SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique
DESCRIPTION:Dreams and nightmares collide in this truly epic concert of escapist fantasy. Under the baton of Jaime Martín\, the MSO is joined by the monumental forces of the MSO Chorus and 2023 Ensemble in Residence Gondwana Voices. \n\n\n\n\nDaughter of a Russian princess\, Lili Boulanger grew up in a claustrophobic world of expectation with music serving as her great escape. Psalm 129 begins with the text ‘they have oppressed me since my youth’ – a statement with great autobiographical resonances for this extraordinary composer. \nAustralian Brett Dean’s ‘social cantata’ Vexations and Devotions has been described as reflecting the ‘de-humanisation of contemporary life as exemplified by reality television\, automated answering services and meaningless corporate jargon’ (The Australian). With text by Michael Leunig and Dorothy Porter\, this performance of Dean’s playful and philosophical work features youth choir Gondwana Voices\, MSO 2023 Ensemble in Residence. \nFrench composer Berlioz’s epic Symphonie Fantastique is a prime example of programmatic music – that is\, music with a clear story that the music seeks to evoke. It follows the protagonist’s melodious\, energetically-heaving\, and sometimes horrifying fever dream of love\, death\, and the supernatural. \n\n\n\n\nFriday 14 Jul\, 7:30 PM;  Saturday 15 Jul\, 7:30 PM    Running Time 2 hours 10 minutes\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $69.00 – $121.00\, Concession $64.00 – $116.00*

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: The Ryman Healthcare Winter Gala: Ray Chen performs Tchaikovsky
DESCRIPTION:Let the MSO take your breath away with some of the most lush\, emotive\, and romantic music ever written. \n\n\n\n\nInspired by the sensual folk music and dances of his native Transylvania\, Ligeti went out with early recording equipment to ‘collect’ folk tunes from people living in the regions of Romania. His 1951 Concerto Românesc is a manifestation of Ligeti’s deep love of Romanian culture and music\, with a distinctly modern edginess for which his music is known. \nAdored the world over for his prodigious musical ability and cheeky charisma\, celebrated violinist Ray Chen performs one of the most beautiful\, expressive\, and virtuosic pieces in the violin repertoire – Tchaikovsky’s Concerto for violin and orchestra. \nA masterclass in unbridled melodic passion\, Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony is a stunning display of orchestral emotion – ranging from aching tenderness to turbulent intensity – using the full palette of orchestral colours. \n\n\n\nThursday 29 June 7:30 PM; Saturday 1 July 2:00 PM     Running Time 2 hours 30 minutes\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Thursday 29 June: Standard $83.00 – $151.00; Concession* $78.00 – $146.00\n\n\n\nSaturday 1 July: Standard $79.00 – $137.00; Concession* $74.00 – $132.00

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Northern Reflections: Sibelius and Shostakovich
DESCRIPTION:MSO Young Artist in Association Christian Li joins the MSO and Queensland Symphony Orchestra Chief Conductor Umberto Clerici for a concert of thrilling works from north of the equator. \nFeaturing Sibelius and Shostakovich – plus Rossini’s galloping overture from William Tell. Instantly recognisable and heavily quoted in pop culture\, the overture to Rossini’s 1829 opera William Tell was lauded by critics at the time as a symphony in and of itself with a poetic opening\, a storm\, pastoral scene\, and its famous galloping finale.\nShostakovich’s relationship with the Soviet Russian state had been tumultuous for many years by the time he began his sixth symphony. He had announced an epic musical monument to Lenin with chorus and soloists\, and leaning heavily on Russian folk music. When it premiered in 1939\, however\, the work turned out to contain none of these things – restrained and dark instead of bombastic and patriotic\, with no references to Lenin – throwing him into political disfavour. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 20 April\, 7:30 PM; Saturday 22 April\, 2:00 PM Running Time1 hours 50 minutes\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Thursday 20 April: Standard: $75.00 – $135.00; Concession: $70.00 – $130.00* Group Standard 10+: $75.00 – $117.00; Group Concession 10+: $70.00 – $112.00* \nSaturday 22 April: Standard: $69.00 – $121.00; Concession: $64.00 – $116.00* \n\nGroup Standard 10+: $69.00 – $107.00; Group Concession 10+: $64.00 – $102.00*

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Brahms’ Violin Concerto and more
DESCRIPTION:What do a bugle\, a bell tower\, and a child prodigy violinist have in common? Find out as the MSO explores a series of star-crossed summons and signals under the baton of Swiss-Australian conductor Elena Schwarz – formerly a prestigious Dudamel Fellow at the LA Philharmonic. \n\n\n\n\nAustralian composer Natalie Williams’ music has been performed by the likes of the MSO\, Atlanta Opera\, Berkeley Symphony\, and Musica Viva. Fourth Alarm (2013) expands a short Australian Army bugle call into a vivid work for orchestra – at once an expressive call to arms and a pressing\, rhythmic warning of danger. \nDestined for a musical life after being born in a Bohemian bell tower\, Martinů’s magical First Symphony traverses passages of bombastic character and mysterious quietness building to an explosion of orchestral colour. \nThe enduring success of Brahms’s knockout Violin Concerto was in no small way influenced by a fated musical encounter with violinist Joseph Joachim when Brahms was only fourteen. Years later\, they became friends\, and this concerto was written especially for Joachim\, who had a significant hand in its composition. International powerhouse violinist Clara-Jumi Kang puts her distinctive musical stamp on this astonishing work. \n11 March 2023; 7.30pm | Hamer Hall; TICKETS: $69 – $121

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Strauss' Alpine Symphony\, Debussy and Sutherland
DESCRIPTION:o \nTravel with the MSO without leaving your seat in this odyssey through the German Alps\, Parisian streetscapes and Dandenong Ranges\, all under the baton of Jaime Martín. \n\n\n\n\nOne of Australia’s most rebellious composers\, Margaret Sutherland was ahead of her time and excelled in a male-dominated field at home and abroad. Her powerful work Haunted Hills is both a lush picture of the Dandenong Ranges and a reflection on the horrific mistreatment of the area’s traditional owners – the Bunurong and Woiworung people of the Kulin Nation – upon colonisation. \nThe impressionistic Ariettes Oubliées or Forgotten Songs are the musical equivalent of a Renoir or a Monet – inspired by subtlety and nuance\, and capturing snapshots in music through shifting harmony\, tone\, and musical colour. Musically eclectic yet recognisably ‘French’\, these songs demonstrate Debussy’s part in the development of an iconic French musical style\, recognisable today in the likes of Amélie’s Yann Tiersen. Hear Siobhan Stagg’s glorious interpretation. \nStrauss’s Alpine Symphony is often described as a ‘tone poem’ – a musical illustration of a story\, novel\, painting\, landscape\, or other non-musical source. Strauss loved rambling through the alps\, and this glorious work takes us on a musical hike over the course of a single day from sunrise to sunset. Sometimes easy with breath-taking views and glorious sunshine\, and sometimes difficult with dangerous terrain and weather\, it’s possibly the most spectacular (and easiest) way to get your step count up. \n\n\n\n\nThursday 2 Mar 7:30 PM; Friday 3 Mar 7:30 PM Running Time2 hours\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets: Thursday 2 March Standard: $75.00 – $135.00; Concession: $70.00 – $130.00*\n\n\n\nFriday 3 March Standard: $69.00 – $121.00; Concession: $64.00 – $116.00* \n*Concession prices apply to Pensioners\, Full-time students\, Unemployed and Children under the age of 18

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Opening Gala - Zenith of Life
DESCRIPTION:The Ryman Healthcare Season Opening Gala: Zenith of Life\nMSO Chief Conductor Jaime Martín and superstar soprano Siobhan Stagg open Season 2023 with a new commission by MSO Composer in Residence Mary Finsterer and some of the most achingly beautiful music ever written. \n\n\n\n\nInspired by the renaissance-style motet\, Mary Finsterer’s MYSTERIUM I explores an interweaving of polyphonic musical structures within a serene and majestic setting. \n\n\nPosthumously titled Four Last Songs after his death in 1948\, Strauss’s sublime pieces farewell a life and world once-known\, but irrevocably altered by two world wars. 2023 Soloist in Residence and darling of the international stage\, Mildura-born Siobhan Stagg\, imbues these complex works with nostalgia\, naïveté\, and gentle\, world-weary heartache. \nWritten almost fifty years before Strauss’s songs and before the shadow of war\, Mahler’s Fifth Symphony is a musical journey from tragedy to triumph: a story of life\, death\, and love. The lush lyricism of Mahler’s night-time storms\, exuberant brass calls\, and musical love letters draws us into a mysterious world beyond time and space. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday 24 Feb\, 7:30 PM; Saturday 25 Feb\, 2:00 PM  Running Time 2 hours (incl. interval)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $69.00 – $121.00; Concession $64.00 – $116.00*

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Sir Andrew's Messiah
DESCRIPTION:A festive favourite is reinvigorated by Sir Andrew Davis’ new orchestration\, in its second performance in Australia. \n\n\n\n\nSir Andrew Davis sang Handel’s Messiah as a boy soprano\, and his reorchestration is a labour of love. Davis describes his aim as to “clothe the work with all the colours available from a modern orchestra; as a result [he has] used such instruments as alto flute\, oboe d’amore\, harp and some percussion including marimba and even sleigh bells!” \nMessiah contains the famous “Hallelujah!” chorus which has been quoted in popular culture since its creation. A few years after its premiere in 1742\, Messiah became an Easter time fixture\, performed to raise funds for the Foundling Hospital in London. The oratorio has never fallen out of favour and is commonly performed around Christmas. \nRather than follow a specific biblical narrative\, the text of Messiah is taken from various passages in the Old and New Testament. The vibrant arias and recitatives bring colour and urgency to the subject matter\, with Handel utilising visceral word-painting throughout. \nArtists: Jacqueline Porter – Soprano; Catherine Carby – Alto; Andrew Goodwin – Tenor \n\n\n\n\nSaturday 10 Dec 7:00 PM; Sunday 11 Dec 5:00 PM; Hamer Hall\n\n\nRunning time: 2 hours 20 minutes \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $75.00 – $131.00; Concession* $70.00 – $126.00\n\n*Concession prices apply to Pensioners\, Full-time students\, Unemployed and Children under the age of 18

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra presents Mendelssohn and Brahms
DESCRIPTION:Sir Andrew Davis returns to lead the MSO for the first time as Chief Conductor Laureate. \n\n\n\n\nDavis will be joined by MSO Young Artist in Association Christian Li\, who will tackle Mendelssohn’s astonishing Violin Concerto. \nCarl Vine’s MicroSymphony kicks into gear with an explosive beginning and barely eases in energy for the remaining ten minutes. Mellifluous passages on flute provide contrast with thundering\, frenetic material developed from a four-note motif. \nTo describe Christian Li as a violin wunderkind would not be an understatement: at ten years old he became the youngest ever winner of the Junior 1st Prize in the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition. Li’s precision and musical sophistication beyond his years will be showcased in Mendelssohn’s virtuosic Violin Concerto. \nBrahms composed his Fourth Symphony during a summer retreat in the mountains south of Vienna. Music critic Eduard Hanslick gave it an insightful and glowing review\, citing Brahms’ “sovereign mastery of all the secrets of counterpoint\, harmony\, and instrumentation\, [and of] the logic of development combined with the most beautiful freedom of fantasy.” \n\n\n\n\nFriday 2 Dec 7:30 PM; Saturday 3 Dec 2:00 PM\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour 45 minutes (inc. 1 x 20 minute interval) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $69.00 – $129.00; Concession* $64.00 – $124.00

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra presents James Ehnes: Beethoven's Violin Concerto
DESCRIPTION:The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra takes the lead in a program of bold Hungarian repertoire\, followed by Beethoven’s Violin Concerto directed and performed by James Ehnes. \n\n\n\n\nGyörgy Ligeti arranged Six Bagatelles for wind quintet from a cycle of piano pieces he had written years previously\, Musica ricercata. Ten members of the MSO woodwind section will perform these vivacious and intricate vignettes to open the program. \nThen\, the strings of the MSO take to the stage for Bartók’s Divertimento. Heavily influenced by the rhythms and tonalities of Eastern European folk music\, Bartók composed the work in a Swiss Alps chalet owned by the commissioner of the work. \nBeethoven’s Violin Concerto was composed for prodigy Franz Clement. The concerto did not immediately catch on with audiences; it wasn’t until forty years later\, when thirteen-year-old Joseph Joachim performed the piece under the baton of Felix Mendelssohn\, that it entered the standard repertoire. \n\n\n\n\nThursday 17 Nov 7:30 PM; Saturday 19 Nov 7:30 PM; Arts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour 45 minutes (inc. 1 x 20 minute interval) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets: Thursday 17 November: Standard $75.00 – $146.00;  Concession*$70.00 – $141.00 \nSaturday 19 November: Standard $69.00 – $124.00; Concession* $64.00 – $119.00

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra presents Season Finale Gala: Boléro!
DESCRIPTION:Be transported to the landscape of Spain with vivacious and colourful works from Ravel\, Rodrigo and de Falla. \n\n\n\n\nMaurice Ravel had a lifelong affinity for Spanish culture and music; his mother hailed from Basque Country straddling the border of France and Spain. Rapsodie Espagnole was Ravel’s first composition for orchestra. A mysterious\, intoxicating four-note motif dominates the opening\, followed by two passages inspired by dance forms and a festive conclusion. \nClassical and folk traditions converge in Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez\, featuring “the soul of the Spanish guitar” Pablo Sáinz-Villegas. Proving that inspiration can strike anywhere\, the melody for the seductive second movement of this work came to Rodrigo whilst he was waiting for a tram! \nde Falla’s Three Cornered Hat began life as the accompanying music of a pantomime play.
At the encouragement of Serge Diagilev of the Ballet Russes\, de Falla expanded the score into a full ballet. SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra presents Quick Fix at Half Six: Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Experience the power and grandeur of Ludwig van Beethoven at the height of his powers\, alongside the Australian premiere of a bold new work by Brett Dean – inspired by Beethoven’s own piano concertos. \n\n\n\n\nOver five years\, Biss co-commissioned five composers to produce their own piano concertos in response to Beethoven’s contributions to the genre. Brett Dean’s atmospheric Gneixendorf Music\, a Winter’s Journey was informed by a summer spent in the small Austrian village where Beethoven resided for a few months towards the end of his life. \nSymphony No.5 opens with the most famous ‘da da da duumm!’ in history. But there is more to this piece than its impactful beginning: Beethoven takes a number of simple themes and expertly weaves them into a layered musical texture\, all while building a sense of dramatic urgency. \n\n\n\n\nMonday 7 Nov\, 6:30 PM; Running Time1 hour\n\n\nPrice range\n\n\n\nStandard: $55.00 – $95.00;  Concession* $50.00 – $90.00\n\n*Concession prices apply to Pensioners\, Full-time students\, Unemployed and Children under the age of 18 \nDynamic pricing applies to this event. SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Verdi's Requiem
DESCRIPTION:The MSO is joined by four masterful soloists and the 120-strong MSO Chorus to bring a truly momentous work to life: Verdi’s Requiem. \n\n\n\n\nVerdi felt compelled to start a Requiem after the passing of fellow composer and cultural icon Gioachino Rossini. After a five-year delay\, Verdi returned to the project after the death of revered Italian author Alessandro Manzoni. A fervent admirer of Manzoni and his works\, Verdi dedicated his Requiem to the writer’s memory. \nAs you would expect from one of the greatest operatic composers of all time\, the Requiem packs a dramatic punch\, moving from thundering crescendos to moments of pious contemplation. Verdi wrote the piece with a concert hall setting in mind\, rather than the strictly observant surrounds of a church. \n\nArtists\n\n\n\n\nMelbourne Symphony Orchestra\n\n\n\nJaime Martín – Conductor\n\n\nMaija Kovalevska – Soprano\n\n\nCatherine Carby – Alto\n\n\nKang Wang – Tenor\n\n\nJonathan Lemalu – Bass\n\n\nMSO Chorus\nWarren Trevelyan-Jones – Chorus Master\n\n\nPerformance dates & times\n\n\n\nThursday 27 Oct 7:30 PM\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour 30 minutes
