Whether interpreted as a public statement or subtle rebellion\, the symphony captures the turbulence\, despair\, and triumph of its time with volcanic intensity. \nKorngold\, a celebrated Jewish émigré\, found safety and success in Hollywood\, where his music embodied the emotional exuberance of early cinema. Gifted with sparkling melodies\, lush harmonies\, and imaginative orchestration\, Korngold brought a joyous spirit to his compositions. His Violin Concerto\, featuring brilliant violinist Louise Turnbull\, remains a beloved masterpiece. \nMelbourne composer Miriama Young’s Daughters of Elysium also draws from the past\, weaving Bach’s influences into her imaginative soundscape. DESCRIPTION:Three great composers span the turbulent 20th Century with sumptuous\, saxophone-infused\, musical energy.\nRhapsody in Blue was something entirely new – neither jazz nor symphony\, neither improvisation nor concerto – and with it\, composer George Gershwin opened the door on a stylistic collaboration which continues to this day\, almost 100 years later. Coming after the brooding power of Bernstein’s On the Waterfront\, Rhapsody will take us back to the escapist days of post WWI America. \nSymphonic Dances by the arch Romantic\, Rachmaninoff\, then jumps forward to pre-WW2 New York in music featuring the most American of musical sonorities\, and highly unusual in an orchestral setting\, the saxophone. Drawing the season to a close is The Chairman Dances\, John Adams’ rapturous foxtrot and one of 20th centuries’ most popular compositions.
