I heartily agree.” Ravel elegantly contrasts vibrant jazz-influenced passages with a sparse and heartfelt second movement. \nSibelius revised his Fifth Symphony twice after its 1915 premiere\, at a concert celebrating his fiftieth birthday. The final edit condensed the original first two movements into one. DESCRIPTION:The prose of Lord Byron provides the artistic inspiration behind two large-scale symphonic poems by Berlioz and Tchaikovsky. MSO Principal Viola Christopher Moore assumes the instrumental role of Harold\, a character who wanders through a tableau of Berlioz’s creation. \n\n\n\n\nAfter the success of his startling Symphonie Fantastique\, Berlioz was approached by the virtuoso violinist Paganini. Having recently acquired a Stradivarius viola\, Paganini was looking for repertoire for the instrument. Harold in Italy was the result – a symphonic poem inspired by Lord Byron’s and Berlioz’s own travels in Italy. \nFifty years later\, a composer suggested to Tchaikovsky that he write a symphonic work based on another of Byron’s poems\, Manfred. DESCRIPTION:Wicked magicians\, unrequited love\, and human sacrifice for a bountiful spring – these ballets have it all! \n\n\n\n\nThe MSO travels through the music for three of Igor Stravinsky’s wildly successful collaborations with the bohemian Ballet Russes company. \nLed by impresario Serge Diaghilev\, the Ballet Russes were known for colourful artistic collaborations uniting the mediums of set\, costume\, movement and music. The Firebird was Stravinsky’s first commission with the company\, based on a Russian fairy tale. \nIn the early stages of writing Petrushka\, Stravinsky had a vision of a ‘puppet\, suddenly endowed with life\, exasperating the patience of the orchestra with diabolical cascades of arpeggi.’ The vivid and intricate score follows the story of the sad clown puppet Petrushka\, who comes to life and tries to win the affections of a ballerina puppet. \nThe Rite of Spring had a rocky premiere: the angular choreography and muffled acoustic of the theatre famously sparked a riot in the audience. However\, subsequent performances cemented Stravinsky’s legendary status. DESCRIPTION:Rising star Sheku Kanneh-Mason\, the first cellist in history to reach the top 10 of the UK album charts\, joins the MSO for Shostakovich’s dark and stormy Second Cello Concerto. \n\n\n\n\nAnne Boyd is an eminent composer and academic whose research focuses on the influence of Asian music and culture on Australian composers. At the Rising of the Sun features bright sonorities and delicately layered textures of wind instruments. \nShostakovich’s Second Cello Concerto debuted at a gala concert celebrating the composer’s sixtieth birthday. Written for long-time friend and collaborator Mstislav Rostropovich\, the piece is an atmospheric and moody departure from his first cello concerto. Shostakovich reflected that it could be dubbed his “Fourteenth Symphony with a solo cello part.” \nDvořák wrote his Ninth Symphony as a fresh arrival in New York\, having just started as Director of the newly-formed National Conservatory of Music. DESCRIPTION:The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus returns to the stage with Rossini’s essential masterpiece.\nAbout the concert\nThe Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus returns to the stage with Rossini’s essential masterpiece\, Petite messe solennelle. Warren Trevelyan-Jones directs four stunning soloists\, accompanied by Melbourne-based Jacob Abela on piano and harmonium. \nThe Petite messe solennelle (1863) is arguably one of the most remarkable of all the nineteenth-century choral masterworks. The style that Rossini uses in his twilight years (this being one of the last works he wrote before his death in 1868) is comparable to the choral music of Haydn\, Fauré and Poulenc. \nThe beautiful melodies in this work are intertwined with the comedic sense of irony that gave Rossini so much of his success with the opera buffa genre. This piece is neither small\, nor solemn! \nRossini structured his mass in the tradition of the missa solemnis but added the petite label as a little joke. He wrote on the final page of the manuscript: ‘Dear Lord\, here it is finished\, this poor little mass. Have I just written sacred music\, or rather\, sacrilegious music? I was born for opera buffa\, as you know well. DESCRIPTION:Be swept away in a night of musical magic when the MSO presents one of Disney’s most extraordinary and groundbreaking animated features\, Fantasia\, in concert live to film. \nReleased to great acclaim in 1940\, Walt Disney’s Fantasia was his boldest experiment at the time and culminated in the creative visionary’s desire to blend animated imagery with classical music. \nConducted by Benjamin Northey\, the MSO will perform the beautifully curated emotional score of classical music including Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Suite\, Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony\, Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice\, Bach’s Toccata and Fugue\, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring\, and the fantastically dark scene with Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain. \nThe original film score was conducted by Leopold Stokowski with the Philadelphia Orchestra\, recorded in stereophonic sound\, which was still an experimental medium at the time. Fitting\, then\, that she should uncover three Legendary Women in this haunting piece of swirling harmonies and quiet strength.\nKodály is perhaps best remembered for inventing the Kodály method – a system known by primary school students and Sound of Music lovers all over the world – where notes of the scale are associated with hand signals (do\, re\, me etc.). Kodály’s other major contribution to music was his celebration of Hungarian folk melodies on the orchestral stage\, such as these beguiling and memorable dances from Galánta\, a town on the train line from Budapest to Vienna.\nBritish Anna Clyne is a young Grammy-nominated acoustic and electro-acoustic composer. Inspired by a poem by Rumi\, Clyne’s impressive concerto is performed by MSO Associate Principal Cello Rachael Tobin. Dedicated to her father\, DANCE spins us through many moods of dance: from contemplative minimalism with soaring melodies\, to lashings of industrial rhythmic urgency.\nWith boisterous percussion and jovial brass\, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol showcases the virtuosity of individual instruments in the orchestra through a vivid amalgamation of Spanish dances and Russian gypsy music.

In his first year in the position\, Haydn wrote Symphony No.6 Le Matin (the morning). This sprightly work is sprinkled with instrumental solos\, which will showcase the talented members of the MSO. \nMSO First Nations Creative Chair Deborah Cheetham AO will collaborate with William Barton for the first time to create a new work for orchestra and didgeridoo. In Cheetham’s words\, her new role will help the MSO explore their “identity and how deeply they can connect to Indigenous knowledges and ways of being”. \nGustav Mahler described the first movement of his First Symphony as the “awakening of nature from a long winter sleep”. This lyrical symphony continues on with a multitude of inspirations: Mahler drew on everything from past romantic entanglements\, a nineteenth century woodcut print\, a funeral march\, and a nursery rhyme!
