SUMMARY:Musica Viva Australia and Opera Australia A Winter's Journey
DESCRIPTION:Following triumphant performances in Australia and the UK\, Musica Viva Australia is thrilled to present A Winter’s Journey.\nA Winter’s Journey is a reimagining of Franz Schubert’s Winterreise\, a collection of songs mapping a winding path from love to despair\, anger and hope. Lindy Hume directs acclaimed British tenor Allan Clayton and Australian pianist Kate Golla. Central to the drama are video projections created by David Bergman (The Picture of Dorian Gray\, Dracula) who uses iconic artist Fred Williams’ glowing visions of Australia to create a landscape of the emotions. \nSince his Australian debut as Hamlet at the Adelaide Festival in 2018\, Allan Clayton’s star has continued to soar: Peter Grimes at the Met\, Hamlet in New York\, Berlin and Sydney\, and the 2025 Olivier Award for outstanding achievement in opera. It’s therefore a special treat to hear of the most outstanding singers of his generation alongside acclaimed pianist Kate Golla performing Schubert’s poignant song cycle in this unique presentation. \nAllan Clayton MBE tenor\nKate Golla piano\nLindy Hume AM director\nDavid Bergman visual design\nMatthew Marshall lighting designer \n‘[Clayton’s Winterreise is] an interpretation every bit as memorable as Clayton’s Peter Grimes and his Hamlet. SUMMARY:Musica Viva Australia: Piotr Anderszewski
DESCRIPTION:Beethoven\, Brahms and Bach.\nIconoclastic pianist Piotr Anderszewski brings his intelligence\, restless curiosity and joy to piano repertoire from Brahms and Bach. Get ready for a whole new spectrum of nuance and expression from an unconventional hero of the keyboard. \nEveryone agrees: Piotr Anderszewski is no ordinary pianist. While he is famously exacting – he walked out of the Leeds Piano Competition in 1990 because he was unhappy with his playing – he’s also refreshingly open about his struggles with the anxiety and loneliness of performing as a soloist. But once he gets on stage\, Anderszewski brings an intense curiosity and spectacular virtuosity to everything he plays. \nFresh from triumphant performances at the 2025 Edinburgh Festival\, Anderszewski will be giving a series of solo recitals across Australia. This is a rare opportunity to catch a genius at work as he draws unimagined delights and unexpected insights from the keyboard. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday 18 November 2025 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour 50 mins (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Musica Viva Australia: Trio Isimsiz
DESCRIPTION:Trio Isimsiz perform piano works by Schubert and Brahms alongside a striking new work from Francisco Coll.\nWhat’s in a name? Trio Isimsiz’s name comes from the Turkish for ‘without name’ or ‘anonymous’. In other words\, for Trio Isimsiz\, it is all about the music. \nPianist Erdem Mısırlıoğlu\, violinist Pablo Hernán Benedí\, and cellist Edvard Pogossian met at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2008. They’ve since toured China and Argentina\, and performed at venues such as Tivoli Concert Hall and Snape Maltings. \nTrio Isimsiz will perform two giants of the piano trio repertoire. Schubert’s Piano Trio No.1 is a chamber work of grand scale\, yet full of intimacy and lightness. Brahms’ Piano Trio is\, in the words of cellist Edvard Pogossian\, ‘the greatest piece of all time… filled with passion\, love\, nostalgia\, and loneliness.’ Tucked between these masterpieces is the Australian premiere of Francisco Coll’s inventive Piano Trio\, hailed as ‘ear-beguiling and starkly inventive’ by The Strad. \nThree outstanding musicians\, three individual voices\, one ensemble. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday 07 October 2025 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Musica Viva Australia: Mozart's Clarinet
DESCRIPTION:The Spirit of Invention.\nVienna\, 1785. Johann Friedrich Schink is blown away by a new work featuring the clarinet and basset horn. ‘Oh\, what a glorious effect it made – glorious and great\, excellent and sublime!’ he writes of Mozart’s Serenade ‘Gran Partita’. \nEighteenth-century Vienna was alive with musical inventions. The clarinet\, basset horn\, and fortepiano were expanding the possibilities for composers like Mozart and the young Ludwig van Beethoven. \nPerformers and early music scholars Nicola Boud\, Simon Cobcroft\, and Erin Helyard bring their infectious enthusiasm for 18th-century innovation to the much-loved chamber music of these trailblazing composers. \nTravel back to the future with three dynamic artists to hear these glorious works as if for the first time. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday 22 July 2025 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval). DESCRIPTION:Swedish-Norwegian violinist Johan Dalene makes his Australian debut alongside much-loved pianist Jennifer Marten-Smith.\nSwedish-Norwegian violinist Johan Dalene grabbed the world’s attention when he won the prestigious Carl Nielsen International Competition in 2019\, and he has just been named Artist-in-Residence with London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra\, where he will perform concertos by Prokofiev\, Tchaikovsky\, and Nielsen in their 2025 season. Now\, this charismatic performer makes his Australian debut alongside the much-loved pianist Jennifer Marten-Smith. \nDalene presents a program imbued with romance and virtuosity. Ravel’s Tzigane dazzles with Romani fire and Hungarian rhythms\, while Beethoven’s Sonata No.8 explodes with joy. Grieg’s Sonata No.2 battles a Nordic chill through Norwegian folk dances\, Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir d’un lieu cher aches with nostalgia\, and Lili Boulanger’s D’un matin de printemps brims with quiet resilience. SUMMARY:Musica Viva Australia: Hollywood Songbook
DESCRIPTION:Signum Saxophone Quartet and Ali McGregor.\nThe musicians of the Signum Saxophone Quartet\, who won hearts across Australia on their debut tour\, return with a new collaborator—Ali McGregor\, the opera star turned cabaret queen. \nTogether\, they embark on a journey from Berlin to Hollywood\, stopping at a shadowy nightclub\, a Shakespearean tragedy\, a Broadway musical\, and even a Wild West rodeo\, before finally arriving somewhere over the rainbow. \nThe first half of the 20th century was a time of radical change—socially\, politically\, and artistically. While history books tell one version\, artists\, composers\, and performers offer another. As Musica Viva Australia reflects on 80 years of sharing these stories\, music takes us on a journey from moody monochrome to vibrant technicolour\, and from introspective darkness to blazing hope. \n★★★★★ ‘[Signum Saxophone Quartet] brought to bear a seemingly endless variety of tonal colour and effects. SUMMARY:Musica Viva Australia: The Cage Project
DESCRIPTION:A mesmerising spectacle for ears and eyes.\nAustralian percussionist\, composer\, and sound artist Matthias Schack-Arnott collaborates with acclaimed French pianist Cédric Tiberghien on John Cage’s Sonatas and Interludes of 1948. \nKnown for his unique approach to sound\, Schack-Arnott creates sculptural musical worlds that are beautifully lit and dramatically staged. In The Cage Project\, he reimagines Cage’s iconic prepared piano work\, augmenting it with a massive kinetic sound sculpture that floats above the piano\, dancing in synchronicity with Tiberghien’s exquisite playing. \nA pioneer in percussive development\, Cage used the prepared piano to expand the instrument’s sonic possibilities. More than 70 years later\, The Cage Project transforms it into a three dimensional sculptural world\, with Tiberghien at its heart. \nPremiered at the 2023 Adelaide and Perth Festivals\, The Cage Project was described by Limelight as ‘engagingly playful\, richly emotional and deeply meditative.’ Now\, audiences in Canberra\, Melbourne\, and Sydney can experience its magic. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday 04 February 2025 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour 10 mins (no interval). SUMMARY:Musica Viva Australia – The Choir of King's College\, Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:Top hats and heavenly voices. \nEvery year on Christmas Eve\, millions of listeners around the world tune in to hear The Choir of King’s College\, Cambridge celebrate the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols in a glorious display of the British choral tradition. Now this unique and precious sound\, the product of generations of voices and centuries of music\, returns to Australia for a  featuring some of their best-loved repertoire.  \nAlongside traditional hymns and soaring anthems\, the Choir will perform Stravinsky’s Mass for choir and double wind quintet\, his searing and deeply personal search for meaning\, and a touchstone of the choral repertoire. \nIt’s not all top hats and heavenly voices: just as boys grow up and voices change\, the Choir’s work changes across the generations. Which is why Daniel Hyde\, Director since 2019\, asked us what the Choir of King’s College\, Cambridge might bring to Australia\, and what they might learn from us. Integral to their performance is a new work commissioned by Australian composer Damian Barbeler\, working with a text by Judith Nangala Crispin (a descendent of the Bpangerang people)\, which grapples with threads of history to come up with something new and compelling.  \nMeet the Artists \nFollowing the concert\, please join The Choir of King’s College\, Cambridge for a post-concert discussion onstage in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall. \nTuesday 23 July 2024 7pm \nMelbourne Recital Centre\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 45 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \nTickets: Premium $141 ($128 Concession); A reserve $115 ($102 Concession); B reserve $87 ($76 Concession); C reserve $62 ($55 Concession)\nUnder 40 $40

SUMMARY:Musica Viva Australia – Kirill Gerstein
DESCRIPTION:The Art of the Impossible.\nKirill Gerstein is a showman\, philosopher\, and poet of the piano. He grew up playing jazz\, switched to classical\, and won the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition at just 22. Since then he has carved out a formidable reputation as a fearless artist who makes the impossible sound easy. \nFor his Melbourne concerts\, he is scaling new heights of virtuosity: Liszt’s power Polonaise in E and Schumann’s Viennese romp\, Carnival of Vienna\, and the wildly difficult\, wildly entertaining transcriptions of eccentric piano nerd\, Leopold Godowsky. In the same program\, he dives deep into the profundity of Chopin’s Polonaise Fantasie and gives the world premiere of Transcendental Etude\, a new commission from Australian Liza Lim. \n‘A peerless performer\, with so much to express’ – Guardian  \n‘uncanny delicacy in one episode and gnashing power the next’ – The New York Times \n\nTuesday 11 June 2024 7pm;   MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $141 ($128 Concession); A reserve $115 ($102 Concession); B reserve $87 ($76 Concession)\nC reserve $62 ($55 Concession); Under 40 $40

SUMMARY:Musica Viva Australia: Esmé Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Eloquent. Spellbinding. Monumental. Exquisite.\nHow else can we describe the Esmé Quartet? This young German-based\, largely South Korean ensemble launched their international career by winning first prize at the 2018 International String Quartet Competition at London’s Wigmore Hall. They then embarked on a whirlwind year of concerts in North America\, Hong Kong\, and Japan. \nFor their Australian debut\, they play works that are the epitome of youth: an early work of Webern overflows with romantic invention\, while Mendelssohn’s second String Quartet blazes with the heart-on-sleeve emotion of a teenage genius; and young Australian composer Jack Frerer’s Spiral Sequences is an exhilarating roller-coaster ride. Add to this Claude Debussy’s only string quartet\, brimming with rhythmic and harmonic invention. \nEsmé comes from the medieval French word for ‘beloved’. Be among the first to discover why everyone loves Esmé. \n\nTuesday 14 May 2024 7pm   MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $141 ($128 Concession); A reserve $115 ($102 Concession); B reserve $87 ($76 Concession)\nC reserve $62 ($55 Concession)

SUMMARY:Musica Viva Australia – Long Lost Loves (and Grey Suede Gloves)
DESCRIPTION:A picture paints a thousand words\, but music makes you feel…\nJoin mezzo-soprano Anna Dowsley and pianist Michael Curtain for an evening of storytelling over the piano\, inspired by the work of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer William Bolcom\, devised by Paul Kildea and Ian Dickson\, and written and directed by Constantine Costi. \nWilliam Bolcom\, who just celebrated his 85th birthday\, occupies a unique place in the repertoire. Not quite art song\, not quite cabaret\, his settings of Arnold Weinstein’s deliciously dry lyrics continue a grand tradition stretching from Schubert to Sondheim of making words dance\, fly\, and sing. \nA poignant meditation on life\, love and living in the moment. \n\nTuesday 5 March 2024 7pm;   MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 10 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $141 ($128 Concession); A reserve $115 ($102 Concession); B reserve $87 ($76 Concession)\nC reserve $62 ($55 Concession); Under 40: $40

SUMMARY:Musica Viva Australia: Silk\, Metal\, Wood
DESCRIPTION:Come along for a surprising and joyous journey traversing traditional and modern works. Global stars and a global instrument combine in a performance to delight.\nThis program started with an invitation to the fascinating French cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras – a human vessel of his instrument’s soulful beauty\, and a musician known for his sense of artistic adventure. He leapt at the chance to work with one of Australia’s musical treasures: Satsuki Odamura\, a grand master of the koto – a plucked Japanese zither – resident in Sydney for more than 30 years. They welcomed one of Adelaide’s young stars\, cellist James Morley\, into the mix – a trio of passionate musicians inspired by the love of their instruments and an endless delighted curiosity for finding new sounds to play. \nSuch a gorgeous palette of colours and textures is inspiration for Australian composer Jakub Jankowski\, who will create a brand-new trio for them\, nestled amongst solo suites by Bach and Britten\, traditional and modern works for koto\, and a gleeful duo from Offenbach. \n\nTuesday 15 & Saturday 26 August 2023 7pm;  MRC  Elisabeth Murdoch Hall;   Duration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $158 ($134 Concession); A reserve $126 ($110 Concession); B reserve $95 ($82 Concession)\nC reserve $66 ($58 Concession); Under 40 A – C reserve $40

SUMMARY:Musica Viva: Chopin's Piano
DESCRIPTION:A sprinkling of history and theatre within virtuoso playing and masterful storytelling\, pianist Aura Go brings this masterpiece to life alongside actor Jennifer Vuletic.\nCan a single instrument unlock the DNA of Romantic music? A small\, craftsman’s pianino\, built in Majorca in the 1830s\, gives it a good try: it’s the keyboard on which Chopin completed his Preludes. This exquisite collection reclaimed an intimacy that had been drowned out by the excesses of Chopin’s brilliant peers. It would take 50 years\, but these miniatures would eventually outflank and outrank many of the century’s hulking musical monuments. \nIf this were not enough\, Chopin’s piano took on talismanic qualities in the following century. The cast of characters obsessed with its provenance\, heritage and symbolism – from harpsichordist Wanda Landowska to Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels – completes this miraculous story. \nIn this captivating staging by Richard Pyros – first filmed and streamed in 2021 – and with the complete Preludes as its backbone\, pianist Aura Go and actor Jennifer Vuletic tell the story of this singular instrument\, the works composed on it and the artist who created them\, and the changing value of music over time. \n\nSaturday 8 & Tuesday 11 July 2023 7pm; MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall;  Duration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $158 ($134 Concession); A reserve $126 ($110 Concession); B reserve $95 ($82 Concession)\nC reserve $66 ($58 Concession); Under 40 A – C reserve $40
