SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Opening Gala - Zenith of Life
DESCRIPTION:The Ryman Healthcare Season Opening Gala: Zenith of Life\nMSO Chief Conductor Jaime Martín and superstar soprano Siobhan Stagg open Season 2023 with a new commission by MSO Composer in Residence Mary Finsterer and some of the most achingly beautiful music ever written. \n\n\n\n\nInspired by the renaissance-style motet\, Mary Finsterer’s MYSTERIUM I explores an interweaving of polyphonic musical structures within a serene and majestic setting. \n\n\nPosthumously titled Four Last Songs after his death in 1948\, Strauss’s sublime pieces farewell a life and world once-known\, but irrevocably altered by two world wars. 2023 Soloist in Residence and darling of the international stage\, Mildura-born Siobhan Stagg\, imbues these complex works with nostalgia\, naïveté\, and gentle\, world-weary heartache. \nWritten almost fifty years before Strauss’s songs and before the shadow of war\, Mahler’s Fifth Symphony is a musical journey from tragedy to triumph: a story of life\, death\, and love. The lush lyricism of Mahler’s night-time storms\, exuberant brass calls\, and musical love letters draws us into a mysterious world beyond time and space. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday 24 Feb\, 7:30 PM; Saturday 25 Feb\, 2:00 PM  Running Time 2 hours (incl. interval)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $69.00 – $121.00; Concession $64.00 – $116.00*

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Sir Andrew's Messiah
DESCRIPTION:A festive favourite is reinvigorated by Sir Andrew Davis’ new orchestration\, in its second performance in Australia. \n\n\n\n\nSir Andrew Davis sang Handel’s Messiah as a boy soprano\, and his reorchestration is a labour of love. Davis describes his aim as to “clothe the work with all the colours available from a modern orchestra; as a result [he has] used such instruments as alto flute\, oboe d’amore\, harp and some percussion including marimba and even sleigh bells!” \nMessiah contains the famous “Hallelujah!” chorus which has been quoted in popular culture since its creation. A few years after its premiere in 1742\, Messiah became an Easter time fixture\, performed to raise funds for the Foundling Hospital in London. The oratorio has never fallen out of favour and is commonly performed around Christmas. \nRather than follow a specific biblical narrative\, the text of Messiah is taken from various passages in the Old and New Testament. The vibrant arias and recitatives bring colour and urgency to the subject matter\, with Handel utilising visceral word-painting throughout. \nArtists: Jacqueline Porter – Soprano; Catherine Carby – Alto; Andrew Goodwin – Tenor \n\n\n\n\nSaturday 10 Dec 7:00 PM; Sunday 11 Dec 5:00 PM; Hamer Hall\n\n\nRunning time: 2 hours 20 minutes \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $75.00 – $131.00; Concession* $70.00 – $126.00\n\n*Concession prices apply to Pensioners\, Full-time students\, Unemployed and Children under the age of 18

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra presents Mendelssohn and Brahms
DESCRIPTION:Sir Andrew Davis returns to lead the MSO for the first time as Chief Conductor Laureate. \n\n\n\n\nDavis will be joined by MSO Young Artist in Association Christian Li\, who will tackle Mendelssohn’s astonishing Violin Concerto. \nCarl Vine’s MicroSymphony kicks into gear with an explosive beginning and barely eases in energy for the remaining ten minutes. Mellifluous passages on flute provide contrast with thundering\, frenetic material developed from a four-note motif. \nTo describe Christian Li as a violin wunderkind would not be an understatement: at ten years old he became the youngest ever winner of the Junior 1st Prize in the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition. Li’s precision and musical sophistication beyond his years will be showcased in Mendelssohn’s virtuosic Violin Concerto. \nBrahms composed his Fourth Symphony during a summer retreat in the mountains south of Vienna. Music critic Eduard Hanslick gave it an insightful and glowing review\, citing Brahms’ “sovereign mastery of all the secrets of counterpoint\, harmony\, and instrumentation\, [and of] the logic of development combined with the most beautiful freedom of fantasy.” \n\n\n\n\nFriday 2 Dec 7:30 PM; Saturday 3 Dec 2:00 PM\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour 45 minutes (inc. 1 x 20 minute interval) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $69.00 – $129.00; Concession* $64.00 – $124.00

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra presents James Ehnes: Beethoven's Violin Concerto
DESCRIPTION:The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra takes the lead in a program of bold Hungarian repertoire\, followed by Beethoven’s Violin Concerto directed and performed by James Ehnes. \n\n\n\n\nGyörgy Ligeti arranged Six Bagatelles for wind quintet from a cycle of piano pieces he had written years previously\, Musica ricercata. Ten members of the MSO woodwind section will perform these vivacious and intricate vignettes to open the program. \nThen\, the strings of the MSO take to the stage for Bartók’s Divertimento. Heavily influenced by the rhythms and tonalities of Eastern European folk music\, Bartók composed the work in a Swiss Alps chalet owned by the commissioner of the work. \nBeethoven’s Violin Concerto was composed for prodigy Franz Clement. The concerto did not immediately catch on with audiences; it wasn’t until forty years later\, when thirteen-year-old Joseph Joachim performed the piece under the baton of Felix Mendelssohn\, that it entered the standard repertoire. \n\n\n\n\nThursday 17 Nov 7:30 PM; Saturday 19 Nov 7:30 PM; Arts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour 45 minutes (inc. 1 x 20 minute interval) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets: Thursday 17 November: Standard $75.00 – $146.00;  Concession*$70.00 – $141.00 \nSaturday 19 November: Standard $69.00 – $124.00; Concession* $64.00 – $119.00

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra presents Season Finale Gala: Boléro!
DESCRIPTION:Be transported to the landscape of Spain with vivacious and colourful works from Ravel\, Rodrigo and de Falla. \n\n\n\n\nMaurice Ravel had a lifelong affinity for Spanish culture and music; his mother hailed from Basque Country straddling the border of France and Spain. Rapsodie Espagnole was Ravel’s first composition for orchestra. A mysterious\, intoxicating four-note motif dominates the opening\, followed by two passages inspired by dance forms and a festive conclusion. \nClassical and folk traditions converge in Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez\, featuring “the soul of the Spanish guitar” Pablo Sáinz-Villegas. Proving that inspiration can strike anywhere\, the melody for the seductive second movement of this work came to Rodrigo whilst he was waiting for a tram! \nde Falla’s Three Cornered Hat began life as the accompanying music of a pantomime play. At the encouragement of Serge Diagilev of the Ballet Russes\, de Falla expanded the score into a full ballet. The two orchestral suites string together vignettes from the completed ballet in the original order. \nBoléro is one of the most famous pieces in the orchestral repertoire. Ravel gradually builds a crescendo over fifteen minutes\, floating winding melodies over a persistent snare drum. \n*Please note: de Falla’s El Amor Brujo will no longer be performed as part of this program. \n\n\n\n\nFriday 11 Nov 7:30 PM; Saturday 12 Nov 7:30 PM\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour 45 minutes (including interval) \n\n\n\n\n\nPrice range\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $75.00 – $131.00; Concession* $70.00 – $126.00\n\n*Concession prices apply to Pensioners\, Full-time students\, Unemployed and Children under the age of 18 \nDynamic pricing applies to this event. SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra presents Quick Fix at Half Six: Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Experience the power and grandeur of Ludwig van Beethoven at the height of his powers\, alongside the Australian premiere of a bold new work by Brett Dean – inspired by Beethoven’s own piano concertos. \n\n\n\n\nOver five years\, Biss co-commissioned five composers to produce their own piano concertos in response to Beethoven’s contributions to the genre. Brett Dean’s atmospheric Gneixendorf Music\, a Winter’s Journey was informed by a summer spent in the small Austrian village where Beethoven resided for a few months towards the end of his life. \nSymphony No.5 opens with the most famous ‘da da da duumm!’ in history. But there is more to this piece than its impactful beginning: Beethoven takes a number of simple themes and expertly weaves them into a layered musical texture\, all while building a sense of dramatic urgency. \n\n\n\n\nMonday 7 Nov\, 6:30 PM; Running Time1 hour\n\n\nPrice range\n\n\n\nStandard: $55.00 – $95.00;  Concession* $50.00 – $90.00\n\n*Concession prices apply to Pensioners\, Full-time students\, Unemployed and Children under the age of 18 \nDynamic pricing applies to this event. SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Verdi's Requiem
DESCRIPTION:The MSO is joined by four masterful soloists and the 120-strong MSO Chorus to bring a truly momentous work to life: Verdi’s Requiem. \n\n\n\n\nVerdi felt compelled to start a Requiem after the passing of fellow composer and cultural icon Gioachino Rossini. After a five-year delay\, Verdi returned to the project after the death of revered Italian author Alessandro Manzoni. A fervent admirer of Manzoni and his works\, Verdi dedicated his Requiem to the writer’s memory. \nAs you would expect from one of the greatest operatic composers of all time\, the Requiem packs a dramatic punch\, moving from thundering crescendos to moments of pious contemplation. Verdi wrote the piece with a concert hall setting in mind\, rather than the strictly observant surrounds of a church. \n\nArtists\n\n\n\n\nMelbourne Symphony Orchestra\n\n\n\nJaime Martín – Conductor\n\n\nMaija Kovalevska – Soprano\n\n\nCatherine Carby – Alto\n\n\nKang Wang – Tenor\n\n\nJonathan Lemalu – Bass\n\n\nMSO Chorus\nWarren Trevelyan-Jones – Chorus Master\n\n\nPerformance dates & times\n\n\n\nThursday 27 Oct 7:30 PM\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour 30 minutes

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Bruch Violin Concerto - Reflections
DESCRIPTION:Fabian Russell leads the MSO in a collection of virtuosic works inspired by nature and folk music from around the world. \n\n\n\n\nAustralian composer Harry Sdraulig’s evocatively titled works are often inspired by the beauty and power of nature. Here\, Torrent comes to life – from frenzied furiosity to thick stagnancy and back again – under the baton of much-loved Australian conductor Fabian Russell. \nMax Bruch’s First Violin Concerto is a bravura showpiece for violinists that has never waned in popularity with audiences. It is expertly handled here by fifteen-year old Edward Walton\, who recently won Junior 2nd Prize in the prestigious Menuhin Competition. \nBased on folk dances and ecclesiastical chants\, but with modern hints such as the inclusion of saxophone\, Symphonic Dances was the last work Rachmaninov ever composed. Virtuosic playing\, heaving energy\, and gentle\, lingering melodies make this unforgettable work an enduring favourite of audiences the world over. \nTickets\n\n\n\nStandard: $69.00 – $129.00\n\n\nConcession*: $64.00 – $124.00

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra presents Tchaikovsky's Pathétique
DESCRIPTION:The MSO uncovers the spaces between sonority and silence in this program\, directed by Alpesh Chauhan\, Associate Conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. \n\n\n\n\nAustralian composer Anna Cawrse describes The Rest is Silence as “a prayer\, a celebration\, and a meditation on the quiet still spaces\, the silence amidst the hustle\, and the enduring power of music”. This concerto features MSO Principal Cor Anglais Michael Pisani in an exploration of this remarkable instrument\, often used to express music’s most melancholic\, bittersweet\, and emotionally profound moments. \nTchaikovsky wrote that his Sixth Symphony was “the best thing I ever composed or shall compose” – a big claim from the man who wrote Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. This remarkable symphony is infinitely relatable\, exploring a struggle between the strength of life force\, and emotional and physical demise. In a break from standard practice of the time\, this incredible cornerstone of romantic repertoire ends in quiet\, contemplative dissolution

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Sibelius and Ravel
DESCRIPTION:The MSO is joined by internationally in-demand pianist Yeol Eum Son for a program featuring masterpieces from the early 20th century and an Australian premiere. \n\n\n\n\nThomas Adès’ Exterminating Angel Symphony brings together excerpts from his 2016 opera of the same name\, based on the 1962 film by surrealist filmmaker Luis Buñuel. Adès utilises the eerie voice of an ondes Martenot\, one of the earliest electronic instruments\, invented in 1928. \nRavel knew what he wanted to avoid in his Piano Concerto in G: drama for drama’s sake. “It has been said of certain classics that their concertos were written not ‘for’ but ‘against’ the piano. I heartily agree.” Ravel elegantly contrasts vibrant jazz-influenced passages with a sparse and heartfelt second movement. \nSibelius revised his Fifth Symphony twice after its 1915 premiere\, at a concert celebrating his fiftieth birthday. The final edit condensed the original first two movements into one. The finale features the achingly beautiful ‘swan hymn’ featuring striking intervals in the horns. \n\n\n\n\nThursday 25 Aug\, 7:30 PM;  Saturday 27 Aug\, 2:00 PM –  Hamer Hall\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour 40 minutes (inc. 1 x 20 minute interval) \n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\nThursday 25 August – Standard: $75.00 – $146.00; Concession*: $70.00 – $141.00 \nSaturday 27 August – Standard $69.00 – $129.00; Concession*: $64.00 – $124.00

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Poetry in Music - Berlioz and Tchaikovsky
DESCRIPTION:The prose of Lord Byron provides the artistic inspiration behind two large-scale symphonic poems by Berlioz and Tchaikovsky. MSO Principal Viola Christopher Moore assumes the instrumental role of Harold\, a character who wanders through a tableau of Berlioz’s creation. \n\n\n\n\nAfter the success of his startling Symphonie Fantastique\, Berlioz was approached by the virtuoso violinist Paganini. Having recently acquired a Stradivarius viola\, Paganini was looking for repertoire for the instrument. Harold in Italy was the result – a symphonic poem inspired by Lord Byron’s and Berlioz’s own travels in Italy. \nFifty years later\, a composer suggested to Tchaikovsky that he write a symphonic work based on another of Byron’s poems\, Manfred. Tchaikovsky became absorbed in the work during a trip to the Swiss Alps\, dividing the work into four scenes with rich orchestral colour and dramatic nuance. \n  \nPrice range: Standard $69.00 – $119.00; Concession* $64.00 – $114.00

SUMMARY:Stravinsky's Ballets
DESCRIPTION:Wicked magicians\, unrequited love\, and human sacrifice for a bountiful spring – these ballets have it all! \n\n\n\n\nThe MSO travels through the music for three of Igor Stravinsky’s wildly successful collaborations with the bohemian Ballet Russes company. \nLed by impresario Serge Diaghilev\, the Ballet Russes were known for colourful artistic collaborations uniting the mediums of set\, costume\, movement and music. The Firebird was Stravinsky’s first commission with the company\, based on a Russian fairy tale. \nIn the early stages of writing Petrushka\, Stravinsky had a vision of a ‘puppet\, suddenly endowed with life\, exasperating the patience of the orchestra with diabolical cascades of arpeggi.’ The vivid and intricate score follows the story of the sad clown puppet Petrushka\, who comes to life and tries to win the affections of a ballerina puppet. \nThe Rite of Spring had a rocky premiere: the angular choreography and muffled acoustic of the theatre famously sparked a riot in the audience. However\, subsequent performances cemented Stravinsky’s legendary status. The composer used the ballet as an opportunity to push his bold musical ideas even further – it is filled with exciting layered rhythms\, rapidly shifting tempos\, and discordant harmonies. \nPrice range\n\n\n\nStandard\n$69.00 – $119.00\n\n\nConcession*\n$64.00 – $114.00

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Sheku Kanneh-Mason
DESCRIPTION:Rising star Sheku Kanneh-Mason\, the first cellist in history to reach the top 10 of the UK album charts\, joins the MSO for Shostakovich’s dark and stormy Second Cello Concerto. \n\n\n\n\nAnne Boyd is an eminent composer and academic whose research focuses on the influence of Asian music and culture on Australian composers. At the Rising of the Sun features bright sonorities and delicately layered textures of wind instruments. \nShostakovich’s Second Cello Concerto debuted at a gala concert celebrating the composer’s sixtieth birthday. Written for long-time friend and collaborator Mstislav Rostropovich\, the piece is an atmospheric and moody departure from his first cello concerto. Shostakovich reflected that it could be dubbed his “Fourteenth Symphony with a solo cello part.” \nDvořák wrote his Ninth Symphony as a fresh arrival in New York\, having just started as Director of the newly-formed National Conservatory of Music. Inspired by the soul of African American spirituals\, Dvořák aimed to embody its character in orchestral form. \n\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall; Saturday 30 Jul 7:30 PM\n\nRunning Time1 hour 50 minutes (inc. 1 x 20 minute interval) \nPrice range\n\n\n\nStandard $75.00 – $146.00\n\n\nConcession* $70.00 – $131.00
