to come up with something new and compelling.  \nMeet the Artists \nFollowing the concert\, please join The Choir of King’s College\, Cambridge for a post-concert discussion onstage in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall. \nTuesday 23 July 2024 7pm \nMelbourne Recital Centre\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 45 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \nTickets: Premium $141 ($128 Concession); A reserve $115 ($102 Concession); B reserve $87 ($76 Concession); C reserve $62 ($55 Concession)\nUnder 40 $40

SUMMARY:Musica Viva Australia – Kirill Gerstein
DESCRIPTION:The Art of the Impossible.\nKirill Gerstein is a showman\, philosopher\, and poet of the piano. He grew up playing jazz\, switched to classical\, and won the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition at just 22. Since then he has carved out a formidable reputation as a fearless artist who makes the impossible sound easy. \nFor his Melbourne concerts\, he is scaling new heights of virtuosity: Liszt’s power Polonaise in E and Schumann’s Viennese romp\, Carnival of Vienna\, and the wildly difficult\, wildly entertaining transcriptions of eccentric piano nerd\, Leopold Godowsky. In the same program\, he dives deep into the profundity of Chopin’s Polonaise Fantasie and gives the world premiere of Transcendental Etude\, a new commission from Australian Liza Lim. \n‘A peerless performer\, with so much to express’ – Guardian  \n‘uncanny delicacy in one episode and gnashing power the next’ – The New York Times \n\nTuesday 11 June 2024 7pm;   MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $141 ($128 Concession); A reserve $115 ($102 Concession); B reserve $87 ($76 Concession)\nC reserve $62 ($55 Concession); Under 40 $40

SUMMARY:Musica Viva Australia: Esmé Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Eloquent. Spellbinding. Monumental. Exquisite.\nHow else can we describe the Esmé Quartet? This young German-based\, largely South Korean ensemble launched their international career by winning first prize at the 2018 International String Quartet Competition at London’s Wigmore Hall. They then embarked on a whirlwind year of concerts in North America\, Hong Kong\, and Japan. \nFor their Australian debut\, they play works that are the epitome of youth: an early work of Webern overflows with romantic invention\, while Mendelssohn’s second String Quartet blazes with the heart-on-sleeve emotion of a teenage genius; and young Australian composer Jack Frerer’s Spiral Sequences is an exhilarating roller-coaster ride. Add to this Claude Debussy’s only string quartet\, brimming with rhythmic and harmonic invention. \nEsmé comes from the medieval French word for ‘beloved’. Be among the first to discover why everyone loves Esmé. \n\nTuesday 14 May 2024 7pm   MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $141 ($128 Concession); A reserve $115 ($102 Concession); B reserve $87 ($76 Concession)\nC reserve $62 ($55 Concession)

SUMMARY:Musica Viva Australia – Long Lost Loves (and Grey Suede Gloves)
DESCRIPTION:A picture paints a thousand words\, but music makes you feel…\nJoin mezzo-soprano Anna Dowsley and pianist Michael Curtain for an evening of storytelling over the piano\, inspired by the work of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer William Bolcom\, devised by Paul Kildea and Ian Dickson\, and written and directed by Constantine Costi. \nWilliam Bolcom\, who just celebrated his 85th birthday\, occupies a unique place in the repertoire. Not quite art song\, not quite cabaret\, his settings of Arnold Weinstein’s deliciously dry lyrics continue a grand tradition stretching from Schubert to Sondheim of making words dance\, fly\, and sing. \nA poignant meditation on life\, love and living in the moment. \n\nTuesday 5 March 2024 7pm;   MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 10 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $141 ($128 Concession); A reserve $115 ($102 Concession); B reserve $87 ($76 Concession)\nC reserve $62 ($55 Concession); Under 40: $40

SUMMARY:Musica Viva: Vision String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:An Australian debut for Vision String Quartet – a crack ensemble from Berlin that performs from memory\, offering a deeper\, more immersive experience for audiences.\nThe conductor Jeffrey Tate once described the string quartet as ‘the most perfect expression of human behaviour’. Composers from Haydn to Adès have revelled in this most intimate and virtuosic of musical forms\, awed by the sight of four musicians moving across a tightrope at speed. \nThe four young musicians that make up the Vision String Quartet add one extra element to this dextrous feat: they perform everything from memory. Repertory that might be familiar – Bartók’s astonishing Quartet No.4\, say\, or Dvořák’s Quartet No.13 – is utterly transformed. \nThis prizewinning Berlin-based quartet – praised as ‘amazingly vivacious\, vivid and electrifying … completely fearless’ by Der Tagesspiegel – has gathered fans aplenty across Europe since forming in 2012\, and here makes its thrilling Australian debut. \n\nSaturday 23 September & Tuesday 10 October 2023 7pm;     MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $158 ($134 Concession); A reserve $126 ($110 Concession); B reserve $95 ($82 Concession)\nC reserve $66 ($58 Concession) Under 40 A – C reserve $40

Where Bartók’s Fourth String Quartet has a muscular\, driving power\, Haydn’s String Quartet in F Major is a diaphanous beauty\, akin to a serenade. Both are unforgettable\, especially when played by such vibrant musicians. \nTuesday September 5\, 11am \nTHE EDGE\, FED SQUARE Swanston St & Flinders St\, Melbourne VIC 3000 \nTICKETS: $4.80 – $10

DESCRIPTION:Come along for a surprising and joyous journey traversing traditional and modern works. Global stars and a global instrument combine in a performance to delight.\nThis program started with an invitation to the fascinating French cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras – a human vessel of his instrument’s soulful beauty\, and a musician known for his sense of artistic adventure. He leapt at the chance to work with one of Australia’s musical treasures: Satsuki Odamura\, a grand master of the koto – a plucked Japanese zither – resident in Sydney for more than 30 years. They welcomed one of Adelaide’s young stars\, cellist James Morley\, into the mix – a trio of passionate musicians inspired by the love of their instruments and an endless delighted curiosity for finding new sounds to play. \nSuch a gorgeous palette of colours and textures is inspiration for Australian composer Jakub Jankowski\, who will create a brand-new trio for them\, nestled amongst solo suites by Bach and Britten\, traditional and modern works for koto\, and a gleeful duo from Offenbach. \n\nTuesday 15 & Saturday 26 August 2023 7pm;  MRC  Elisabeth Murdoch Hall;   Duration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $158 ($134 Concession); A reserve $126 ($110 Concession); B reserve $95 ($82 Concession)\nC reserve $66 ($58 Concession); Under 40 A – C reserve $40

SUMMARY:Musica Viva: Chopin's Piano
DESCRIPTION:A sprinkling of history and theatre within virtuoso playing and masterful storytelling\, pianist Aura Go brings this masterpiece to life alongside actor Jennifer Vuletic.\nCan a single instrument unlock the DNA of Romantic music? A small\, craftsman’s pianino\, built in Majorca in the 1830s\, gives it a good try: it’s the keyboard on which Chopin completed his Preludes. This exquisite collection reclaimed an intimacy that had been drowned out by the excesses of Chopin’s brilliant peers. It would take 50 years\, but these miniatures would eventually outflank and outrank many of the century’s hulking musical monuments. \nIf this were not enough\, Chopin’s piano took on talismanic qualities in the following century. The cast of characters obsessed with its provenance\, heritage and symbolism – from harpsichordist Wanda Landowska to Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels – completes this miraculous story. \nIn this captivating staging by Richard Pyros – first filmed and streamed in 2021 – and with the complete Preludes as its backbone\, pianist Aura Go and actor Jennifer Vuletic tell the story of this singular instrument\, the works composed on it and the artist who created them\, and the changing value of music over time. \n\nSaturday 8 & Tuesday 11 July 2023 7pm; MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall;  Duration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $158 ($134 Concession); A reserve $126 ($110 Concession); B reserve $95 ($82 Concession)\nC reserve $66 ($58 Concession); Under 40 A – C reserve $40

SUMMARY:Musica Viva: Garrick Ohlsson
DESCRIPTION:A titan of the piano returns in Garrick Ohlsson. Virtuosic yet powerful\, Ohlsson showcases his favourite composers while debuting a world premiere by Australian Thomas Misson.\nIn 1970 Garrick Ohlsson – a gangly pianist from White Plains\, New York\, all of 22 and unknown beyond his hometown – pulled off an astonishing feat: from nowhere he won the Chopin Competition in Warsaw\, the only American to have done so. He somehow missed the announcement\, a kindly audience member informing him that his life would never be quite the same. \nIn the subsequent 50 years Ohlsson has owned Chopin’s music like few others\, playing it with authority\, humility\, a sense of discovery and deep commitment. \nOhlsson has other heroes too. Scriabin is one such example\, his powerful\, impressionistic music an ideal match for Ohlsson’s authoritative playing. He adores Barber and Schubert\, Debussy and Liszt too\, choosing this Australian tour for his first performance of the latter’s Sonata in B Minor in many years.
His program also features a new work by the Australian composer Thomas Mission. \nSaturday 3 Program:  Franz Schubert: Impromptu in C Minor\, Op.90\, No.1; \nFranz Liszt: Piano Sonata in B Minor\, S.178;  Thomas Misson: New Work \nAlexander Scriabin: Étude in C-Sharp Minor\, Op.2\, No.1; Étude in D-Flat\, Op.8\, No.10; Étude in C-Sharp Minor\, Op.42\, No.5; Two Poems\, Op.32: Andante cantabile; Piano Sonata No.5\, Op.5 \nTuesday 13 Program: Claude Debussy: Suite bergamasque; Samuel Barber: Piano Sonata in E-Flat Minor\, Op.26 \nThomas Misson: New Work; Frédéric Chopin:  Variations brillantes\, Op.12; Piano Sonata No.1 in C Minor\, Op.4: Larghetto; Scherzo No.2 in B-Flat Minor\, Op.31 \n\nSaturday 3 & Tuesday 13 June 2023 7pm; Elisabeth Murdoch Hall; Duration: 1 hour 40 mins (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $158 ($134 Concession); A reserve $126 ($110 Concession); B reserve $95 ($82 Concession)\nC reserve $66 ($58 Concession); Under 40: A – C reserve $40
