SUMMARY:Songmakers Australia and Polyphonic Voices: Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle
DESCRIPTION:Neither small nor especially solemn\, the ironically titled ‘Petite Messe Solennelle’ is the last major work of the 19th century Italian composer Gioachino Rossini\, better known both then and now as an exponent of the secular opera buffa. Rossini himself queried on the final page of the manuscript: ‘Have I just written sacred music\, or rather\, sacrilegious music?’ \nWhile he did later orchestrate the piece\, the composer was known to prefer this original chamber version\, scored unusually for piano\, harmonium\, four solo singers and small chorus\, which brings the theatrical flair and colour of his operatic works to the sacred text of the Latin mass. \nSongmakers Australia\nSoprano | Merlyn Quaife\nMezzo | Christina Wilson\nTenor | Christopher Watson (guest artist)\nBass | Nicholas Dinopoulos\nPiano | Andrea Katz \nPolyphonic Voices\nArtistic Director | Michael Fulcher \nHarmonium | Donald Nicolson \n\nSaturday 12 October 2024 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM (UTC+11)\n\nTrinity College Chapel\, University of Melbourne; 100 Royal Parade\, Parkville VIC 3052 \nTICKETS: $20 – $50

SUMMARY:Salut\, Paris!
DESCRIPTION:Polyphonic Voices’ second concert program of 2017 is an exploration of rarely-performed secular and sacred French music from the past 120 years\, featuring works by Yves Castagnet\, Francis Poulenc\, Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. \nDebussy and Ravel were both prolific composers of orchestral\, instrumental and solo vocal music but wrote surprisingly little for unaccompanied choir. In fact\, Debussy’s Trois Chansons de Charles d’Orléans and Ravel’s Trois Chansons are the composers’ only examples of completed and published works in this genre. Francis Poulenc’s output was much more comprehensive but his Chansons Françaises are rarely performed. This collection of eight songs\, based on pop music tunes of the day\, are direct and evocative expressions of bucolic pleasures and pains\, but are certainly no less worthy of performance than the composer’s better-known collections of choral music. \nYves Castagnet has been organist at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris since 1988 and is also an acclaimed composer. His Messe Salve Regina for two organs and choir was written 15 years ago and is a tremendous example of modern French composition. \nThomas Gaynor\, exciting young New York-based organist and winner of numerous international organ competitions\, will join Polyphonic Voices for this performance in Carlton’s resonant Sacred Heart Church. \nTickets: Adult $30 | Student $20 \n  \nAbout Polyphonic Voices\nPolyphonic Voices is a Melbourne-based chamber choir formed in 2013\, and since its inception has become renowned for its polished\, innovative and engaging performances in non-traditional concert venues\, often combined with multi-media elements. The choir prides itself on presenting a wide variety of music – both accompanied and unaccompanied – from the classical choral tradition\, but also arrangements of music from jazz\, pop\, folk and other alternative genres. \nPolyphonic Voices’ collaborations have included the Hilltop Hoods\, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra\, Indian film composer AR Rahman\, the Adelaide Chamber Singers\, and various local ensembles\, freelance musicians and visual artists.

SUMMARY:Motets at Montsalvat
DESCRIPTION:In its first program of 2017\, Polyphonic Voices continues to explore the vast repertoire of choral motets with well-known (and not so well-known) selections from throughout the history of Western Art Music. The unique program juxtaposes different settings of the same pieces of text: Eric Whitacre’s and Thomas Tomkins’ settings of “When David Heard”\, Olivier Messiaen’s and Tomás Luis de Victoria’s “O Sacrum Convivium”\, Samuel Scheidt’s and Tarik O’Regan’s “Surrexit Christus”\, Orlando di Lasso’s and Francis Poulenc’s “Videntes stellam Magi”\, and Tomás Luis de Victoria’s and Andrew Baldwin’s “O vos omnes”. Of course\, an exploration of motets wouldn’t be complete without some Johann Sebastian Bach\, and the choir will be only too happy to oblige with “Fürchte dich nicht” and “Komm\, Jesu\, Komm”. \nPolyphonic Voices is delighted to return to Sacred Heart Cathedral in Bendigo for the first concert of this program on Saturday the 20th May\, and on the following Sunday 28th May will perform again at Australia’s oldest artists’ community\, Montsalvat. Founded in 1934\, Montsalvat is a collection of gorgeous old buildings situated on picturesque grounds in Eltham\, northeast of Melbourne\, and is home to various painters\, sculptors\, woodworkers\, luthiers\, and musicians.

SUMMARY:Motets at Montsalvat | Bendigo Performance
