SUMMARY:Contrasting works by Jenkins and Puccini
DESCRIPTION:Heidelberg Choral Society and Orchestra are proud to present the Australian Premiere performance of Karl Jenkins’ major new work\, Symphonic Adiemus. This iconic work for choir and unusual percussions will be contrasted with the popular Messa di Gloria of Giacomo Puccini. \nSince it was first heard in 1994\, Karl Jenkins’s work has captured the imaginations of music-lovers worldwide thanks to its unique combination of classical principles with the flavors of the world and ethnic music. The first release in the series\, Adiemus: Songs of Sanctuary\, has sold over 1.5 million albums worldwide \nSymphonic Adiemus\, which received its first UK performance in London in late 2017\, is a challenging and innovative work\, drawing on and extending earlier works. Through his use of invented language\, unusual rhythms and extensive and rarely-heard percussion Jenkins pushes the boundaries of new music development. \nUnashamedly operatic\, the young Puccini’s Messa di Gloria reflects the influence of Puccini’s hero\, Verdi\, and provides a foretaste of his later major works. The joyous themes which run throughout the work complement the exuberant nature of Jenkin’s work\, and provide an orchestral contrast which will make this a concert not to be missed. \nSoloists Nathan Lay (baritone) and Timothy Reynold (tenor) also feature in the program. \n

SUMMARY:Big bread\, big boots – Music of the Hungarian plains
DESCRIPTION:Vardos have been serenading audiences around the world since late last century\, driven by wild violin\, accordion and double bass\, their gypsy-folk and Romany styled song is a rare treat in contemporary concert halls. Their travels have taken them throughout a swathe of Australian music festivals and internationally through New Zealand\, New Caledonia\, Switzerland\, Hungary and the United States. \nTwo-metre high loaves of bread and laments of boots without boot stiffener\, sorrow over homelands and missing lovers: the Hungarians use to music to express all the highs and lows of life. Haunting laments\, pentatonic peasant songs and virtuosic and crazily fast dance pieces capture the essence of Hungary.

SUMMARY:RESONANCES: Music from Japan
DESCRIPTION:Pianists Tomoe Kawabata and Aura Go share an electric musical connection that speaks directly to audiences. Described as ‘positively ecstatic’\, ‘masterful’ and ‘profoundly moving’\, the pair delights in sharing the unique combination of intimacy and dynamism of the piano duo. Their innovative and thoughtful programming explores seldom-performed works and new music alongside much-loved staples of the repertoire. Their 2017 Melbourne Recital Centre series celebrates three favourite aspects of the genre in three distinct and compelling programs: unique resonances\, evocative and colourful sonic landscapes\, and infectious energy. \nResonances: Music from Japan is a rare opportunity to hear spellbinding works for one and two pianos by several of Japan’s foremost composers. This concert reveals the unique resonances created by blending two pianos into one sonic entity\, while also tracing the lineage of Japan’s French school of composition\, fathered by Tomojiro Ikenouchi and pushed into bold new directions by his students Akira Miyoshi\, Akio Yashiro and Shin-ichiro Ikebe. Several of the works on the program were recorded for the first time by the Kawabata-Go Piano Duo on their CD\, Five Rocks in a Japanese Garden\, and receive their first Australian performance in this concert. \nPROGRAM: \nTomojiro Ikenouchi\nEn Bis pour piano à 4 mains \nAkio Yashiro\nSonata for piano \nAkira Miyoshi\nPhénomène sonore I pour deux pianos \nPhénomène sonore II pour deux pianos \nHenri Dutilleux\nFigures de resonances\, for two pianos \nShin-ichiro Ikebe\nA couple of butterflies through…

SUMMARY:Wagner in Paris
DESCRIPTION:A little about the show… \nBased in fact but liberally sprinkled with supposition and rumour\, this captivating story of Wagner’s impoverished time in Paris with his first wife\, Minna\, is told through letters\, prose and song. Melbourne based ensemble\, The Parlour\, will take audiences on an entertaining and moving journey\, guided by the words of Minna Wagner’s illegitimate daughter\, Natalie Planer\, the most enduring but least written about woman in the life of Richard Wagner. \nNot merely a song recital\, Wagner is Paris is imagined as the first encounter between Natalie Planer and Wagner’s aspiring biographer\, Mrs. Burrell. It features a number of Wagner’s rarely heard French Art Songs along with those of his friends\, rivals and contemporaries. Soprano Wendy Grose performs Wagner’s epic Adieux de Marie Stuart which contrasts with his intimate Trois Melodies to be sung by mezzo soprano Karen Van Spall. Baritone Adam Miller performs a number of Wagner’s pieces for male voice all accompanied by pianist Eidit Golder. Natalie Planer’s narrative is brought to life by talented actors Julie Houghton\, Eva Torkkola and Alice Tovey. Through all this\, the audience gains an insight into this tempestuous\, but little spoken about period in the composer’s life.\nEvent Details:\nThursday 3rd November\, 6pm\nSalon\, Melbourne Recital Centre (Crn Southbank Blvd & Sturt St. Southbank)\nTickets – $39 / $29 Concession\nBookings – melbournerecital.com.au or 9699 3333 \nPresented by The Parlour and Melbourne Recital Centre
