SUMMARY:ELISION – The Aesthetics of Disappearance
DESCRIPTION:ELISION is an experimental classical music ensemble focused upon pushing sonic and instrumental boundaries in search of visceral expressive experiences.\nThe Aesthetics of Disappearance features the music of Cat Hope and Liza Lim in a ballet of twisting and turning sonic gestures written with Capoeira\, the Brazilian martial dance practice\, in mind; Luke Paulding’s Jupiter Dreaming (after interstellar space) and a premiere of Richard Barrett’s venus\, composed for the rare and stunning Scelsi-inspired combination of harp\, percussion and contrabass. Their performance in Primrose Potter Salon will explore their artisanal and intimately gestural approach to the production of music\, the co-creative processes of dialogue with composers\, and the way in which musicians imagine\, develop and build new technical and expressive means. \n\nThursday 25 August 2022 7pm; MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon;  Duration: 1 hour 30 mins (incl. interval) \n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)\n\n

SUMMARY:Ensemble 642 – The Art of Melancholy
DESCRIPTION:An exploration of human emotion with compassion and humour.\nAbout the artists\nEnsemble 642 are leaders of the next generation of Antipodean musicians dedicated to early music and historically informed performance practice. Acclaimed for their spellbinding performances\, they bring the emotion and spirit of the Baroque to life. \nAbout the concert\nProgram\nHenry Purcell O solitude\, my sweetest choice \nWilliam Byrd Pavana ‘The Earl of Salisbury’ \nHenry Purcell Cease\, anxious world\, Z.362 \nHenry Lawes I’m sick of love (To the Sycamore) \nJohn Banister Give me my lute \nWilliam Byrd The Bells \nJohn Dowland In darkness let me dwell; Preludium in G minor; Sorrow\, sorrow\, stay \nWilliam Lawes Harp Consort No.8 in G ‘Pavan’ \nNicholas Lanier The Dying Lover \nHenry Purcell Oedipus\, Z.583: Musick for a While \nOn plucked string instruments\, the bond between music and musician is as intricate as that of a singer and their vocal cords. With hands touching the strings\, the stakes are high to hit each note with precision\, and the rewards of everything going to plan are heard in intimate detail. \nThe expression of melancholy has a distinctive and intoxicating voice in the music of Baroque England. Whether provoked by the pains of a love lost or welcomed in the pursuit of contemplation\, it inspired some of the most intimate and affecting music from composers such as Henry Purcell\, Henry Lawes\, and John Dowland. \nThe confessional genre of English lute song provided the perfect mode to explore this emotion with compassion and humour. The interiority of this music speaks to us today as more than ever we search for space and stillness in a restless\, over-stimulated world. \nInternationally acclaimed\, ARIA-nominated baritone David Greco joins the enchanting plucked strings of Ensemble 642 in this program exploring the unique pleasures of melancholy in English music from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. \n\nWednesday 20 July 2022 6pm; MRC Primrose Potter salon \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\nTICKETS Standard $50 ($40 Concession)

SUMMARY:Quercus Trio: Hall of Mirrors
DESCRIPTION:Australian composers who cross continents.\nAbout the artists\nQuercus is a new Melbourne-based horn trio\, showcasing the distinctive combination of horn\, violin and piano. Interested in championing contemporary and Australian works\, their diverse and dynamic experience melds to create something truly special. \nAbout the concert\nTheir performance in Primrose Potter Salon shifts focus to Australian composers who cross continents\, with strong roots both here and abroad. Beginning with a piece from Melbournian Don Banks written for the 1962 Edinburgh Festival\, the jazz-influenced\, loosely serialist horn-trio captures light moods. \nRoger Smalley’s Horn Trio is a little-known gem of the literature. A masterful rendering of the myriad colours and emotional possibilities wrought from these instrumental forces. \nLarry Sitsky’s Horn Trio Barerq takes material from the slow movement of his second violin concerto – influenced by the Greek-Amernian philosopher Gurdjieff and part of Sitsky’s ‘Armenian phase’ – and reworks it for horn trio to mesmerising effect. \nProgram \nDon Banks Trio for horn\, violin and piano \nLarry Sitsky Barerq \nRoger Smalley Trio for horn\, violin and piano \n\nWednesday 22 June 2022 6pm\, Melbourne Recital Centre\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\nStandard $25 ($20 Concession)

Accademia Arcadia explores Baroque and early-classical chamber music\, traversing trio-sonata\, cantata\, early opera and grand liturgical genres. \nAbout the concert\nIn 1741 Rameau published five chamber works for harpsichord\, violin and viola da gamba. To each work he gave the title ‘concert’\, the French equivalent of the Italian ‘concerto’. Enchanting the ear with endless variety and novelty\, the works are harpsichord concertos whose orchestral component has been reduced to an absolute minimum of one treble instrument and one bass instrument. \nA celebration of people\, characters\, places and popular dance\, their performance featuring a mid-18th-century French harpsichord made by William Dowd of Boston in 1976 will captivate and transcend. \n\nThursday 21 April 2022 6pm \n\nPrimrose Potter Salon\n\nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\nStandard $37 ($30 Concession)

SUMMARY:Firebird Trio: Entanglements
DESCRIPTION:Program\nJohannes Brahms\nScherzo in C minor from the F-A-E Sonata \nClara Schumann\n3 Romances \nRobert Schumann\nAdagio and Allegro\nPiano Trio No.2 in F \nAbout the artists\nFirebird Trio has performed nationwide to critical acclaim\, with a vibrancy of imagination that echoes its name\, bringing energy\, colour and splendour to their live experiences. This performance will see the trio celebrate the musical entanglement of the Schumanns with Johannes Brahms in a specially curated concert of duos and piano trios. \nAbout the concert\nOpening with the spirited Scherzo from the F-A-E Sonata\, based on a musical cryptogram of the motto ‘Frei aber einsam’ or ‘Free but lonely’\, the movement reveals a young composer already at the height of his craft. Moving into Clara Schumann’s Three Romances\, composed for the violin virtuoso\, Joseph Joachim with whom Clara had a wildly successful musical partnership. \nRobert Schumann’s self-styled characters of Florestan and Eusebius are brought to the fore in his Adagio and Allegro for cello and piano – swinging from introversion and tenderness one moment to passionate extroversion the next and finishing with the F major\, a work of idyllic generosity and collegiality.

SUMMARY:SCHUBERT: GRAND DUO
DESCRIPTION:KIAZMA Piano Duo brings together the talents of pianists Tomoe Kawabata and Aura Go. \nEqually at home in twopiano and four-hand repertoire from the Baroque to the present day\, KIAZMA shares the unique combination of intimacy\, intricacy and dynamism that each genre has to offer. \nAtop the summit of Schubert’s unparalleled achievements in the four-hand repertoire sits the remarkable Sonata in C ‘Grand Duo’ of 1824. KIAZMA Piano Duo gives audiences a rare opportunity to experience this epic work\, one of the most glorious and significant neglected works by a major composer\, in concert. The sublime Variations in A-flat on an Original Theme was composed in the same year\, and\, together with the Grand Duo\, mark Schubert’s rediscovery of a sense of “happiness and peace”.

They will be joined by and international cast of four superb soloists: the Australian soprano Merlyn Quaife AM\, British contralto Emily Bauer-Jones\, the Filipino-Australian tenor Michael Lapiñaand German baritone Markus Matheis. \nOther performances include The Australian Children’s Choir\, Corpus Medicorum\, Melbourne Chamber Orchestra\, Stefan Cassomenos\, Calvin Bowman\, Wilma Smith\, Sutherland Trio and 2018 Yehudi Menuhin International Competition winner Christian Li. Making their Marathon debuts are the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) and Orava Quartet. \n  \nABOUT DVOŘÁK’S STABAT MATER\nStabat Mater Op. 58\, for soli\, choir and orchestra by the Czech composer Antonín Dvořák must surely rank as one of the finest and most most emotionally–charged choral works of the 19th century. \nThe work was sketched in 1876 and completed in 1877\, composed as Dvořák’s reaction to the tragic death of his daughter\, Josefa. The sketch was dedicated to František Hušpauer “as a souvenir to the friend of his young days.” However\, Dvořák was forced to postpone the orchestration of the work due to his other personal and professional obligations. He returned to the final stylisation of the work in 1877\, when\, almost unbelievably\, his two surviving children died within a short time of each other. \nThe definitive version of the score was written between the beginning of October and 13 November 1877 in Prague\, and contains some of the most heart-achingly beautiful music of Dvořák’s entire musical output. It is a melodically beautiful and deeply affecting piece\, which uses the superb vocal\, choral and orchestral writing to convey the dramatic and humanistic verses of the Stabat Mater with a great sense of gravitas and profundity. The Stabat Mater is a famous 13th-century Christian hymn to Mary\, which portrays her suffering as Jesus Christ’s mother during his crucifixion. Given the circumstances of this composition\, it is little wonder that Dvořák’s setting is considered one of the finest examples of any composer’s setting of these tragic and powerful words.\nThe Stabat Mater was Dvořák’s very first work on a religious theme. It is divided into ten individual parts; only the first and the last part are thematically connected. The first performance took place on 23 December 1880 at the concert of the Association of Musical Artists in Prague. The performers included the operatic ensemble of the Czech Provisional Theatre\, under the conductor Adolf Čech. The composer Leoš Janáček conducted the work a year and half later\, on 2 April 1882\, in Brno. Performances abroad (Budapest\, London) soon ensued and the work quickly established itself as a true masterpiece. \nDon’t miss this chance to hear this magnificent work performed by one of Melbourne’s finest choirs\, and four superb Australian soloists\, under the baton of Andrew Wailes. \nThe Australian premiere of Antonín Dvořák’s Stabat Mater\, Op.58 was given by The Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra  on 29 September 1885 at the Melbourne Town Hall\, conducted by David Lee.  \n  \nSingle Tickets\nPremium $75\nStandard $34 ($25 Concession)\nFamily $70 \nA Transaction Fee between $5.50 and $8 applies to orders made online and by phone. SUMMARY:Contrasting works by Jenkins and Puccini
DESCRIPTION:Heidelberg Choral Society and Orchestra are proud to present the Australian Premiere performance of Karl Jenkins’ major new work\, Symphonic Adiemus. This iconic work for choir and unusual percussions will be contrasted with the popular Messa di Gloria of Giacomo Puccini. \nSince it was first heard in 1994\, Karl Jenkins’s work has captured the imaginations of music-lovers worldwide thanks to its unique combination of classical principles with the flavors of the world and ethnic music. The first release in the series\, Adiemus: Songs of Sanctuary\, has sold over 1.5 million albums worldwide \nSymphonic Adiemus\, which received its first UK performance in London in late 2017\, is a challenging and innovative work\, drawing on and extending earlier works. Through his use of invented language\, unusual rhythms and extensive and rarely-heard percussion Jenkins pushes the boundaries of new music development. \nUnashamedly operatic\, the young Puccini’s Messa di Gloria reflects the influence of Puccini’s hero\, Verdi\, and provides a foretaste of his later major works. The joyous themes which run throughout the work complement the exuberant nature of Jenkin’s work\, and provide an orchestral contrast which will make this a concert not to be missed. \nSoloists Nathan Lay (baritone) and Timothy Reynold (tenor) also feature in the program. \n

SUMMARY:Big bread\, big boots – Music of the Hungarian plains
DESCRIPTION:Vardos have been serenading audiences around the world since late last century\, driven by wild violin\, accordion and double bass\, their gypsy-folk and Romany styled song is a rare treat in contemporary concert halls. Their travels have taken them throughout a swathe of Australian music festivals and internationally through New Zealand\, New Caledonia\, Switzerland\, Hungary and the United States. \nTwo-metre high loaves of bread and laments of boots without boot stiffener\, sorrow over homelands and missing lovers: the Hungarians use to music to express all the highs and lows of life. Haunting laments\, pentatonic peasant songs and virtuosic and crazily fast dance pieces capture the essence of Hungary.

SUMMARY:RESONANCES: Music from Japan
DESCRIPTION:Pianists Tomoe Kawabata and Aura Go share an electric musical connection that speaks directly to audiences. Described as ‘positively ecstatic’\, ‘masterful’ and ‘profoundly moving’\, the pair delights in sharing the unique combination of intimacy and dynamism of the piano duo. Their innovative and thoughtful programming explores seldom-performed works and new music alongside much-loved staples of the repertoire. Their 2017 Melbourne Recital Centre series celebrates three favourite aspects of the genre in three distinct and compelling programs: unique resonances\, evocative and colourful sonic landscapes\, and infectious energy. \nResonances: Music from Japan is a rare opportunity to hear spellbinding works for one and two pianos by several of Japan’s foremost composers. This concert reveals the unique resonances created by blending two pianos into one sonic entity\, while also tracing the lineage of Japan’s French school of composition\, fathered by Tomojiro Ikenouchi and pushed into bold new directions by his students Akira Miyoshi\, Akio Yashiro and Shin-ichiro Ikebe. Several of the works on the program were recorded for the first time by the Kawabata-Go Piano Duo on their CD\, Five Rocks in a Japanese Garden\, and receive their first Australian performance in this concert. \nPROGRAM: \nTomojiro Ikenouchi\nEn Bis pour piano à 4 mains \nAkio Yashiro\nSonata for piano \nAkira Miyoshi\nPhénomène sonore I pour deux pianos \nPhénomène sonore II pour deux pianos \nHenri Dutilleux\nFigures de resonances\, for two pianos \nShin-ichiro Ikebe\nA couple of butterflies through…

SUMMARY:Wagner in Paris
DESCRIPTION:A little about the show… \nBased in fact but liberally sprinkled with supposition and rumour\, this captivating story of Wagner’s impoverished time in Paris with his first wife\, Minna\, is told through letters\, prose and song. Melbourne based ensemble\, The Parlour\, will take audiences on an entertaining and moving journey\, guided by the words of Minna Wagner’s illegitimate daughter\, Natalie Planer\, the most enduring but least written about woman in the life of Richard Wagner. \nNot merely a song recital\, Wagner is Paris is imagined as the first encounter between Natalie Planer and Wagner’s aspiring biographer\, Mrs. Burrell. It features a number of Wagner’s rarely heard French Art Songs along with those of his friends\, rivals and contemporaries. Soprano Wendy Grose performs Wagner’s epic Adieux de Marie Stuart which contrasts with his intimate Trois Melodies to be sung by mezzo soprano Karen Van Spall. Baritone Adam Miller performs a number of Wagner’s pieces for male voice all accompanied by pianist Eidit Golder. Natalie Planer’s narrative is brought to life by talented actors Julie Houghton\, Eva Torkkola and Alice Tovey. Through all this\, the audience gains an insight into this tempestuous\, but little spoken about period in the composer’s life.\nEvent Details:\nThursday 3rd November\, 6pm\nSalon\, Melbourne Recital Centre (Crn Southbank Blvd & Sturt St. Southbank)\nTickets – $39 / $29 Concession\nBookings – melbournerecital.com.au or 9699 3333 \nPresented by The Parlour and Melbourne Recital Centre
